This weekend, players from four regions across North America are competing in the first wave of online finals for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate North America Open 2019 tournament. And you can watch it all happen live! Livestreaming starts approximately between 9 a.m. PT and 12 p.m. PT on Saturday, Feb. 9, for all regions, and can be viewed by visiting either https://www.twitch.tv/Nintendo or https://www.youtube.com/Nintendo.
Out of more than 30,000 total registered players, 8,000 competed in the online qualifiers last weekend, and now 16 players are moving on to compete in the first online final event this Saturday. Fans of the Super Smash Bros.fighting scene might recognize such players as Narcissa, who was a runner-up at the Nintendo World Championships in 2015, competing in this weekend’s finals. Professional Super Smash Bros. player ESAM will also be a special guest on the livestream, joining VikkiKitty, Toph and Jordan Kent – commentators well known in the Super Smash Bros. community.
The winners of the Online Event 1 final will join the winners of the second and third online event finals on March 2 and March 16 to compete for bragging rights in the ultimate final event at the PAX East video game conference in Boston on March 30. But Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is not the only big tournament this weekend! On Sunday, Feb. 10, at 9 a.m. PT, teams of four will also compete in the online qualifiers for the Splatoon 2 North America Inkling Open 2019. Out of more than 400 registered teams, only eight teams will advance to the online qualifier finals on March 2. From there, the top four teams will compete at PAX East in Boston.

Wait, could a character be revealed?
I’d wager not. While it’s WAY more likely than revealing a character at some random convention (like people have, for some reason, speculated in the past) I don’t know, doesn’t feel like it’d be the place to drop one. Just my hunch though.
I just hope that Ultimate’s competitive character and general gameplay progress as tiers solidify, tech evolves, and balance DLC and updates are added by Nintendo. Anyway, competitive smash is crazy and entertaining. The best of luck to the participants!
