New Yooka-Replaylee trailer released

Yooka-Laylee released 8 years ago as of this year, back when the Nintendo Switch was just released. Coincidentally a remastered and enhanced version of the game, Yooka Replaylee, will be launching during the first year of the Switch successor console’s availability. It is releasing on the PlayStation 5, PC and Xbox Series X/S as well, but it coming to the Switch 2 has notably made Yooka-Replaylee one of the first Switch 2 games announced that is not a first-party title from Nintendo.

That said, the game hasn’t had a lot of news since October of last year. Today’s Kinda Funny Showcase, however, changed that. A new trailer featuring an explanation and showcase of the game’s gameplay was revealed. The game is still slated for a 2025 release, so no specific release date has been given yet. Nevertheless, you can see the new trailer down below.

  1. The new Yooka-Replaylee trailer looks absolutely charming! As someone who grew up on Rare’s N64 classics, seeing Playtonic continue to evolve the 3D platformer formula while honoring that legacy is genuinely exciting. The expanded moveset and the replay mechanics that let you revisit levels with new abilities really addresses the backtracking fatigue that plagued the original Yooka-Laylee. The art style has come such a long way too — much more polished and cohesive than the first game.

On a slightly different note, my kids have been obsessed with this browser-based football game called Head Football while we wait for the Yooka-Replaylee release. It’s cartoonish, no violence, runs on any device without downloads, and the matches are short enough that I don’t have to pry them away when it’s time for homework or dinner. I’ve actually started using it as a reward for finishing chores — the competitive element keeps them engaged without the usual screen time battles. The oversized heads and ridiculous power-ups are genuinely hilarious too, very much in the same playful spirit as Yooka-Laylee’s humor.

Any word on whether this will support local co-op on Switch? That’s the make-or-break feature for our family game nights.

Counting down the days — thanks for the coverage!
