Switch emulator Suyu steps up to take Yuzu’s place

Nintendo switch (oled model)

There’s soon to be a new Nintendo Switch emulator on the block in the form of Suyu which is based on Yuzu’s open source code and aims to deliver a similar experience for emulation enthusiasts. Suyu which is pronounced “‘sue-you” is not ready for use just yet, but the team is assembling and has a GitLab page. The Suyu team is confident it won’t be taken down as Suyu has consulted “someone with legal experience” and the project “currently exists in a legal gray area we are trying to work our way out of.” The project won’t include monetisation and also doesn’t provide step by step guides, which Yuzu previously did before it was shut down by Nintendo. It will certainly be interesting to see how Suyu fares in the future.

    1. Emulation =/= piracy.

A pirate can use emulation, but a pirate can also just as easily use a hacked Switch.

Personally, I used Yuzu to check the framerate stability of my own copies of Splatoon 2 and Tears of the Kingdom. Note how I used the emulator while never resorting to piracy in any way.

(Both games ran poorly/subpar for what I wanted on my PC, so I didn’t even wind up playing them on the emulator anyway)

      1. Uh, that’s not true, the emulation in this case is totally illegal since it violates copyright and Nintendo has never given its consent. And what is this site that glorifies piracy?

        1. Except copyright doesn’t apply here. Because emulators are software that do just that, emulate. Plus countless times have courts ruled that emulators are not illegal for that exact reason. The only reason an emulator would be considered illegal, is when the actual BIOS is distributed along the emulator. Which is rarely the case.

Actually Nintendo kinda did have a route to go down with Yuzu.
Yuzu actually explained in detail how to dump your own keys for your cartridge so that the security could be cracked and from what I’ve heard, those keys are Nintendo’s property and is copyrighted.
In terms of Yuzu itself, yes, it was legal but it was stuff like Lockpick_RCM, Hekete, and Atmosphere that Nintendo was zoning in on.
Of course there was other stuff too like it being leaked that the makers of Yuzu was actually sharing around roms between each other as well as them having a Patreon.
Don’t get me wrong, I stand on the side of emulation, but if Yuzu had gone to court, they very likely could have been destroyed.

            1. I knew it was more to it, I just wasn’t aware that the cartridges had keys that were copyright. I guess they did infact know it was going to be a losing battle. Thanks for all the new info.

        1. SpawnWave made a good point about Yuzu in particular with how the team gave in to Nintendo; basically the point was that Yuzu likely overstepped the safe boundary that most emulators fall under and Nintendo found out where those weakness lie. So if Yuzu didn’t back down Nintendo had a case that would have lent to a new precedent against these public emulators.

Yuzu without a doubt in my mind did some shady stuff both behind closed doors as well as within plain sight (patreon smh). Unlike previous cases of Nintendo vs emulation, I think they did have a good case against Yuzu in part because of how they made it into a business

          1. Yeah that could’ve been a big part of it. They did indeed have enough money to settle. PS: they handed their site to Nintendo. Now Nintendo has the IP address of every single person that downloaded that emulator and can cross reference them with person downloading Roms off of p2p sites.

I feel like a string of suits are eminent in the coming months.

            1. ‘ll never happen XD Nintendo is not Judge Dread.

Asking for personal data based on IP address needs judge autorisation for each IP, and to do that it need police investigation underway, which is not the case for all downloaders. You’re my parano guy of the month !

                1. We all should. Especially us in the US. I get the criticisms for TikTok but there’s a few good users I enjoy following on there, and if those dunces in the government have it their way, there goes that fun lil pastime when I just want to enjoy extremely short attention span funny videos. (Doesn’t help I got crushes on a few of the attractive ladies on there. Especially 1 in particular.) Least I follow the big 3 on other platforms.

                  1. Snapchat was the last app of those kinds that I downloaded. Tiktok is one of the ones I never downloaded, but those videos do make their way onto Instagram, which is where I see them, and they just look like regular videos. I honestly don’t understand that criticism at all. I’m assuming like everything else, tiktok is algorithm based, so you get what you put in. 🤷 I also hate that everyone is so against the government telling us what to do, until it’s something they agree on. Then by all means, take away those rights. Plus, why aren’t parents parenting? If you don’t want your child to use tiktok, ban the site from your ISP website, and on your phones ISP as well. Use parenting app. But I guess that’s too much to do as a parent. And I say this as a father of 3. Oh well, the first domino fell, it’s only a matter of time before others follow.

  1. Definitely reporting this piece of news won’t make this emulator to get noticed by the Nintendo ninjas, right?

    1. Nope. Nintendo ninjas were know to lurk in forums and discord servers where these type of topics are discussed, they aren’t stupid to relay solely on mainstream news websites.

      1. Add to that people shouting all over the internet about the new emulator and openly saying it is based on Yuzu’s source code which on the settlement is clearly stated that no one can use that code, then Nintendo has it quite easy to stop Suyu.

    2. I’m pretty sure Nintendo is already investigating Suyu. The news about this new emulator are all over Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and many other sites. So is pretty sure that Nintendo already knows about it.

  2. Blahblahblah preservation blahblahblah too expensive. Shut the hell up and be better you shot bus riders. Git Gud.

  3. Well done Suyu. I don’t and haven’t used any of these emulators, but they’re providing an essential service. If Nintendo weren’t such rip-off merchants, I’d have some sympathy for them.

But Mario Kart 8 “Deluxe” as an example is a Wii U ports, 10 years old and is still $60 to this day. And all the lazy “remasters”, releases, ports of old games at $60 is a disgrace. Even on the Wii U and 3DS eShop, countless games there were full price right up to the day it closed.

    1. Depends on what you mean by Working. But GPCS4 can play a few PS4 games, and so can KYTY. They’re still early in development, but KYTY is a very promising PS5/PS4 emulator.

  4. There is no legal way around it. These people are nothing but trolls wanting their 5 minutes of fame. Nintendo will have the lawsuit ready before it even releases.

    1. They were also sharing roms among the staff members and some users, one of them even publicly saying they downloaded a leaked copy of Xenoblade. Honestly Yuzu team kinda brought that to themselves, ryujinx and atmosphere (cfw) seems to play more safely so they should be fine.

  5. Actuually they aren’t on a gray area. Just the fact that the emulador is based on Yuzu’s source code puts them against the ropes since on the settlement is clearly stated that no one can take Yuzu’s source code and continue it. Since Suyu is based on Yuzu’s source code, then Nintendo cans stop them since even if they don’t have guides nor distribute keys and games, the emulator is going to need those keys, so it falls on the same thing as Yuzu that it avoids the security measures to be able to run the games.
