The annual EVO fighting tournament is taking place next month in Las Vegas but the organisers have announced today that the Super Smash Bros franchise won’t be a part of the tournament. The company behind EVO said in a tweet that they are “saddened that Nintendo has chosen not to continue that legacy with us this year. In the future, we hope to once again celebrate the Super Smash Bros community alongside them”. You can watch the EVO tournament online via the usual channels such as YouTube and Twitch and the event kicks off Tuesday, 8th March at 5pm PT.

What gives? The game is finally complete. If anything, being present in tourneys will sustain the game and make it relevant for 2 – 3 years to come.
Nintendo is doing official tourneys in 2022 through some other company so maybe it’s a contract deal.
Either way, Nintendo isn’t done with Smash Bros. They just aren’t doing Evo
Must be something about the controversial smash community. EVO is the biggest fighting games tourney there is. Missed opportunity but oh well
Nintendo is partnering with Panda Global. I HIGHLY doubt Panda doesn’t want smash to be at other events. It’s all but guaranteed to be Nintendo’s doing.
SONY owns EVO now, so this was a given. Plus Nintendo has their own smash tourneys, so no loses really.
“We are saddened that Nintendo has chosen not to continue that legacy with us this year.” Pretty plainly stated that it was Nintendo’s doing. I’m still not holding my breath for Nintendo’s official circuit to be any good. Will have to wait and see what the actual details are.
I’m not saying it wasn’t Nintendo’s doing. They’ve been trying to get Smash off of Evo for a long time now. SONY owning Evo, is them finally ripping off that bandage, this is Nintendo doing it with actual reason behind it.
Nintendo being Nintendo as usual.
