(Update) Xbox’s marketing head apparently told an audience “nobody cares about Banjo-Kazooie”

Banjo Kazooie

Update: Aaron Greenberg has implied that he was being sarcastic when he made the remark at the event.

“Correct, I absolutely know how much Banjo-Kazooie means to our fans and gamers everywhere. It holds a special place in my heart, growing up playing these classic games.”

Aaron Greenberg, Xbox Games Marketing at Microsoft, recently attended a Microsoft Flight Simulator event and during the time there a PR person asked fans who had attended which games they wanted to see again, to which one of the attendees shouted “Banjo-Kazooie.” Greenberg heard the reply and apparently said to the audience at the event that “nobody cares about Banjo-Kazooie.” A bizarre statement to make especially considering the critical and sales success Sony has recently had with its Astro Bot platformer.

  1. Not trying to troll or anything: but that is most likely the truth. That IP is old, and the latest games didn’t go well with people the most; and those games are old as well. They probably measured interest in BK with Smash, Rare Collection and Switch Online subscriptions.

Personally I love BK, I would love to see more of it.

    1. ”the latest games didn’t go well with people the most” you mean nuts and bolts… gee sure wonder why it didn’t go well.

    2. @Kantenstain

I agree with you, actually. Yooka-Laylee is another example of a game that didn’t sell well and it was being carried by the legacy of Banjo-Kazooie.

I honestly don’t think a lot of new players today would even enjoy the old games if they played it. Plus they have Astrobot now to make modern 3D platformers, if they want.

      1. EDIT: I just woke up. Sony is Astrobot. So maybe Xbox could use Banjo-Kazooie as their go-to 3D platformer but I agree with other comments that they probably don’t have the talent to make a modern version that players will like.

        1. Then here is the solution GIVE BANJO KAZOOIE BACK TO NINTENDO. I mean if Nintendo can make them look so freaking good in smash they obviously have the skills to really make an actual revival of the Banjo Kazooie series. Banjo is still a good series people do care about it MICROSOFT just did a crappy job with taking care of the Banjo series. Nuts and bolts was garbage there is no doubt in that but I’m telling you if Nintendo had the rights to Banjo the series would be truly awesome once more.

      2. Yooka had atrocious level design. Massive zones with next to nothing in them, collectibles scattered around seemingly aimlessly.

    3. Lmao. “Nobody cares” is not the truth. Clearly, people do care if the series keeps getting mentioned. Even you yourself said you love it. If he said “not enough people care,” then he might have a case. Microsoft would just slap a new Banjo on Game Pass, which would impact its sales. Now if they released it on a Nintendo device? That would be a different story.

        1. I agree. Banjo kazooie is just really dumb and everyone knows it. Look at their pictures for one. If you show that to most people they would be lik, what the heck is that? Some crap version of looney toons? And the game no one even plays it.

        1. You mean like any other company trying to make a profit? Or one that passes on the stamper brothers because they didn’t see a reason to buy them (even though they were offered RARE LTD first) or least a few of their IP’s? You mean care like that?

    4. The truth is, Microsoft has never figured out how to leverage Rare or their IPs. The latest game came out almost 20 years ago and was a spin-off title. Aside from cameos, Banjo-Kazooie hasn’t been playable in their own game in about two console generations.

    5. They’re hard to play with the old janky N64 controls on a modern controller (specifically talking about the NSO version). I’d love to see them revisit the IP and I would LOVE to see a new DK Racing!

      1. most of you are so misguided.

True fans would absolutely adore a rebooted sequel of this franchise. A completely new story and fresh graphics would make this series shine to where it should have been by now! Think of Astrobot or Ratchet and Clank. If someone did a phenomenal job to this Rare property, we could even hope for a fun DK64 remaster (seriously, not trolling here)

In my opinion, Xbox’s marketing head should be fired for laughing that off.

      1. “Rare replay?” Lazy port collection
“Smash bros?” That’s Nintendo asking Microsoft
“Sea of thieves?” New IP has nothing to do with their old school titles.
“ Nintendo were the ones who gave up on Rare.” they were making a new banjo game as one of the launch titles for the GameCube until Xbox bought rare, they never gave up on the bear, Xbox did and nuts and bolts is proof of that

        1. Bk wasn’t planned for GameCube dumbass
Nuts and bolts was rare idea and years ago get over it they are not the flawless company

        2. Bk wasn’t planned for GameCube dumbass
Nuts and bolts was rare idea and years ago get over it they are not the flawless company

      2. Nintendo didn’t give up on Rare, they had little stakes in the company when Microsoft bought them aka they couldn’t do anything about it so they had to sell their shares to them.

  2. They just hire anybody lmao

“What games do you want to see?”
    “Banjo-Kazooie please :)”
“Pfft name 1 person who wants to see that series lmao”

a genius play; 1 billion IQ

  3. Put it back in the hands of Nintendo, watch the magic happen again. The truth is Microsoft can’t do it, they don’t have the talent to do it .

    1. looks at Donkey Kong hiatus
      Neither does Nintendo.
and no, getting a new game every 15-20 years isn’t ethical either, which puts Nintendo’s bigger/more prioritized IPs in a bad light.

  4. Microsoft doesn’t have the talent and is not a video game company… It’s just a commercial company that buys up at all costs in the hope of having “good” games or “good” talents but it’s not the case because everyone deserts the ship. Then each game regresses at a crazy speed, just look at what has become of Fable since, as if by chance, the closure of Lionhead Studios and the departure of Peter Molyneux.
In fact, Microsoft still hasn’t understood that the problem with them is themselves.

  5. It’s actually VERY simple… the acquisition of Rare by Xbox has decimated the once exciting brand. What have they even done? Sea of Thieves? 😂😂😂 Does anyone remember how mind numbing that game was for the first year? It hasn’t gotten much better … and talk about a niche game. Pirates???

  6. If Microsoft don’t believe in the IP, they should sell it. It’s very frustrating to see good IPs being horded by publishers who don’t actually want to use them. Also, it’s this disrespect that the big publishers have these days for what I’d call mid-tier games. Any game that wouldn’t be able to sell 5 million copies+ is considered to be something that “nobody cares about”. This is one sense in which Nintendo are superior to most of their peers (though obviously, they also have their own IPs that they’re failing to use appropriately, but they also have some medium-sized IPs that they look after very well, and they’d never claim “nobody cares” about any of their IPs).

    1. “It’s very frustrating to see good IPs being horded by publishers who don’t actually want to use them.”

Glares at Bandai Namco with Xenosaga, Square-Enix with Xenogears, Nintendo with both Mother/Earthbound and F-Zero, Koei Tecmo with Ninja Gaiden and Sony with Bloodborne.

  7. The sentiment has already been said by other commenters, but there is an audience for Banjo-Kazooie. That audience is simply not widespread on XBOX platforms. The audience for BK is and always has been with Nintendo.

I don’t think they necessarily need to sell the ip to Nintendo, but if they sold the game as an exclusive to Nintendo platforms in the future then they’d make a profit. Nintendo fans love platformers- it’s impossible to argue against that fact, and Banjo-Kazooie has plenty of unique qualities that differentiate it from Mario and other platformers.

Obviously they’d still need to innovate with a new title, and perhaps that is the reason why Microsoft has sat on the ip; they don’t know how to do that with a platformer. It’s never been their bread and butter genre, and without the talent to make a proper sequel the game would be dead on arrival. The last thing we want is for Banjo-Threeie to be bad; that’s the entire reason why people lambasted Nuts and Bolts and refuse to acknowledge it as a true sequel.

    1. Nuts n bolts was.a good game, but they screwed up Banjo’s face. That’s literally it. It’s hard to look at it coming from the earlier games.

  8. Nobody cares about Banjo on Xbox consoles. Switch would sell a shit load, being the kinds of players who actually want those games.

  9. The reason at least for me why banjo kazooie was the best platform game ever was simple rare, they basically said if Nintendo can do it we can do it better also every game raremade was easily the best looking game of that genre, nuts & bolts wasn’t banjo it might of had the characters buts that about it, just give up the best looking graphics the xbox series x can do in banjo game, plus a sequal to kameo and maybe a conker 2 as well, uke what was the point in buying rare if there not gonna bring back all there games would even be happy with a remake like resident 4 and dead space got but all rares n64 games, the only condition they need to do is what ever game they make has to be the most visually impressive game on the console with that rare magic gameplay thrown in…

  10. This feels like a misinterpreted joke, it would be really weird with a straight face to say that like you’re angry with the request. Probably a very dry wit kinda statement was said, but the joke being that people do care about banjo, i would need to hear the audio

  11. Lol Microsoft buying all these developers and don’t know what to do with it 😂 they could literally make so many great games but don’t have the talent to make them. COD will literally be the only reason Microsoft stays afloat.

  12. What he means is, it wouldn’t sell an unrealistic amount of copies.
Now they are multiplatform it would sell a safe 3-4 million copies on the Switch alone, provided it got good review of course. Combined with all other platforms I think it’s a safe 5-6 million.
And that is perfectly fine provided you don’t turn development into a 100 million dollar project.
