Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been in the works for good while now. In fact, it is possible that it may have been in development for so long that Sakurai might have teased the game in Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. In this game, there is a co-op event called “The Ultimate Battle”. The description reads “they’re all here! Every single fighter! If this battle’s not ‘ultimate’, then what is”? Of course, as Source Gaming pointed out in the tweet linked down below, it could be nothing more than a coincidence or an unintentional pun. Whatever the reason, all that can be done for the time being is to wait for an official explanation.
In Japanese the event is called, "究極決戦" which translates to "The Ultimate Battle" in English.
Since Smash Bros. Ultimate is called Smash Bros. Special in Japanese, it might be an unintentional pun.

That’s being committed to a name… Holy crap
I’m sure it was called the Special Battle in the japanese version
I’m sure you didn’t read all of the content.
You would be wrong then.
Are you sure about that? Because the tweet provided says that the Japanese event IS called “The Ultimate Battle”.
This is most likely where they’ve got the title for this next instalment
I think this is just a mistake that Sakurai mention whatsoever.
Probably just a coinkydink .
But a cool one!
Hmmm… Maybe he was inspired?
If ULTIMATE wasn’t in quotes I would think it’s just a coincidence.
But “ULTIMATE” is in quotes, leading me to believe it was intentional.
Why would they put it in quotes if they were just making a plain statement?
