Reggie still isn’t sold on Virtual Reality

former nintendo of America president reggie fils-aime

Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has spoken to CNET about a range of things including the Metaverse, Augemented Reality and Virtual Reality. Reggie says that he is genuinely excited by the prospect of the Metaverse and is interested to see how it all pans out. He said that he believes that Augmented Reality will be a real selling point and says that he has seen “great” Augmented Reality projects and is a big advocate of it. However, he appears less impressed by Virtual Reality and says that he has yet to see a wonderful Virtual Reality experience which he has felt is truly compelling. This news comes as previews for Sony’s PlayStation VR2 have arrived.

“As I think of the metaverse, there are early examples of it. Whether you look at Roblox, whether you look at the work that Fortnite and Epic Games are doing, it’s going to continue to become more and more immersive. I do believe it’s going to be gaming-led, I don’t believe that it has to have an element of VR. I actually believe that augmented reality is going to progress much further and much faster. I’m a much bigger proponent, in part because I’ve seen great AR experiences brought to the consumer. I haven’t yet seen that wonderful VR experience that I find compelling.”

  1. As I found myself led on my living room floor, hiding behind an imaginary half-wall waiting to peek and shoot the weird red dudes in Superhot, that’s when I had to accept that VR could be extremely compelling. I don’t see me ever doing the majority of my gaming in VR, but it’s definitely an avenue for unique and great experiences and I’m sure there’s plenty of untapped potential and development in the technology yet to come. While there’s been some novel AR stuff, it doesn’t really come close to VR for me. So it’s a firm disagree from me Reggie.

  2. As one who’s had VR for the past 7 years, I’m still impressed with the technology itself. I suppose the one area that’s not as impressive is the lack of media, content, and games. Despite the rapid growth of VR in the past decade, it still lacks quality content. Sure you can point to things like Half Life Alyx, Beat Saber, and Boneworks, but beyond that the list is fairly short. Sony’s interest in VR for their Playstation line of consoles is helping to push more projects forward, but it’ll be a number of years before a library will be impressive enough for the average gaming consumer to want to invest in a headset.

    1. He probably hasn’t played much VR. Theres plenty of great experiences. I don’t think Reggie games much despite what his videos may have you believe, he’s just a suit at the end of the day.

    1. I’m not saying vr is bad and that it shouldn’t become the norm for gaming, but I never hear people talk about how does it help with disabled people and stuff like that someone in a wheel chair can play on their console a with controller or use a keyboard to access the game I even seen how some have dealt with motion controls as well but vr not much honestly as it requires lots of movements, just some food for thought tbh.

  3. I agree that most VR games are simplistic, overpriced, or incomplete — it’s gonna take big risks and huge investments to make AAAs worthy of what VR can do, and very few publishers feel they can afford it with a relatively small install base.

That said, if anyone doubts the potential of VR, try heavily-modded Skyrim VR (most importantly VRIK, HIGGS, PLANCK, ENB, DyndoLOD, an HD texture pack). Skyrim VR’s modding scene is one of the biggest test beds for the future of large-scale VR experiences, and what they’re achieving out there is incredible.

    1. People still go to him for his opinion, as well as continue to ask about Mother 3, as troll-y as that is. I’ve never been a fan of the guy though, but I’d rather see him return than keep Bowser around at this point…

    2. @Gruntilda,
Yeah, he retired. But for some reason he still talks about video games from time to time. I always think of him as a Nintendo betrayer. Leaving so unexpectedly from a company where nearly everyone loved him. I’ve always wondered what his REAL reason for retiring was?

  4. To be honest, neither am I. I don’t really see the great appeal of wearing oversized googles to play mostly the same kind of game over and over. It looks more like an anime trend that people are trying too hard to pass up as the new thing, not helped by stuff like SAO, Overlord and all that.

  5. For me, Virtual Reality (all that I’ve seen) represents everything I hate about video games. FIRST PERSON GAMES. It’s almost like it’s own personal console. One that I know I’ll NEVER buy. I can feel myself getting motion sick just thinking about first-person video games. How can hardly nobody else get motion sick playing first person games the way I do? Is that a part of astigmatism (which I have)?

Does anyone else reading this have astigmatism, but not get motion sick when playing a first-person video game? I’ve always believed there could be a connection.
