Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo 3DS Poised To Surpass First-Year Sales Of The Nintendo DS

According to the the NPD Group the Nintendo 3DS is about to surpass the first year sales of the immensely popular Nintendo DS. After eight months on the market the Nintendo 3DS has sold over 1.65 million units in the United States. Heres some other impressive figures to get your head round:

  • Nintendo sold more than 675,000 combined hardware units in October. This includes more than 250,000 units of Nintendo 3DS, nearly 250,000 Wii  systems and nearly 180,000 units of the Nintendo DS family of systems.
  • For the year, Nintendo has sold a combined 7 million hardware units and more than 55 million units of software have been sold for Nintendo platforms. Both of these numbers should increase with the Nov. 20 launch of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for Wii.
  • Both Wii, up 8 percent year over year, and Nintendo DS, up 23 percent over the previous month, demonstrated strong momentum heading into their respective sixth and eighth holiday seasons. In total, the two platforms have sold more than 87 million combined hardware units and more than 540 million combined units of software in the United States.

      1. What is wrong with you people? You’re first, nobody cares. That literally means absolutely nothing, and is irrelevant. And I’ve yet to see a commenter who feels the need to state their the first comment actually offer any words of value. Man, people are dumb.

        1. we do it because people like you get so pissed off about it. Yeah, he’s first, let him be first, you’re comment offers nothing of value either.

  1. Anyway, for a serious comment:

I keep telling people this, but everyone still acts like 3DS is failing. Silly Sony fanboys.

    1. If sony fans say the 3DS fails then the PS vita fails… FACT

It’s true because the Vita cost more then the 3DS at launch and Sony is gunna lose money for every Vita sold.

No one whould pay $300 for a Vita when the 3DS was only $250 and the 3DS did not sell.

      1. True to an extent.

I expect the Vita to surpass 3DS first year sales(Hard core gamers buy things really fast!), but in the long run I expect the 3DS to do better. Pretty much the same situation as the DS to the PSP.

    1. I think that’s for Europe only, but Best Buy has announced two bundles. One has the red 3DS with SM3DL and the other I think is the blue one with Ocarina of Time. In both of them, you save $30 by buying the bundles. These will be available on Black Friday, so it’s likely that you won’t find one since they’ll be gone. Incidentally, gamestop is offering a $25 gift card for every 3DS system purchase, so that’s pretty good, too.

      1. Actually it’s black with neato LoZ symbol thingies all over it. If the GBA Ambassador games aren’t EPIC I’m not gonna get one.

  2. But Nintendo is still doomed, right?

Seriously though, apparently the 3DS was the best selling system this past week:

The Wii pretty good too not far from 360 sales. Keep in mind that both the 360 and the PS3, specially the PS3, have been getting big games left and right, so the fact that the Wii can still keep up with a lack of games is pretty impressive, and it may increase sales once Skyward Sword comes out.

The 3DS has been gaining momentum and has been selling better in the US and Europe regions all these weeks than in Japan. That already tells you how many units they might sell with the release of SM3DL in the next week and then Mario Kart 7. And it looks like it won’t stop there because Kid Ikarus is due in January, and then the other games such as Kingdom Hearts, Resident Evil Revelations, an Original Zelda game has been announced, etc. In Japan, they will get the New Love Plus and Gundam bundles as well as a 3DS bundle for MH3G and the circle pad bundle of that game.

  3. I hope the hard-core gaming press stops referring to the 3DS as a failure. That’s all they ever describe it as. I have had mine for about three weeks. It’s my first handheld, and I am in love with it. I think it’s more of bad marketing by Nintendo than anything. The thing is amazing.

    1. Marketting could be one thing, but it’s more about the lack of games at the beginning. Then again, I’ve been using it since launch, so I guess it depends. As for the press, they’ll always see Nintendo as doomed. It’s been like that since the NES era, and it’s not likely to change. In fact, the very day that articles about the 3DS selling 140,000 in Japan with SM3DL started to pop up, there were articles saying that not even Mario could “save” the system. Everyone forgets that the DS had a very rough start, though it was released during the holiday season.

They were also comparing sales by saying that the 3DS had only sold over 6 million units compared to the DS’s 150 million units! I mean, does that even make sense? Analysts and the gaming media must be irritated by now.

      1. Excellent points. Games definitely hurt it. There still aren’t many. I have Tetris and that’s it. Waiting for SMB3DL. I wasn’t running out to get 3D versions of Star Fox 64 and Ocarina. I won’t buy those. But I will get Paper Mario, Mario Kart, Luigi’s Mansion, etc. I bring it wherever I go, and show it off all the time. I’ve never had someone not be impressed. The AR has tons of potential, but I feel like the marketing department dropped the ball on that. Maybe they didn’t want to oversell it. I work in marketing, so I have a bias there.

        1. You should definitely get Dead or Alive Dimensions. It has a faster gameplay style than SSF 4 3D, and the 3D is pretty good, too. I would also recommend Ocarina of Time 3D, though I assume you’ve played the original already. The improvements are pretty good, too. I just got Cave Story 3D today (never got the original one). SM3DL is up on Sunday and Need for Speed the Run (the 3DS version also has autolog and 8 player off/online racing) and Ace Combat are up on Tuesday. I’m still debating over Shinobi. Nano Assault is a must for me, and it has one of the best graphics on the system if that’s your thing. I’m not sure on Sonic Generations yet.

You could also try Freaky Forms: Your Creations, Alive! It’s Nintendo’s first 3DSware game and is really cool. It has limited options at first, but you unlock them over time and the creation tool is pretty robust. You should give it a try.

      2. One thing that amazes me is that there is still people that think the 3DS is a DS with 3D. And this is the people that already own a DS, so they see no point on buying a new one. And I’d say that’s a marketing failure and one of the main reasons of the fail at launch, besides the eviden lack of game.

      3. They were comparing the total sales of the 3DS and the DS?! Seriously! The DS has been out for 7 years while the 3DS hasn’t even been out for a year. I guess people will look for any reason to hate on Nintendo or laugh at them.

  4. Imagine if it was successful at launch, then the price wouldn’t have droped as quick, then not as many units wold have sold.

  5. Nintendo = DOOMED

Reports came in from last week saying Sony lost 1.2 Billion $ in the same time as Nintendo.

    Sony = DOOMED

Microsoft is going to make Windblows 8 and 8 = unlucky number. So the 8th operating system is doomed… and Microsoft will lose $$$ and become doomed

    Microsoft= DOOMED

    1. HOWever…. Nintendo is losing money from every 3DS sold!!

Nintnedo still has to pay for putting the game on sale and creating it.

      Just sayin :/

  8. Now that they’ve got more on the table to offer, people are more likely to buy the system. The games they had out were so scarce it wasn’t even funny. I mean, yes, you’ve got Nintendogs, a big name, and …. Pilotwings Resort? I can’t say I had heard of it before the 3DS game, and the controls frustrated me so bad I didn’t even play for more than a minute. Besides that, all there was to get were third-party titles, which were better than the Nintendo titles. There should’ve been a big title to launch it with, whether it was Zelda or Mario, either would’ve probably sold the system a lot better than Nintendogs and Pilotwings.

The system, whether used in 3D or not, is wonderful. There are still some flaws with things like StreetPass, but overall, the system is a great successor to the DS line, and I’m glad that it’s doing better! Better sales of the system means better titles from third-party developers! They’ll actually WANT to work on 3DS titles!

    1. A lot of sites are saying that the 3D is better in the Nintendo titles than the 3rd party titles and I agree with them. I have Nintendogs+cats, LoZ OoT 3D, and Splinter Cell 3D and the 3D works perfectly for the Nintendo titles and Splinter Cell, you’ll forget that you have the 3D on!

  9. I admit, I did hold off buying a unit until the price came down and Toys R Us was running an awesome sale. I’m very happy with my purchase and have found it to be a great system! I do highly recommend a pair of game grip thingies (Amazon has them for about 10 bucks) to make holding the unit more comfy for longer periods of time. After trading in my DSiXL for a 100 dollar credit the system only cost me about 50 bucks. If you’ve been on the fence, consider giving the 3DS a try =)
