News has recently emerged from The Pokemon Company that the Pokemon Global Link service will be closing on the 25th of February next year. The Pokemon Global Link service has been operating for over nine years and servicing such games as Pokemon Sun & Moon. This move means that players of those games and others won’t be able to use Rating Battles, QR Rental Teams, Online Competitions, and Friendly Competitions. However, Pokemon online functionality outside of the Global Link will still be available, so you can still trade away. Here’s the statement made on the Pokemon Global Link news site:
After more than nine years of operation, the Pokémon Global Link (PGL) service will be retired on February 24, 2020, at 23:59 UTC. After PGL service has ended, you will no longer be able to use any gameplay features that require a connection to the PGL on your Pokémon Ultra Sun, Pokémon Ultra Moon, Pokémon Sun, or Pokémon Moon games. You will still be able to use other online functionality apart from the PGL.
Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield will provide services similar to the PGL’s Rating Battles and Online Competitions features and will be available to play via Nintendo Switch.
Thank you for using the PGL, and we hope you will continue to enjoy using the PGL until the service ends.
Well, We have some good times with Global Link in Pokemon X and Y and Sun and Moon. I’m still gonna miss this feature. I really enjoy it a lot. :-(
But the 3DS is still a thriving system, remember? The 3DS is supposed to be the gateway to the Switch, remember? It has no successor according to Nintendo, remember? The Switch is a home console that you can take with you that only replaces Wii U, remember? None of these statements are proving to be true given the actions by these companies.
They said the same thing about the DS not replacing the Game Boy. Pay it no mind. Neither Nintendo nor any other company wants to spend cash competing against themselves.
