Headcannon previously tweeted that they were “proud to announce that we have been working with SEGA to re-create Sonic 3 & Knuckles for their upcoming Sonic Origins collection!.” However, in a series on tweets published yesterday, the company said that the Sonic Origins compilation is “purely a SEGA-developed product” and that the company didn’t work on the actual collection. However, Headcannon are renowned for developing the Retro Engine version of Sonic 3 and Knuckles. In a series of tweets on Twitter, Headcannon explained they were “contracted to build a Retro Engine version of S3&K as a separate project from Sega’s Sonic Origins.” So while it’s slightly confusing, it seems as though SEGA’s internal development teams took over the Retro Engine and tweaked it to their satisfaction, while Headcannon clearly played an integral part in its creation.

2D remakes are weird cuz you can just plug the originals in and play them and get a better experience with the perfect pixel-art and bit audio, but so many people don’t have the hardware (console and sdtv) that the best alternative is to remake the entire thing and make it look not quite as good but more modern and change the music up so its not as good but more modern so you get an interesting new take on it but its not like the originals got worse over time, people just don’t have the equipment to play them anymore.
