Nintendo 3DS: Sony President Talks Nintendo 3DS

Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment’s worldwide studios has spoken to Game Informer about the company’s forthcoming PlayStation Vita and its rival, the Nintendo 3DS. Here’s what Yoshida had to say about the Nintendo 3DS:

It’s suspicious that Nintendo is releasing a second circle pad attachment for the 3DS after gamers universally praised the Vita’s dual analog sticks. Can you talk about what looks like an attempt by Nintendo to keep up with Sony?

Well it’s not like they looked at PS Vita and said “we need to do that as well.” I don’t know. It’s clear that they didn’t believe a second analog was necessary when they designed the 3DS, so I can only guess it was requested by Capcom’s side. Maybe a Capcom producer told Nintendo that to play Monster Hunter we need [two] analog sticks. That I don’t know, so I can only guesstimate. It was a bit shocking to see what they came up with.

Touching on the 3DS again, it seems like Nintendo responded to the Vita’s low price tag by dropping the 3DS’ cost even lower. It appears to be a direct response from Nintendo. Is it exciting to see Nintendo, which has had a death grip on the handheld market, seemingly react to the Vita’s hype?

I don’t personally believe that they dropped the price of the 3DS to respond to our pricing. We didn’t price PS Vita to their price, either. We had that plan since the last couple years. My personal guesstimate is that they have their business plan and goals to sell a certain amount of 3DS units, and they realized post-launch was that the pricing was not helping them to achieve the goal that they set. That’s my estimate. As far as if I’m excited, I’m not sure. If the 3DS sells like crazy and no one is interested in PS Vita, that’s a problem. There are lots of analysts talking about, “well, you know there are smart phones, there’s no need for dedicated portable game machines.” I don’t believe it. But if they point to certain performance of the 3DS and say the smartphone is here, it doesn’t help us either. I like to see healthy competition between Nintendo’s system and ours because it helps innovation. It’s always a good thing to have.

    • Right! I totally respect this guy for his responses. It almost makes me want to buy Sony products again lol. The game industry needs them both. It’s good for us gamers. I’d be sad if either company went away.

    • Just when I was excited to read a bunch of posts about how Sony had some very reasonable concepts and comments… We get hit by… Religious spammers?!

      What. The. Fu**

  1. Yes fight off those horrible smartphones that wish to dominate with their shit touch screen only controls. 3DS + Vita all the way, can’t wait for the good games to come on both systems, much better than the Angry Birds bollocks.

    • If I had a choice between an iPhone and a PS Vita, I would choose the Vita. And this is coming from a person who has never bought a Sony gaming product to this date. I just don’t want the smartphones to take over everything!!

    • Given all the tools at Sony like Jack Tretton have said in the past and Sony’s consistent “The Vita is not competing with the 3DS” to the point it’s like a catchphrase, I can only assume the interviewer was trying to get a rise out of him.

    • Well that’s GameInformer for ya. Sure they’re really excited about Skyward Sword (cuz it’s convenient for them to be IMO) but they’ve never been the most Nintendo friendly as a whole IMP either. I don’t like a lot of the angles they play when it comes to Nintendo, but they’re reader base, at least the ones who comment on they’re website, REALLY annoy the piss outta me -_____-

They’re just sooo… I guess ignorant would be the best way to describe them [the commenters].

  2. I think Nintendo decided on their own idea to add the second circle pad, and drop the price. It had nothing to do with Sony, that i can guarantee because Sony has always been the one to try and steal ideas from Nintendo. Add to that, the fact that Nintendo has no need to steal ideas because they’re the most original gaming company there is. They also have the most gaming consoles, handheld and otherwise.

    • Seriously, the interview must be a troll trying to recruit roommates for his lonely bridge bottom. I agree with you 100%. It makes absolutely no sense that the second circle pad and price drop would have anything to do with Sony. Come to think of it, has Nintendo even mentioned Sony in the past 4 months? O_o

    • It doesn’t. It’s just people generally dislike Sony’s (or Jack Tretton’s) comments and therefore respond with a well-thought out, incredibly mature “SONY SUCKS!!!”

      • Tretton and Kutaragi could have increased Sony’s favorability by simply learning how to shut their mouths. Those two did more damage to the brand than any bad games and fanboy bashing ever could.

    • You want to know the reason I think Sony sucks? It’s not because of anything that anyone said. It is because of their actions. Here are my reasons. 1. In the early 2000′s, Sony included rootkits on their music CD’s so they could monitor Windows PC’s for pirating. Upon being sued, it was also found out that the CD used bits of code from VLC media player and other open source software, which breaks the GPL usage agreement…. For more see my next comment…

    • 2. They removed the ability to install Linux on the PS3, which was a well known feature. 3. They lost the credit card, and other information of their customers due to their using an outside security company that they failed to check on. The information wasn’t even encrypted. 5. They recently released an update that makes you agree to give up your rights to sue Sony in a class action suit, or you will lose access to PSN. Those are 5 very good reasons to not like Sony.

  3. I respect this guy so much. Sure, I usually lean to the Nintendo side of discussions, but I do plan on getting a Vita and lots of producers from Sony and Microsoft (as well as other game developers) have my respect. The president’s last line was brilliant as well.

  4. OH MY GOD. This is the first article I’ve every seen about Sony talking about the 3DS that doesn’t bash Nintendo. They should make this guy like the president of Sony Computer Entertainment’s worldwide studios, oh wait THEY ALREADY DID.

It’s just good to see that for once Sony, or any gaming company in general, isn’t going at the throat of another gaming company.

  5. I really like Mr. Yoshida-san! He is like Iwata. A bussiness man who knows how to run a company without bashing others. But, sony will never fight against smartphones… it produces it too!

  6. I respect this man cuz he knows if 3Ds fail with smart phone the vita will fail he also respectively commented on the 3DS and price drops. unlike jack tretton who bashes nintendo all the time -.- but thisn man over here is obviously the better man

  7. I love the way he’s thinking! There is no that fanboys or this fanboys! I hope more people should thinking like that rather than arguing which one is better,, all of them have pros and cons! But i’m here as Nintendo fan, but i agree the vita have better graphic and some good title line-up for launch. But who know how their sale will be on the launch day when Mario Kart 3D is already on sale and soo perfect for Christmas present!

  8. Whoever asked these questions seems like a 12 year old fanboy.

The answers seemed like a professional business person. Good for them!!!

  9. I love the neutrality in this guy’s responses. Nintendo and Sony definitely should be working together to squash these people who think smartphones will replace handheld gaming systems. :p

  10. The responses given to those questions were really good. They were smart business responses. the questions were biased which made the responses even more impressive.

    • Game Informer is like the IGN of game magazines. Of course, what do you expect from a magazine ran by a retailer (GameStop)? Haha! I never take anything they say seriously, regardless of their bias. They’re a bunch of unintelligent knuckle-draggers writing for that magazine.

      • I think they’re all rude trolls but they make me lol thus I enjoy their magazine.(Based upon reading the feedback section/some of their troll articles(Game infarcer/Mad Cow Barbecue(I think that’s what it was called))

        • xD I remember Mad Cow barbecue… but nevertheless, what has been said about Game Informer above is true. You’ll notice that when they do things like staff picks on their favorite video games, you’ll find maybe 3 Nintendo games in the 50+ picks whilst the rest are M rated shooters, open world’s, zombie games, etc, and there’s hardly ever a full article on a Nintendo game besides the biggest ones like Brawl and Galaxy and Skyword Sword. This is why I subscribe to Nintendo Power for real Nintendo news, which is actually a pretty decent magazine, and I’m hoping that with the Wii U’s release, the magazine will return to it’s former greatness. (I’m talkin’ bout 140+ pages in one issue, baby! The current ones only have like 60-70 pages, mostly because of a sorrowful lack of decent games to discuss) :(

  11. I guesstimate that that the 3DS will sell quite a bit more units than the Vita, but this is all just an estimation I’ve come up with….. guesstimate

        • The GCN was the superior console, in my opinion. :(

In any case, the PS2′s price went down rather quickly if I recall, as it had a rocky start. That probably helped. It was also a DVD player, which was the reason it ended up winning in the first place. XD

          • oh i completly agree, ssbm couldve been the only game in it and i still wouldve bought it. but sales would dissagre with both of us. also look at the tablet sales. apple is dominating and their piece of shit is way over priced

      • I’ve always preferred PS2 to the GCN mainly because it had more titles I actually wanted to play (RPGs, EQ Online Adventures, GTA, and wrestling titles) even though when I finally got a GCN it was far more price friendly than the PS2 (and WWE Day of Reckoning was so much like WWF No Mercy it was awesome).

Of that previous generation I preferred DC over PS and N64, but N64 over PS. It was mainly down to the far superior wrestling titles N64 had at the time, Zelda, Conkers, etc. Although PS did have Musashi, Bushido Blade, and steamrolled N64 on the RPG front. By the time GCN and PS2 came out I had to rely on GBA for my RPG fix when it came to Nintendo systems.

  12. Yeah I still don’t like sony much but there consoles are lame accept vita and sure are expensive though I mean the 3ds is more than worth it but. I have earned a chunk of respect for sony but not even close to me leaving nintendo for sony that is never gonna happen!

  13. Simple Game Informer was looking for flame bait so that they could get more hits a problem with most gaming sites these days IMHO but after not getting it this article will be buried behind another one of Jack Tretton bone headed anti-Nintendo rants which will be plastered all of the front pages.

  14. Look, if the second circle pad was an actual response to the dual analog from the Vita, then Nintendo would have done it much earlier than this. The $250 price for the Vita isn’t really a response to the 3DS’ original price either, since that price is the only fair price the Vita can get. Any higher or lower makes the Vita look suspicious. Nintendo didn’t lower the price because of Vita’s pricing announcement, because again, they would have done that earlier on. They lowered it because $250 was just too damn high for the 3DS in general.

  15. Huge respect for those comments – clearly spoken by an educated man. Good job for Sony to shed it’s cockiness of the 90′s. :)

  16. I have so much respect for this guy after reading this. The interviewer was basically setting him up for him to bash Nintendo, and he didn’t take the opportunity. Very uncharacteristic of Sony, and really nice to see.

  17. God aren’t those just the most fonboyish questions ever asked? Guy might as well been under the table while asking them if you catch my drift.

  18. Even though I’m a Nintendo fan, I’ve played Sony since the first playstation. It is out of respect and that they do have good quality games. But then when ppl hype it up to the extreme, one is better than the other. That’s when rage wars start. I may pick up a vita as well depending on the price of the games.

  19. the interviewer might be too busy to think up good questions trying to lick Yoshida’s balls.

That said I’m very surpised someone at sony has such level of maturity, after seeing what jack tretton has come up with, i did not expect someone with such innovative and mature outlook on their relationship with nintendo come from sony. Cheers

  20. wait what? I’m not used to Sony not talking shit so this is weird o_0

anyway if they keep this up my respect for them will grow and i will stop hating them!

  21. “It’s suspicious that Nintendo is releasing a second circle pad attachment for the 3DS after gamers universally praised the Vita’s dual analog sticks.”

LOL. It wasn’t suspicious when Sony copied the motion controls? Or the touch screen?

    • you were obviously riding the fanboy bandwagons cock really hard that youre retarded ass mustve not notice that SONY said NOTHING about nintendo copying the 2nd anolog stick

  22. Finally, someone in Sony who doesn’t lie thorough their teeth and claim these things. It’s annoying that the interviewer was basically trying to get him to see it from that point of view though…quite biased…

  23. Very glad that Sony is staying level and Nintendo is staying level. They both know, we can’t keep trying to knock each other down if we want to stay alive and thats a good thing! Be competitive but fight Apple! Fight them with full force!

  24. Well, having two companies respect each other is very good to have. I doubt that they will team up to stop the increased spreading of the smart phone, but it would be a nice thought anyways. Never bad to have friendly competition.

I actually like what this guy said. And this is coming from a guy who usually despises Sony.

“I like to see healthy competition between Nintendo’s system and ours because it helps innovation. It’s always a good thing to have.”

That makes COMPLETE sense. When two companies compete with each other, usually the quality of the product(s) increases and/or the price(s) of the product(s) go down. He actually makes me feel comfortable reading this (compared to what Jack Tretton says occasionally).

Heck, I might buy a Vita if they continue to be kind to us and I see games that I like (the FF10 remake looks fine to me as well as Street Fighter x Tekken). And this is coming from a guy who has never bought a Sony gaming product in his life!!

  25. good news from sony. nintendo and sony’s rivalry is not a bad thing at all. it actually helps with the economy. if only sony or nintendo were alive, or even microsoft, they could price their video games pretty high, but because of competition between the three, they are constantly changing prices to compete with others. without the rivalry, we would not see the better innovations the companies are making either. :P

  26. I like how Sony lovers aren’t complaining about the Vita’s battery life(Which lasts 3 to 5 hours WITHOUT any network features on!), but they constantly hammer the 3DS battery. And the Vita is also very big and not very portable. So when it comes to portability(What a portable is meant for) the 3DS is much better than the Vita. I love how powerful the Vita is, but somehow that power is turning it more into a wireless home console than a portable.

  27. Why can’t all employees, and, heck, even fanboys be like this? Without competition the gaming industry would be at a standstill. So go ahead and choose one console or platform over another, just don’t shove it down the throats of other gamers!

  28. Why are people hating on each other??? I hate sony cuz they always have to talk shit bout nintendo…if u have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all SONY!!!
    -.- Can’t every1 just get along?

  30. uhhh this isn’t the way how microsoft started with the xbox? the epic battle for years between nintendo vs sonny…..and a little boy appear xD

  31. Anyway,I like Sony vs Nintendo. It keeps things epic. Reply on which system you’re getting please. (or have(in the 3DS case).

  32. I hate to spam guys, but real Christians don’t tell people what they have to do. Our purpose as believers is to draw you to Christ not agrivate you with the ten commandments. READ ROMANS VERY IMPORTANT!
