Dragon Quest XI S is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this September

Update: This isn’t a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition as it doesn’t feature save transfers or an upgrade path.

After being leaked last month by the Taiwan Ratings Board, Square Enix has now officially announced the release of Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition on Nintendo Switch 2. Set for launch on 24th September, the Switch 2 version arrives just a few days before the 7th anniversary of the original Switch 1 version, adding new graphics/performance optimization modes. A physical release has also been announced, but it will unfortunately be a Game-Key Card, presumably due to the game’s larger file size. Square Enix also said that save data from the original Nintendo Switch version will not transfer over.

  1. “Game key due to presumably games larger size.”*

*Due to SE being cheap and/or not knowing how to compress down files.

  2. Will there be an upgrade path? If so, then you can buy the original switch version physical and then upgrade it digitally so that you can save space.

  3. If there’s really no upgrade path, I guess I’ll just sell my Switch 1 copy of the game and buy the Switch 2 physically. Unless it’s a game key card, in which case I’ll just buy digital. Pretty frustrating news if all that’s the case.
