It has been revealed that it was ArtePiazza who were tasked with creating and developing the retro-themed 2D mode in the newly released Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition. The team have previously worked on a number of Dragon Quest related titles including Dragon Quest Rivals, Opoona, and the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS versions of Dragon Quests IV-VII.

Well I’ve just only started the playthrough but from what I’ve seen of the 2D mode it looks like an impressive recreation of Erdrea with an eye for detail in the sprite work.
Shame the enemy sprites don’t move in battle like in other DQ titles but it still is an impressive feat… Still replaying the bulk of this game in 3D however, the characters really shine in cutscenes.
I am playing in 2D mode on Switch and am loving it! My only complaint is that the pre-rendered 3D cutscenes from the 3D mode don’t play during the important parts of the game, although the opening cutscene does play (though without character voices).
