Nintendo 3DS: Cut The Rope Is Ridiculously Expensive On Nintendo 3DS eShop

Ouch, Cut The Rope which retails on Apples App Store for a mere 69p will cost Nintendo 3DS owners a rather pricey £4.50 ($7), which is over six and a half times what it costs on the App Store. Anyone thinking of picking this up on the Nintendo 3DS eShop, or will you be sticking to playing Cut The Rope on your phone?

      1. http://www.kongregate.com/

Tis an awesome gaming website. It’ll satisfy all your mini-gaming needs and, unlike iPhones and other Apple tech, it won’t charge you, or screw you over with Terms and Conditions, or routinely break/malfunction on you. The most you can expect from Kongregate is a little lag.

  1. This is where Nintendo will get crushed by mobile gaming… I have Cut The Rope on my phone and I’m not going to pay $7 to have it on a 2nd device. And that’s a shame because I am excited to see games like this coming to 3DS… but I just can’t support it at that price.

They need to reevaluate their eShop prices.

    1. It wasn’t Nintendo who decided the price, it was the developer of the game. Actually there are games sold for 2$ on the eshop, they could go for that price…This is not the first case of overpriced ports, Plants vs Zombies is sold at 8€ against 0.79€ -__-

    2. I can’t speak for everyone, but I think if people see that a game is worth it, they’ll spend the cash. I, for example, played the free version of Zenonia on my Andriod (the full version is 1.99) because it looked like an interesting game. When I first played it, I was instantly sucked into the game but felt the game was too awesome to play with a mere touch screen. I found out that it was also on the eShop for 7.99. I spent the cash because the game was worth it. It’s most awesome with actual buttons too IMO,

  2. This is Apples doing, they’re stirring up the shareholders who also have shares in Nintendo and getting developers to sell their games for higher prices on the 3DS e-shop, Apple is dirty like that and it is something they would do.

    1. Actually, I wouldn’t put it past a company to not do that. Apple knows their games suck, so instead of trying to beat the competition with good games, they instead want to undermine the competition’s strengths.

  3. these kinds of games are better on smart phones and tablets
even the controls, the 3DS touch screen isn’t multi touch
not mentioning it will cost 7 times more money

  4. If it was £2 I would have considered it, but not £4.50…Quite a sneaky move to put the “iPhone gaming vs 3DS gaming” arguement more in Apple’s favour.

But what about the levels where you have to cut two ropes at the same time? Replaced with new levels? Removed completely? Or just ignored as a glitch? >.< That sucks a bit.

  5. I think this is the publishers trying to take advantage of gamers. People who game on phones are usually the ones who would have never considered playing/buying a dedicated gaming system. That’s why stuff is cheaper on phones. They’re trying to up the price for gamers on dedicated machines to make a better profit for themselves. There are a number of games that I would pay that much for, but such a simple game like Cut the Rope is NOT one of them. I hear the Xbox 360 version is also very expensive.

  7. Maybe because of the 3ds has better abilities and is 10 times better then the app store version and it is dual screen not to mention the makers are dumb

  8. Maybe because of the 3ds has better abilities and is 10 times better then the app store version and it is dual screen not to mention the makers are dumb I mean really!

  9. Alot of game prices on DSiWare/eShop are too expensive, that’s why I’ve got my iPhone for these type of little quick go games. Don’t get me wrong I love my 3DS, but some of the stuff on eShop costs far to much.

  10. RIP-OFF! really. Why can’t Nintendo stick flash on 3DS internet so you can play online games, instead of companies ripping people off. Nintendo had flash on wii so why not 3DS so these companys don’t rip people off?

  12. Yes expensive. I was about to download Zenonia yesterday and to my suprise it is priced at around 7 gbp which is actually around 10 times more expensive than the iOS version. What the f**k is going on?? I already owned it on iOS so no.

    1. I felt that Zenonia was worth the price I paid for it on the eShop. It’s an epic game and I spend a lot of time doing side quests and leveling up lol. I actually think it’s more expansive than a lot of retail games. Plus, I like Gamevil, I don’t mind supporting their work.

    1. Sorry published by accident, meant to say:
It’s not expensive, the 3DS just has a different pricing system. This is what Iwata meant at GDC, this game is probs worth the asking price, but just because it’s downloadable people compare it to the iOS version and decide it’s too expensive…
And it’s probs different from the iPhone and Android versions anyway

  13. Yeah, I payed like 10 bucks for phoenix wright on my wii, and here my mom goes and buys it on her iphone (with the added chapter, which i needed to pay an extra amount for) for only 2 bucks! Gee Nintendo, If you’re going to rape me at least treat me right!

    1. You know nothing of the costs involved. It probably took a lot more for them to create the DSi version, and they probably don’t get as big a cut from the sales as they would on smart phone games. Also, it’s not necessarily being greedy anyway, it’s just price-matching. Most games on the iPhone are free of £0.99, so they match that price, similarly most games on the eShop/DSi Shop are £4.50/500 points. They’re just using the standard price. They’d be stupid to sell it for £1.80 (The lowest price bracket) Just because the iPhone version is a lot cheaper, if they believe it can sell at £4.50, they will sell it at £4.50. It’s common sense

  14. I probably won’t spend my money on this game for any platform. It looks like all the other gum ball machine applications out there for smart phones.

  15. I think you should make it clear that it’s DSiWare not a 3DS eShop title…
You can get DSiWare through the eShop but it’s not exactly the same thing…

  16. It really is kinda… confusing the price difference between the iPhone version and the DS version. I don’t think there’s anything they could do to suddenly make the game worth 7 times the price of the old one.
It’s really just a case of “We can milk more money out of console owners”
The iPhone and AppStore has shown that developers can make awesome games and make a lot of money without charging customers a lot.

And anyone who seriously bashes the iPhone and claims that it’s value in gaming is worthless is being rather stupid/ignorant. There’s no reason why iPhone gaming and dedicated console gaming can’t co-exist. It certainly does co-exist in my house. I have my 3DS for those exclusive Nintendo games, and I have my iPhone for basically everything else haha.

We’re seeing tons of games flowing both ways, console to iPhone, and iPhone to console.
Pop from nnooo was one of the first WiiWare games ever, and also one of first to go from WiiWare to iPhone.
Plants vs. Zombies is on every platform, and is just as fun on iPhone as it is on PC.
Anomaly Warzone Earth is a recent PC game on iPhone now.
NyxQuest is another recent WiiWare to iPhone game. LostWinds to follow shortly.
Burn the Rope / Cut the Rope originated on iPhone and now are available on Nintendo systems, they’re definitely not “the best” of iPhone, but the fact that they’re being ported across says something. It’s a shame that the “mood” is being killed by the price disparity/comparison.
Then again, games on consoles have always been overpriced.

All those who love to bash iPhone game, obviously have no idea what they’re talking about. There’s really no reason to get so defensive over Nintendo, they can take care of themselves. I’ve been a Nintendo fan for as long as I can remember, I still have my original Gameboy tucked away in my desk.
I always have my iPhone with me, though, and not my 3DS. (Although Nintendo has done a great job of adding features to the 3DS which better encourage it to be a device to always carry with you. And the eShop is definitely a step in the right direction when it comes to downloadable games.)

Something that Nintendo seems to be slowly working on with DSiWare and WiiWare is updating games when bugs are discovered etc etc.
You can’t update retail games, which is a reason why retail games will eventually become less standard.
Downloadable games are the future, especially with storage space being so cheap and plentiful, and download speeds are faster than ever, there’s no reason you can’t download a full retail game over-the-air. Pokemon White/Black where what 250MB? That’s trivial to be able to download in this day and age.
Problem with retail is that there is no way to update the game to add features, or fix the inevitable bugs that sneak by. With downloadable games, it’s easy for a developer to add new features or fix things that need to be fixed.

I could go on and on about reasons why iPhone gaming is strong, and is not going anywhere anytime soon.
So chill out, play a game, and just have fun.

  17. Funny how not one person even realizes a very obvious fact about iPhone gaming vs 3DS gaming…. rather bitch about a few measly bucks here and there… here’s a hint:

    Buy a 3DS = $1000 -(games – $1-5 ish) – Total cost for iPhone mobile gaming = $1000+

So OBVIOUSLY 3DS gaming costs way less in the long run, not to mention the costs involved to continue using an iPhone, like plans etc, so buying a few ds games with the tonne of money you just saved not buying an iphone is clearly the best option for real gamers.

    Hope this helps.

    1. Buy an iPhone = $1000 -(games – $1-5 ish) – Total cost for iPhone mobile gaming = $1000+

      Buy a 3DS = $200ish -(games – $3-12 ish) – Total cost for 3ds mobile gaming = $200+
