Rumor: Game Informer’s Imran Khan Says That Nintendo Is Reviving A Cancelled Game

Game Informer senior editor Imran Khan shared an interesting tidbit of information in a Kinda Funny podcast a few days ago. Khan said that “there’s a game that’s thought to be dead that Nintendo‘s reviving, and it is not one that people would expect. It was very much a title that was dead and buried, very officially cancelled. I’ve heard enough about this game that he’s almost sure that it exists again”. However, he’s waiting for more sources to officially confirm it before he will write up a piece for Game Informer, so it is still considered a rumor for now. The Kinda Funny podcast episode that Khan appears in is down below.

    1. Hmmm. What are the odds that Game Informer’s Imran Khan could be talking about Metroid Prime 4. I mean, it was cancelled with Bandai Namco and they’re maybe planning to continue where they left but now with Retro Studio.

  1. Finally, they’re giving us Mario 128 and releasing it on the Gamecube, like it was meant to be. Very bold move from Nintendo.

    1. Could be Cry On witch was being developed as an exclusive for nintendo by Mistwalker, maybe Nintendo decided to fund that game.

          1. Yes, and certain games were intended to be made for that extension but either had to be made as an original cartridge or never saw the light of day. Banjo Tooie and Majora’s Mask were originally N64 DD games while Mario 64 2 only saw the light of day as a playable demo if memory serves right.

    1. If Scalebound is a Nintendo Switch exclusive… BOOM! That news would be as huge as Astral Chain and Bayonetta 3 (both exclusives from Nintendo and Platinum Games)!

  2. Nintendo and Platinum are working well together. First they save Bayonetta, and now they revive Scalebound! You heard it here first!!

  3. Mega Man legends 3 would be cool to see come back on switch. Maverick hunter would be way cooler but way more unlikely than mml3. Personally, I doubt it’s a first party game.

  4. Only games that come to mind:

    Mega Man Legends 3
    Silent Hills
    Scalebound
    Star Wars 1313

I could see Scalebound being a possibility. It was originally started as a Wii game if I remember correctly. Now it’d come full circle. Although I would personally hope for Legends 3 (assuming any of this is even accurate).

  5. Earthbound 64. I know, that became Mother 3 on the GBA. But doesn’t mean they can’t go back to the drawing board and redo the whole thing. I’d love to have a modern 3D Earthbound RPG on Switch. But I’m aware that I’m just dreaming. I remember being SO ticked off and disappointed back in the day when Earthbound 64 was cancelled.

  6. Hey what about you make a new game instead? That being said I would LOVE to see Mario 128 revived. I was waiting near 8 years. But that’s not really dead and buried. I wonder if this is true and what could it be?

  7. My guesses:

    1) Star Fox Arcade I don’t really know if this game is considered cancelled but during the development of that ugly Star Fox Assault game Nintendo showed a teaser art of this game:

    http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/starfox/images/0/0b/Triforce_starfox.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20080206155932

I don’t give so much hope for this since Nintendo has released Star Fox Zero as a re-imagination of the story and also the release of Star Fox 2 on SNES classic makes me think that Nintendo has already revived a Star Fox game.

    2) Super Mario 128: This was one of first projects for the GameCube but never came to light

    3) F-Zero: I don’t remember well if there was a rumour about an F-Zero game for the Wii that got cancelled because it wasn’t very much innovative. This one I’m not 100% sure.

    4) Banjo-Threeie: I know already that this isn’t entirely a Nintendo project but just think at E3 this game getting announced with Banjo and Kazooie as a DLC fighter for Smash Ultimate

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e2k7IL6VTQA

    5) Donkey Kong Racing: Another non-Nintendo project but this one was considered the sequel to Diddy Kong racing until that F&%”$1g microsoft come in did that brain washing to Rare

  8. It could be Scalebound…. Platinum did say they had a lot of games for this year and now that they’ve pulled out of Granblue, I’m pretty sure that’s not one of them…

Also, with Bayonetta 3 and Astral Chain coming to Switch, it could very well mean that Nintendo are helping platinum revive Scalebound (with the help of Monolith), or they could be bringing Vanquish 2.

  9. This reminds me of a fortune teller. Just saying vague things that everyone wants to hear, and when something like it happens, he will say “it was that I was talking about!”

  10. I’m going to cling to my Scalebound naivety and roll with Mega Man Legends 3. At the very least, the prologue of that game was finished and then Capcom pulled the plug.

If it does get revived with Nintendo partnering in its development, it will be a truly historic day in gaming. So many people were crushed when they took down the “dev room.”

      1. **Shut down rather, coinciding with the cancellation of the game. It is still there, yes, just not functioning as a window into the game’s development.

Either way, I have never heard of Scalebound, so I can’t understand any excitement around it. Does it have a huge fanbase that would be “surprised” by it being revived?

I can’t think of a fan base that’d be more surprised than the MML3 fanbase. We’ve been shit on so much between Capcom and Inafune himself. It’s not even cautious optimism at this point, just pure dejection attached to a glimmer of hope.

  15. “It was very much a title that was dead and buried, very officially cancelled.”
this rules out a lot of speculation, it’s a game that is coming back from a really dire, desperate cancellation.
it also implies that it’s something well known to the public, so it couldn’t be something like project hammer, which was only an internal project ( even not, not that many people know it )

    it’s probably:

    1- Mother 64

    2- Megaman Legends 3

    possibly

    3- scalebound

4- metroid dread ( internal, so probably not )

    1. I’m especially tense about this announcement because just last week I wrote to itoi about reviving mother 64 to finish it in its original form
