Miyamoto Says Nintendo Developers Haven’t Made An Exceptional Job Utilizing 3D Yet

In an interview with Mercury News legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained to the publication that he doesn’t believe developers at Nintendo have done a exceptional job utilizing 3D at this precise moment in time. Miyamoto believes they did a good job with Super Mario 3D Land but there’s much more room for them to improve.

When it comes to the 3D effect itself — or the surprise factor for people to be able to say, “Wow, this 3D!” — I think the mission has already been completed sufficiently. But when it comes to how the 3D effect can be used for the sake of the game play without distracting people’s attention too much, I do not think that developers have done a sufficient job yet. Even with “Super Mario 3DLand,” I think we were able to attain just about 50 percent of the entire goal we really have to achieve. So there’s much more room for us to be able to improve.

      1. Though this was certainly a game that warrants more in the future. I wouldn’t say next year, no, but they should work on a sequel.

      1. Aww poor zackchimps19…saying that the top comment is true even though you have probably never even played SM3DL…I understand you’re probably angry with Nintendo related articles/news due to the Vita’s poor sales compared to the 3DS. Don’t worry though, have strength. You will eventually make it through this. As you probably did through the DS vs PSP era. Lololol!

    1. That would be amazing for us LoZ fans, but think of all the Sony/PC gamers that will say that Nintendo lives off of remakes like they did with OoT 3D. Then we’d say that’s if it’s a truly amazing game, it’s worth a remake like OoT 3D. Then, they’ll go “We don’t make remakes.” Then we’ll say “How about CoD?” Then they’d say “That’s not a 1st party/exclusive game, nor is it a remake.” Then we’d say “Well they are remakes since there’s no difference between the new one and the one before that except the “new” weapons. And also Sony exclusive games aren’t worth remakes.” Then they’d say “They not remakes if there’re new weapons.” Then we’d say “Yeah, ‘new’ weapons.” Finally, it’s one big mess of trolling just like it’s always been since the first year Sony made a game console… Seriously though, I like the remakes because of the amazing new perspectives with the 3D on (especially Link’s first-person-view)!

      1. Fail Zelda is the same frikin (somewhat good) shit for over 25 years!
So is mario. Same concept over and over again.

        1. They maybe the same concept but the story lines are very clever. But, I do agree that Super Mario Bros. series is sadly the same concept (weird since I’m a Mario fan). The Mario games that are actually amazing is Super Mario 64, Sunshine, SMG 1 and 2.

  1. Keep on keeping on, Nintendo. You’ll probably have some darn good 3D at the end of next year now that you’ve acknowledged that improvements can be made!

    1. The only thing with that is it would really hurt the children too young to use 3d, and people unable to see 3d. If ths game wasn’t playable in 2d, this would really become an issue.

  3. ok this is an idea for a game : a ball jumping on cubes with puzzle and lazers with monster for enemies and then earthquakes are the goal cause you’ll need TO FIND HOLES TO PUT YOUR BALL IN (yeah i realy said that) in 3d graphics with 3d effect and… FOR WII U HD GRAPHICS!!!… yeah i know… useless

  4. Developers are always lazzy, at least the ones outside of Nintendo. Think of Nintendo Wiimote, the only games that push the boundaries of the possibilities of the controller was developed by nintendo or Second Partys, the other ones, are just ports of other consoles with pointing features no more (Where is the experience of phishing in zelda, or throw the grapple beam in Metroid Prime Corruption?)…

  5. I really couldn’t care less as long as the overall game is good. 3D is still a gimmick in my except in some cases. The notion of Zelda 3DS making 3D meaning something *has* caught my attention though.

  6. to me with the 3d off you see way too much jagged edges,i say its way more stunning thewith 3d on,im not a graphics whore,im just saying,i just want paper mario and my (i know its a little gay looking) animal crossing,im excited for those games

  7. Well, they certainly haven’t done a bad job either. If they can still work to make it better, then so be it. We are the ones who win on that aspect.

  8. well if they say 3D is a gimmick….then might i say that HD is a gimmick too…if u base on people reasoning that u can play the game without 3D…well can you not play a game if its standard def and not HD…samething 3d and HD are all “eye candy”…nuff said..

    1. Actually HD is even more gimmick since it doesn’t really affect gameplay at all. 3D on the other hand can, for instance, be used for judging distance, thus adding to the gameplay.

      1. ya for 1 or 2 jumps in mario 3d land but in games like tales of the abyss and (guessing here) animal crossing, the 3D isn’t up to anything at all… and is useless

        1. think pilot wings resort, seriously, that game is HARD (get all 3 stars, get all balloons etc..) the stages are easier with 3D

  9. Why can’t Sony ever put out an article about where there’s room for improvement or something they feel they didn’t do well enough on? They’re too prideful. They can’t even apologize for messed up Vitas and they won’t even go far enough to give their thoughts on the Vita’s flopping in Japan.

I’d say that 3d is pretty damn good right now considering how new it is. but if miyamoto says sm3dl is “50%” then i cant wait til its 100! sm3dl did a good job showing off the 3ds’s muscles and was just long enough to leave me wanting more.

  12. 3D is useless in gaming… thats why my battery lfe on my 3DS is so long compared to people who use 3D… i use it for 30 seconds to see what it looks lke in 3D like the mystic artes in tales of the abyss… but other than that it’s off for weeks at a time.

  13. Personally, I like the 3D but I usually keep it at about half way. I think it doesn’t add too much to gaming (aside from augmented reality) but it has the potential. In 3 or 4 years the other gaming giants will come up with something similar. Like the playstation move and kinect were worse or better than wii.

  14. I think that every Nintendo games did the 3D incredibly well.
OoT:3D was really really cool seeing the depth in Hyrule. I though that it was doen really well.
SM3DL was even better. I thought that the 3D was so natural! I once had the 3D on, but thought is was off because it was done so well….. Okay, that sounded weird but, in short: it was really good.

3rd party games have been able to do the 3D effect OK and I normally play them with the 3D off.

  15. Hes verys humbles man.me loves this gye.he god to me.ands I worships at the church of Nintendos.me hopes more goods game on 3ds.lyke a game of the princess peach 1 forms ds.

  16. In all fairness, the 3DS hasn’t been out a full year yet, so Miyamoto and the rest of Nintendo have plenty of time to take full advantage of the 3D effects as well as the graphics engine. If Capcom can make something as beautiful looking as Resident Evil: Revelations on the 3DS, Nintendo can definitely step up their game too. Personally, I expect the next Legend of Zelda game on the 3DS to have graphics on par with Twilight Princess with better lighting effects and 3D obviously.

  17. If he says Nintendo developers are n’t making exceptional games, he should look at the 3rd parties! Most of their 3D doesn’t pop out to me as much as OoT 3D and SM3DL! If any of you have Splinter Cell 3D, you would know what I’m talking about, though it’s a great game IMO, it just does not have noticeable 3D.
