SEGA has announced today that their acquisition of mobile video game marker Rovio has been successful. The Finnish developer is best known for its ultra-successful Angry Birds series of games which initially took the world by storm due to its simplistic and addictive gameplay. Rovio currently has studios in Espoo, Stockholm, Copenhagen and Montreal.

  1. No surprise here. I never did like Angry Birds. What’s new is now there’s a chance that Red or whatever his name is will be yet another Sega-not-Sega rep that isn’t Akira Yuki in Smash. Now I know I talk a lot about Super Smash Bros, but let’s be honest, that’s what we’re all thinking about.

    1. My current opinion is that the next Smash Bros. should focus on having only 1st party characters, though I’m open to having a couple characters from SEGA’s Sonic franchise.

      1. My current opinion is the opposite. I’m open to 3rd party characters, but I don’t want any more Sonic newcomers unless we get a Mega Man newcomer for each one.

      2. Same. Smash has strayed too far from its Nintendo celebration roots and 3rd party instead of reflecting that history has become more of a hype train and subtle marketing blitz situation. I rather see a return to a focus on ips not yet represented, old characters, obscure and side characters. 3rd party has been milked by this point unless they do a TRUE ovetall celebration of gaming with only a few key Nintendo icons and everyone else 3rd party, instead of 80% Nintendo and 20% 3rd party and claiming it a celebration of gaming.

        1. @Kootz Eh, I’m gonna have to disagree with you. I would love more Nintendo characters, but there are still plenty of deserving third party characters. The problem isn’t that there are too many characters and not enough deserving characters. Smash should have fighters that are reflections of gamming history and have chemistry with other fighters. Not meme characters put in to get money from as many demographics as possible like Steve.

      1. Not in Smash bros, right? Eggman barely makes it in my top 10 most important Sonic characters. You just want him for the memes. And don’t tell me he should join because “only characters who appeared in the first game should be the second to represent their franchise”. That rule does not exist and you know. As for which Sonic character I want to join Smash next? I would rather never have another Sonic rep in Smash ever again. It’s bad enough Sonic is the only third party fighter that gets to be in every Smash bros with a third party fighter and had his own crossover series with Mario. Can’t we have just one Smash bros with Mega Man and not Sonic?

  2. Rovio is like, ok this angry birds thing has been played out for 8 years now, we managed to still cash out with a movie but thats been a few years already, I think its over guys.
    Then,
SEGA:” we want to purchase your company…..”
