Nintendo reconfirms plan to announce successor to Switch in current financial year

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa reiterated at an online press conference today that the company is still planning to announce the successor to the popular Nintendo Switch console during the current financial year which runs until the end of March 2025. Nintendo Switch sales are currently underperforming leading Nintendo to cut its annual profit forecast by 10%. It is not clear when Nintendo plans to announce the successor, but after Christmas seems a safe bet.

“Furukawa said there was no change to Nintendo’s plan to announce a successor to its long-lasting Switch console in the current financial year to March, but did not go into specifics.”

    1. There’s still Donkey Kong Country Returns HD and Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition early next year, actually. Though, only one of those is worth getting excited about if you ask me, and it’s not the Kong.

      1. Also a new Fitness Boxing fills the December slot apparently, it’s just not on the website schedule last time I checked. So Feb release is the biggest question mark, but Metroid Prime 2 I think is quite likely.

  1. Nintendo, I just kinda gave up on them and I’m kinda just going to ignore any more Nintendo News until they finally show the damn thing off.

  2. I am curious if there will be dock/console (whatever it is) exclusive games if the dock acts as its own system. Sturdier Joy Cons would also be welcome.

    As long as it is backwards compatible then my collection stays and all is good. If there are still ports coming to Switch after Switch 2 comes out then successor owners won’t miss out.

  3. I honestly feel like them acknowledging the system should have been done this November instead of May, they could have still done the direct in May, and it would have been a shorter wait time for the reveal of the new system.

  4. Nintendo are being super secret with the switch 2, it worries me so. Even if they announce this thing on March the 31st next year. It still could take them a year to release it, meaning they could roll the release into March 2026 🥲

      1. No, it’s a logical deduction… they are not going to announce a new system before the (very likely) last Christmas of the switch, it would hurt its last sales… And moreover, contrary to what some people think here, backward compatibility is not at all assured, because of the eshop

  5. I think the primary reason they haven’t shown it yet is because we’re now in the thick of the holiday season and they don’t want to take any spotlight away from the Switch when it is still selling strong.

    So then why did they show off Switch in October 2016? Simple: the Wii U was a lost cause by that point. The polar opposite of the current situation.

    1. if anything they didn’t want people buying the Wii U that holiday season as they would rather people waited and buy the switch the following year. In this case buying a switch this year probably doesn’t preclude someone from buying a switch 2 in the future because that console is likely to be backwards compatible with the switch

    2. I believe it’s because the last time they revealed a system 1.5 years ahead of release Crysis 3, Colonial Marines and Metro Last Light were cancelled. Weren’t Battlefield, Lords of Shadow 2 and Bioshock Infinite also coming at one point?

      I think Nintendo want to reveal the system as close to release as possible because then they’re sure what games are really coming

  6. Fans: We want Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Switch.
    Nintendo: Fine. It will come out in March which is the same month the Switch will be old news. Never ask us for anything ever again.;
