Mario has acquired quite a few adventures since his inception and some of you might be wondering why the team picked Super Mario Galaxy as the inspiration for the latest movie. Speaking to Polygon the legendary Shigeru Miyamoto and illumination CEO Chris Meledandri explained why they landed on Super Mario Galaxy for the latest film and it steams from the fact that the first film was set in the Mushroom Kingdom and they wanted somewhere new to visit and the endless possibilities of Galaxy seemed a natural choice.
Polygon: When it became clear that you wanted to make a Mario movie sequel, how did you figure out where to go next? Do you think about the world of Mario in the same way you think of the potential for sequels and spinoffs in the Despicable Me and Minions sense?
Meledandri: When we started talking about the idea, it begins our process of collaboration, where we began to discuss different possibilities. One could have assumed that we might’ve just gone to Super Mario World or Odyssey, and we talked about all those possibilities. But when we began to talk about [Super Mario] Galaxy, there were qualities of Galaxy that were immediately exciting for us; the cinematic possibilities, as well as some of the more dramatic aspects of Galaxy; just the whole feeling of the drama that’s associated with Rosalina as a character and how that’s reflected in the music of Galaxy. That feeling was something we thought could really inform a new story.
Miyamoto: In my discussion with Chris-san after the first movie, when we started talking, we never framed it as a sequel, but we framed it as the next movie. That left an impression on me. Within our discussion, from the Illumination side, the idea of Galaxy potentially came up. As I thought about it, that could work because the first movie really was about adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom and the next evolution would be to expand the world, go out to the galaxy, and it had a lot of potential, as Chris-san mentioned.
When we were making the first movie, we discussed and thought, OK, we’re not going to try to recreate the game. That wouldn’t be fun. But then as we’re working on the movie, we realized there are parts that really align with the game itself. Likewise, when we’re working on this second movie, we didn’t want to frame it as a sequel. And yet, as we’re working through it, there were elements that we thought could be based on the first movie, and there were moments where they were a sequel, and all of it kind of fit together.
Thanks to Greatsong1 for sending in the news tip!

Money
I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready for me money
Sir, why did you build a second krusty krab right next to the original?
Money!
Ah yes my favorite part of Galaxy 1 and 2 was when Fox McCloud met up with the team, and became crucial to the story for the last half of the film, just like the game. Forget Lubba, captain of the starship Mario.
I don’t understand. You’re giving a sarcastic response as if Miyamoto had said something like “We wanted to make the movie like the game” when he said that’s what they didn’t want to do starting with the first movie.
More reason not to watch these movies I picked up on that. Just avoid it and know to not watch these movies simple they aren’t for fans like us the rest of you go enjoy
Did you not read the article? These movies aren’t supposed to be faithful adaptation of the games. It would be too predictable and boring.
No id rather a proper faithful adaption with everything including games and no it would not be boring. Did you like the original Mario movie from the 80’s?
Damn you hated it that much I just passed I knew it wasn’t for me
Ok they did what they wanted and went with Galaxy, there was a Galaxy reference made by peach in the first movie, so we all knew this was coming.
But now Galaxy is done, they can either continue Galaxy exploration, or come and do other storys.
Mario World, Yoshi’s island, Wario world, or Mario Oddesey would be amazing choices.
Mario Land 2 movie would be funny if done right, illumination would do it plenty of justice 😂
I’d love an FZero movie made from the user’s manual story on the SNES.
My two favorite parts is when Star Fox give the others a ride to another galaxy and Mario, Luigi, Toad and Yoshi entered Fossil Falls.
They implied it in the first movie
They Should have done Super Mario Bros. 3 or World for Yoshi and the Kooplings, Mario Sunshine for Bowser Jr., Land for Daisy, Wario, and Waluigi, then Galaxy. More movies, more time to give better story tellingz more money. But no, they just rushed everything and was sloppy because Miyamoto himself Does Not Care About Story.
It doesn’t matter why they choose thos, because it has nothing from the game, just like the first movie. An empty shell with no ghost on it. Only to worship and throw money at it. Why even bother or be creative. People will come and consume like Zombies flesh. I saw both movies and both were trash, but that is sadly the trend nowadays. Creativity is dead.
That’s why indie games thrive right now. They are just pure creativity with no limitations for the creators to go crazy with their ideas.
And while I like that, I feel even more disappointed by the companies, who made games big, who came up with new concepts. They have the tools, but they lost the ability to use them somehow. It can’t be, that remakes and remasters are our future, because people are than creatively bankrupt. I want to give Nintendo, Sega, Capcom and all the other well known companies my money, but not for slop like what they made lately. The quality of their latest games did not spoke for me, it was just brainless entertainment, which is for me, boring and disappointing. I know that the old games were simple, because they had limited space, but that is not the case today. We can have high quality games like cinema movies, yet they are just fast food; interesting for the moment, but not healthy for a long term. I want that those games question more and challenge the player with a compelling story. That is not that hard to do and yet, it feels like no one is really giving the effort. Even Final Fantasy is now nothing special anymore.
It can’t be that we humans are than creatively dead. It really would be sad if so.
Pefect example why the movie is the mess it currently is. They contradict themselves even in the interview. Sometimes it’s a sequel, sometimes it’s not. Sometimes there’s character development, until they just decide they don’t feel like finishing said development.
The most insulting part of all this is “we’re not going to try to recreate the game. That wouldn’t be fun.” Then why did you call it the mario galaxy movie? The name “The mario galaxy movie” implies this is going to be a movie based on the video game, especially because it is the only mario game in the mainline series that attempts to tell a more cinematic and deeper than normal narrative. We went into this expecting them to really dial in on a story based on mario galaxy’s story. Instead we got a mess of ideas with no cohesive story or narrative whatsoever. Just because the mario games don’t need a good story, that doesn’t mean the movies don’t either
