Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins won’t include all the original songs

Sadly what we all thought would happen has happened and Sonic 3 & Knuckles in Sonic Origins won’t include all the original soundtrack and this is presumably due to the fact that some of the soundtrack was composed by a certain Micheal Jackson, which is where it all gets very messy. What will happen instead according to Sonic social media manager, Katie Chrzanowski, is that long-time Sonic soundtrack composer Jun Senoue is working hard to recreate the music to be as faithful as it can be to the originals as possible. Sonic Origins will be available on multiple platforms on 23rd June.

“While unfortunately we can’t use all the original sounds from the Sega Genesis version of the game, Jun Senoue has been working really hard to adapt the original music that was composed in 1993 for Sonic Origins.”

“He’s been going so far as reproducing it, with the same sound chip from the Sega Genesis, and using his own digital audio tape collection to make this as faithful to the originals as possible.”

  1. I’m glad that Katie gave us an answer concerning the S3&K situation, it’s been a while that the Sonic community has been questioning this for quite sometime now. I hope most people will have the same mindeset as others do.

I don’t mind the Buxer/MJ tracks being gone from the game or whatever, but the proto tracks also were great. So whatever Jun Senoue does, I will believe in it, it will keep the game as fresh as possible and stay true to the game soundtrack.

    1. Im fine with this actually because i can just go back and play my original copy for the old music and im interested to hear official genesis versions of the pc version tracks.

  2. I figured that would be the case. Looking forward to hearing the new stuff though!

This also has me thinking of the Genesis Mini 2, specifically the possibility of S3&K with these new songs included.

  3. The whole Michael Jackson controversy is probably why Sonic 3 & Knuckles never got released/ported to any platform since Wii VC. The new arrangements are likely gonna be in future ports of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, including a possible port to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pass. There might be a fan made patch that will inject the new arrangements into a Sonic 3 & Knuckles rom, just like there’s likely gonna be fan made patches for the Steam version of Origins that puts the original music back in.

What we need to remember is that copyrights to songs expire and thus can longer be used without reaching a new agreement. This is why video game publishers replace music when releasing games. A prime example of this is “I am the Wind” not playing in the credits of Castlevania Symphony of the Night except on the original PS1 or Saturn disc.

Although the problem with Sonic 3 & Knuckles isn’t necessarily so much about copyrights to the music but rather about Michael Jackson himself.

  4. I’m not too upset about that. The prototype tracks (er, at least the fan restored versions) are pretty great, and it sounds like Jun Senoue is basically doing the same sort of thing. Also, replacing the music now will mean Sega doesn’t have to worry about its dicey licensing anymore in the future, so I’m sure it’s enticing for them as well.

  5. Kinda expected this but probably still not getting it anytime soon since i already own all these games on Steam.

  6. One: the dev team didn’t own the audience an answer about anything.

Two: this is great. Michael Jackson was a child milestone pedophile and society is better off now that he’s a decaying in the ground.
