Every week, Physical games tracker GfK Entertainment provides some physical sales data from the UK. However, UK game sales are not limited to just them. Every month there is a monthly report on digital and physical software sales from GSD. Simultaneously, there is also sales data on hardware and even accessories.
Well, the latest monthly charts has arrived. May 2023 was nothing but good news for Nintendo, as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom dominated the month. It’s the biggest Zelda game launch in UK history, so much so that its release caused software sales to be up 30% overall compared to the same time period last year.
As for hardware, the Nintendo Switch was the #1 console once again. Prior to May, the PlayStation 5 had been #1 for 4 straight months. In general, console sales were down 10% compared to May 2022, and 14% down on April. The Nintendo Switch was actually down 5% in sale month-on-month, but because of the launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the console saw sales up 28% compared to May 2022. 35% of Switch sales in May were The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch model.
The launch of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom even benefited sales of accessories. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller rose up to #2 in accessory sales for the month. The PlayStation 5 DualSense controller is at #1. As for the Zelda edition of the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller, which launched with the game, it was the highest charting new accessory for the month, at #20.
