Games Radar has been fishing around the EDGE magazine archives and has published a 2005 EDGE interview with The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma. Mr. Aonuma recounted that Shigeru Miyamoto asked him to join the Zelda team after seeing his Zelda-like game Marvelous on the Super Nintendo. Mr. Aonuma says that he really wanted to incorporate “some essence of Zelda” into Marvelous and then after the game had been released Mr. Miyamoto asked him whether he would like to work on The Legend of Zelda franchise and he’s been on it ever since.
“Marvelous was said to be similar to The Legend Of Zelda in terms of gameplay, and as a matter of fact… I really wanted to incorporate some essence of Zelda into it.”
And whether this was his way of manifesting it or mere coincidence, he recalls that afterwards Miyamoto approached him to ask if he’d be interested in working on Zelda, “I said: Yes!” and then the rest was history. He would go on to be responsible for dungeon design in the 1998 epic.”

epic, …? :P
I already knew this, but it’s fun to read his reactions to known stories.
That should have been a full stop 😊 The epic he was referring to was of course Ocarina of Time.
