Nintendo is constantly experimenting with hardware. If they are not coming up with wacky things for their consoles, the company is experimenting with accessories and peripherals. I remember Project Cafe and one of it’s launch titles, Acid Ghost.
Pretty sure that heart sensor thing ended up in the Joy-Cons and is being used in Ring Fit Adventure. Whenever I play and beat a level, it offers to check my heart rate.
