Forbes: Sony, Microsoft And Nintendo Tie For Last Place At E3

Forbes genuinely believes that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all tie for last place at a rather underwhelming E3 event. The publication says that Sony may have had the “least worst” conference out of the big three, but ultimately all three under-delivered. What did you think of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo’s press conferences?

    1. Although all have dissapointed until now, perhaps Nintendo will make it up tomorrow with the 3ds (being the only one who didn’t dissapoint the most I think)

      1. Those were indeed not so WOWish conferences, they were decent and, of course, the best for us was Nintendo’s conference. Ubisoft was great too. This was a decent E3 but there have been much better conferences in the past. As you say, I hope the 3DS conference it’s better today. I can’t wait to see new amazing titles (like Castlevania) appear on stage =)

    2. Yeah, with the Wii U I was hoping for a surprise announcement(Zelda kept going through my head). And don’t get me started on the order of the whole thing.

      1. Look, it’s just the truth- if they don’t have products that they’re ready to show, they won’t just throw it out there. So some big titles should be expected soon enough, and probably some before the Wii U is even released

      1. True, but was that enough? ZombiU was the only COMPLETELY new title that I liked. Ubisoft killed this e3 btw.

  1. I felt Sony did the worst because they showed all games we knew about and the Wonderbook looks really lame. It also wasn’t responding to the player’s actions at one time during the demo of the Spell Book too.

    1. Nintendo > Microsoft > Sony
Nintendo had the most games. I mean it was a little disappointing seeing how 2 of them were NSMB Games. Pikmin 3 looked absolutely amazing, and NSMB 2 looked good. NSMB U looks like rehash to the max. There will be more games coming out tomorrow.

      1. What the fuck? That order is wrong.

        Nintendo=Sony>Microsoft

We only saw games we knew about at Nintendo AND Sony, both had some new games but spent too much time on bullshit (Sony, Wonderbook; Nintendo, Wii fit U). Microsoft was just fucking terrible, Just Dance 4 was the highlight…

          1. Me too, but see it this way: they showed Halo 4 upfront and ended the show with CoD BLOPS II. And they did show a lot more footage/gameplay from 3rd party games (Tomb Raider, Splinter Cell) than their own franchises. Speaking of that, they did show new games from their 4 big franchises (Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable) but we didn’t see much of the two which are not direct sequels (Fable: the Journey and Forza Horizon). Gears is understandable as it’s far ahead, but all the other 3 are coming this year.

All in all, it seemed like Microsoft isn’t sure their own IPs are the stars of the show anymore. Say what you will about Sony, complain all you want about Wonderbook (which obviously is for another audience), but they DID start and end their show with exclusive IPs – and most importantly, NEW ONES AT THAT. For that reason alone, Sony was LIGHT YEARS ahead of Microsoft in 2012.

Nintendo is its own thing, I don’t even bother to compare it with the rest anymore (for good or worse).

            1. I have to be honest, Sony really did slightly better than Nintendo in my eyes. I was kinda hoping to learn more about the wii U console rather than games. Seriously? Nintendo Land? Can’t I just have Wii Sports U or something? Batman and ZombieU looked cool though. It’s just getting hard for me to get excited about ANOTHER Mario game. I like Mario and all but I’d prefer a Galaxy game than the 2D side scroller classic. However it is a new console so I totally understand the cheesy games that get you used to the system as well as the lack of super exciting titles.

Sony I have to say did better than I expected (although I was hoping they would rush Wonderbook offstage. Yes it is for a different audience). I am
More than excited for Beyond: Two Souls, and The Last of Us. Also, Far Cry 3 looked impressive. I was impressed with Sony’s lineup of games (even if we knew about some already). Sony is really taking advantage of what they have and they’re making creative games that will be very fun and interesting! Both of the companies were, needless to say, better than Microsoft. Although I have to admit that I love Halo and I can’t wait for Halo 4. I am looking forward to everything each company has in store for us in the next year!

  2. Sony was more like begging us to buy stuff..
Microsoft, I cant even remember what they showed, it was THAT interesting..
Nintendo was very disappointing of proving us, WHY we should buy wii U, without AAA third party games (far cry 3, medal of honor, elder scrolls, watch dogs, splinter cell, etc).. And what about the specs!! Why Nintendo always have this taboo, they know that the first day of release, many will make reviews and tell us, what is inside after all.. ! If its near or on par with the current, I am not buying, there is no point! But it does have tessellation!

        1. Playing games better. More functionality. Games are getting complex to the point where it’s affecting gampley a lot of times (frequent trips to various menus and such, for starters). The point is to make it more seamless, and more immersive. Not just about graphics.

If all you care about is how powerful it is, go get a PC with a high-powered graphics card. If you care about HOW games are played, as well ad better-than-current-gen graphics, get a Wii U.

          1. Just having in-game maps is amazing. I’m thrilled that the other systems cause an annoying pause when you enter the map, but Wii U will not even make you stop the game. It’s like how Skyward Sword introduced in-game inventory (also a noticeable addition to presented Wii U games), but they’re improving on other systems

          2. “not just about graphics”
Why do people keep saying that? NO ONE this generation says it is *all* about graphics – even with games like Crysis, Battlefield 3, and Total War Shogun 2, games that the developers put a lot of effort into graphically, are not just about the graphics.

    1. We the gamers, look forwrd to escape from the current console jail in game tech!!! Now if nintendo decided to give us an upgraded version of the current consoles, they have to sell it in a very low price!!!!!! I didnt see games that makes u consider it as a next gen console. I didnt see any games except the ones that already being announced one year ago.

    2. They have released specs. And I’m pretty sure the makers of Skyrim said they might make a version on Wii U. It easily has better specs than PS3 and Xbox360, but definitely not enough to be able to beat whatever Sony and Microsoft’s next consoles will be.

      1. I didn’t see the actual specs for the CPU and GPU, where are they? They did say the CPU is IBM-based and GPU is Radeon-based, but that doesn’t really mean anything without clock speeds, RAM memory numbers et al.

        1. The Nintendo site has a lot of that information.
I’m just not jumping up to say anything about the other next-gen. For one, neither was mentioned, and so Wii U is the most powerful for a full year.

  3. Ubisoft saved the WiiU, had their games been in nintendos conference, Nintendo will have still dissapointed, but they would have won. WiiU is looking great however, even if I’m not seeing the classic IPs I want. ZombiU was the best surprise.

    1. Mass Effect 3 for me, but it would be better if Nintendo announced at least 2 of their major franchises along with some new IP’s.

  4. thekidnintendowiiman

    Nintendo – Pikmin 3
Sony – The Last Of Us
    Microsoft – Halo 4
That’s basically all the good games they had that was worth showing.

      1. Well, there technically are three exclusive (not sure about this either) titles for the 360, but they were barely mentioned. One of them was called Matter or something, and the other was Lococycle. I don’t remember the third one.

  5. microsoft forgot they were there for videogames for awhile and then just spouted off FPS games. last last place

sony made virtually no effort to actually help their dying handheld, with another assassin’s creed and call of duty. then they showcase a blatant copy/paste of super smash bros. (and they admitted it in the tags on their vid on youtube so you can’t fanboy rage on me ;) umad?). and then they come out with books as games using an eyetoy? i’ve never seen something so boring that involved JK rowling. last place

nintendo started off great and it went downhill over time. if they showcased games in reverse order, people would’ve left feeling better about it but instead they ended on nintendoland and that just left a bad taste in people’s mouths. despite that, there were actually good games there and this holiday season is bound to be a good one for nintendo. first last place

  6. Nintendo and Sony were pretty much on par because they both had 1 game that looked great (Pikmin 3/Last of Us) and Microsoft just sucked in general.

  7. I also remember EA last year, they gave an entirely hour of interview, how good wii U is, how good the sport games will look like, how good the shooters will look like.. but they snicked away from it this year, NOT EVEN the casual fifa for it! that many people buy fifa for their friends (I dont like sport games, except rally if they are good).

  8. EA was just boring sports crap. I mean really “Guys! Just announced! Madden NFL 13! What a huge surprise!”
    I seriously didn’t like EA’s presentation.

  9. Guys……Sickr…..be honest with yourself.

That conference was fucking horrible. I know it, you know it, WE ALL KNOW it.

I can understand Microsoft and Nintendo, but Why Sony? They did great!

    1. I felt like, that they transferred their economical problems into the show, by offering free things, free games, just to go buy the consoles.. attractions.. It gave me the idea, that sony begged us to buy stuff.. But I did liked a couple of games they presented.

      1. For the love of god.

Are we really getting to the point where we get to COMPLAIN about FREE STUFF? If getting TWELVE free games is not a good reason to buy a plan that costs the same as ONE new game, not to mention MORE free stuff in the next ELEVEN MONTHS, what. the. heck. is? Are we really so hellbent on being ‘against the system’ that we want companies to NOT give us games when we buy consoles???

Seriously, who let this guy out of the basement?

        1. It speaks of desperation. It’s like they don’t even care what they’re giving away, they’re just giving it to us like a master would throw scraps to dogs.

    2. It would be greater for Sony if they didn’t sign a deal with the author of Harry Potter. Bloody hell, JK!!!!!!

      1. Why? so many POTter heads are already clamoring for it…

But really I think it’s stupid and mostly everyone does, but Harry potter fans…. Dear god. One girl I know who doesn’t game went and got a ps3 today.

It’s rediculous but hey. There is a fan base for anything I guess.

    3. i’ll tell you why sony. 3 simple reasons:

1)waving a wand around a book in front of an eyetoy makes the act of watching paint dry look like an excitement for the ages

2)series who get a new game once a year (in the same genre, mind you) are not worthy of praise, especially at E3

3)the vita is in need of games that aren’t ports or games from my second point. it got ONE announced. and that was just because of sony playing Follow the Leader with nintendo

  10. Nintendo’s E3 presentation was certainly not as good as others they’ve had. I’d still say it was the best one at E3 though. Such a shame, it started so well but then there was that dumb singing game happened.

  11. I think Ubisoft was the best, then EA, Nintendo, sony, and then microsoft. My reasons are way to long so i’ll just post the conclusion… :)

  12. Microsoft was boring. To me they came last while Sony and nintendo tied and ubisoft won the whole thing

    1. yeah who expected them to win this E3? i mean, they always sucked ass everytime they show up in previous E3 conferences, but this time they won this one o.0

  13. Nintendo>/=Sony>Microsoft.
Nintendo showed off games albeit game we knew about.
Sony gave us two gorgeous games (Beyond/Last of Us).
Microsoft had Halo 4. That was it.

  14. just like some analyst said. e3 this year was going to blow and he or she was right. I hope the big three get their act together for 2013’s e3, especially poor microsoft.

  15. It’s because 95% of all the stuff shown so far has already been announced and known about…..

      1. half were revealed from the source, or last years e3… According to Gametrailer’s Poll: 31% wanted Metroid, 27% wanted Zelda, 25% wanted Smash Bros., then there was some other stuff, then Mario, Wave race and Pikmin shared the remaining 21%… So where were the big 3 to get us excited to buy the console?

  16. All three definitely under-delivered. :( I was expecting much more from Sony and Nintendo. I couldn’t care less about Microsoff. imho, Ubisoft won E3 with their varied, solid, silly conference. That Rayman WiiU demo was great :)

  17. I’m about to say something I never thought I would say. *grunts* Looks like Michael Pachter was right *breathes heavily*. E3 this year wasn’t exciting, except for seeing actual games running on Wii U hardware.

Frankly a lot the excitement happened before E3 even began. Nintendo direct stole the show and I got a lot more info about the Wii U’s games by going to Nintendo’s E3 website than I did during the show. Leave luck to heaven.

      1. Nintendo gave us the Impression we’d see Smash Bros., We all still expected some Metroid 25th Anniversary celebration, and not a hint of Zelda was in the air, either for 3DS nor WiiU… On top of that Nintendo said they are going to focus on Core titles… yet 17 of the 66 minutes were Core titles… that’s hardly a quarter; Have Nintendo learned nothing?

    1. I was thinking the same thing. Patcher’s words were swirling in my head the entire time. Still, I’m glad we saw games actually running the Wii U with some tech demos.

  18. this is what happens when they pretty much tell everyone everything that they are planning to show before e3. but still, i loved seeing gameplay for halo 4 and pikmin 3. the last of us seemed pretty good too.

  19. They were all weak. But Nintendo has lots of E3 events, so they have a good excuse. Don’t know of any reason Sony and MIcrosoft were so boring…

  20. I was pissed at what Nintendo showed us today. My blood was boiling since we wanted classic Nintendo things, and we got nothing except Pikmin. Now that my anger is gone and I am calmer, I’m starting to see a different side to things. Impressions on ZombiU from the show floor seem to be positive. I am excited for that game. Pikmin looks great for a Wii upport. Also, I just noticed something interesting. I’m wondering if Nintendo wanted to get the general public’s attention. They advertised this a lot on facebook and stuff, and we got some interesting rumors that did not manifest on their conference. For example, Splinter Cell Blacklist was rumored before E3, and the rumors were about a Wii U version as well. There were other rumors for Wii U games, but once again, it seems Nintendo is holding back onto those for some reason.

Apparently they’re going to have another conference later on to announce the price, so maybe they’ll show more? I can think more calmly right now. We’ll have to wait and see.

    1. Welcome back. After the dust settles we all start to see things clearly. The conference was bad, that is a fact. But, I was still impressed with the Wii U. Finally we have official info on the hardware. And some good games are coming to the U. My interest hasn’t waned at all. Nintendo will show us their big AAA titles when they’re ready to be shown.

  21. Too much hype before E3 mans E3 will be dull. Not much hype means E3 will be a huge surprise. I expect big games next year!

    1. why expect something big next year? the Wii U is coming this year… and if they want us to buy it at launch, where’s something to sink our teeth into?

  22. I have to say that Sony and Nintendo Tied this one with Microsoft being… what…
    Anyways Ubisoft won.

  23. I wasn’t impressed with what Nintendo had to offer. I thought it was a bad idea to focus so much on Wii Fit U and SiNG, and Just Dance 4. Those are all casual games. People paying attention to E3 aren’t casual gamers. So maybe they should have spent more time focusing a bit more on Nintendo Land? Especially since it supposedly shows off what the Wii U can do so well.

But we weren’t really told anything we didn’t already know. Game wise. Yeah, we learned more about some things, but we knew about them beforehand. New Super Mario Bros. 2, Luigi’s Mansion, and Paper Mario are in the works. We knew that. I was expecting a major game announcement or two. A new Zelda and/or Metriod game for the the 3DS? Even if it’d be out in a year, some artwork and a title would be nice. Maybe a screenshot? But there wasn’t any of that.

    1. I was thinking the same thing. Why announce somthing at the BIGGEST conference of the year when it was already announced?

  24. Ok there was a decent amount of games I’m interested in… Assassins creed 3, far cry 3, god of war, the last of us, the new fighting game from the makers of mortal kombat not sure what it’s called, pikmin 3, nsmbu, tomb raider, Cod black ops 2, the castlevania for 3ds looked like some side scrolling goodness and there was probably some I missed but this year just didn’t have the excitement it had in previous years. Oh well hopefully the 3ds conference excites me.

  25. I don’t like Ubisoft must as i like NINTENDO but of all that I saw Ubisoft was the best. Nintendo Let me down and mycrosoft didnt amuzeme and Sony o well boring.

  26. my order for e3 this year
Ubisoft > Nintendo > Sony (almost equal with nintendo but they had an extra 30 minutes to amaze us and failed) > microsoft (yawn) > EA (that was awful!)

    1. Everyone says Ubisoft was the best…and it truely was. I agree with you here. Nintendo’s was better than Sony, but Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft all SUCKED at E3 this year!!!

  27. I think they can’t be more right. I didn’t watch Sony’s or Microsoft’s conferences, but Nintendo’s was truly awful.

  28. I was there at the Nintendo Conference and I felt they were missing something big. I believe they should have focused on the console more, have had a release date and price, and focus on what it’s capable of. Then, they should have shown Pikmin 3 and the hardcore games. New Super Mario Bros U looks too familiar. They should have refrained from showing the casual games and just showed those online. We needed something to blow the roof off the place at the end of the presentation, but it just ended abruptly.

    1. Especially after Nintendo said they focus on the core gamers, yet not even a quarter of the time they had was spent on core titles…? has Nintendo learned nothing?

      1. at least there are a bunch of third party titles to look up for while we wait for nintendo to announce some of their classic franchises. Examples??
Mass effect 3, ZombieU, Assasin’s creed 3, Batman Arkham city: Armored Edition, Tekken, Aliens and so on….

  29. In my opinion:

Microsoft: The same conference year after year
Sony: Pretty good, but the Wondernook part was too long
Nintendo: Not bad, the boring parts weren’t too long, but if they show everything in a different order, better (NintendoLand first and Pikmin 3 at the end for example)

  30. I’d say Ubisoft easily had the best E3, with Sony having the best E3 between the Big Three, and with Nintendo at a respectable 3rd place w/ Microsoft at a distant last place. *Sigh* I guess I got all excited for no reason w/ this E3

  31. Microsoft sucked, hands down. Sony did alright, but as for Nintendo… to be fair I wasn’t awake to see their show. I can’t imagine it did any worse than either, but I heard it didn’t do *as well* as Sony. Either way, I still think Sony and Nintendo were on par, but Microsoft? Psshhh.

  32. all_amERICan_gamer

I don’t know what the fuck forbes is looking at! This year was awesome! You don’t ALWAYS need new hardware to make an E3 interesting, in my opinion.

  33. I got my hopes too high for first-party games and new IPs. I think that they should’ve had less ports on the Wii U and more exclusives or at the very least, less casual software. Plus, Isn’t Nintendo halfway done with what they have to offer? They’re going to focus on the 3DS tommorow.

    1. I have to agree. Ubisoft had the best E3 show out of all the E3’s ive seen….and it isnt even a “big three.” LOL!!! Ubisoft did a better job at showing it’s Nintendo titles than Nintendo did showing their own!!! Which is sad because I love Nintendo.

      1. I mean, I don’t know if it’s because Nintendo only had an hour to do everything or because they just didn’t focus on driving home the ‘hardcore, casual and core gamer’ idea. That’s the main premise of the Wii U: one console catering to everyone.

  34. Well, I just finished reading a live blog of the roundtable. Not only did it start late, it was also extremely redundant. I can’t believe I now have to place all of my fucking hopes into the 3DS showcase tomorrow, which, even if it were good, would still not validate the Wii U’s presentation today. Good lord. Alright, either Metroid Dread or LttP-related game or another Zelda game for the 3DS will be good enough tomorrow. Like I said before, just a mere mention is fine. I’m starting to get the feeling that Nintendo doesn’t want to show their core titles at E3 anymore, for whatever reason.

  35. I have to agree. I did enjoy Sony’s, I felt like they were able to prove there was life left in the PS3. The Microsoft one was a disaster, I was sad to see that they managed to show Tomb Raider and South Park (though Matt and Trey did make fun of the SmartGlass thing).

The biggest let down for Nintendo was the lack of 3DS titles. They showed so many Wii U titles, but neglected the Wii U itself. We still don’t know how it runs, what it’ll do besides gaming and video services. They didn’t even give a price point or release date, which is what I was expecting the most. I did enjoy the Pikmin 3 part, that was definitely a shining moment for them. But those fake family videos at the end just felt too … well, fake. Nobody acts like that, the children didn’t even really play the games much, and they expect me to believe dad is gonna hog the Wii U? No, those kids would throw a flippin’ tantrum!

    1. They are showing 3DS titles tomorrow. U can see plenty of them at Nintendo’s “2nd” E3 presentation dedicated to it’s handheld. Also they said they would discuss the Wii U indepth at their “Round Table” conference thingy. So…the real let down wasnt the two things mentioned above it was the fact that there is still no major nintendo games coming out at launch for Wii U. I’m sick of Mario! I want Zelda back and Star Fox and Metroid!!! and SUPER SMASH!

  36. I was utterly disappointed…though the Wii U looks awesome I was excited for E3. I was hoping for a Super SMash Bros. Universe Trailer. A new Star Fox announcement, Metroid, Pikmin(which we got and thats it), Pokemon Battle Revolution 2(thats a bit farfetched), or ZELDA!!! but we really didnt get much. I saw a ton of crap that I already knew from watching Ubisoft’s E3 announcements….like seriously it isnt exciting to see the same Assasin’s Creed trailer. I get it, its coming out for Wii U “biggg dealll” GIMME SOME SUPER SMASH!!!

    1. Well to be fair, that’s a bit unrealistic. SSB has only been in development for a whopping two months, we literally just got Skyward Sword (It takes about 4-5 years before we get another mainstream Zelda game), Both Metroid other M and PBR were received terribly so it will take a while for Nintendo to gain the confidence to do another of those titles. I was however, hoping for an F-zero and Star Fox announcement, those series need more love

      1. ^ THIS. Sorry Andrew, but it’s true. Zelda launched end of year 2011. There won’t be much news on a console Zelda for sometime. I mean, there are 2 Zelda teams (one for handhelds and another for console) so the next Zelda game we see may be on 3DS.

  37. This was a fucking terrible E3. However, if I did have to choose the order, Nintendo would be slightly above sony and really far above Microsoft. Nintendo because the majority of the conference was about FUCKING GAMES, Sony came a little after Ninty because the Blunderbook (which is a terrible idea) took a lot of the conference’s time, but they did show some games I wanted to play. Microsoft showed two games I wanted to play. Of the entire conference, only two (Halo and South Park). The rest of it was talking about Multimedia shit

    1. Honey, this is a trade show. Multimedia, entices casual customers and makes investors happy. This isn’t a show to keep little Timmy from getting upset.

    1. finally a non hater.

Nintendo didnt do their best but I know wil U will be insanely popular to both core and casuals. Look at Wii… only zelda was the only game. Then the wii exploded a yr after with Galaxy smash bros etc.

Ah well am getting 4 wii u games for xmas… ILL BE SO LUCKY to even get half of that from my family and gf… ungrateful spoilt kids asking for smash bros and zelda so soon ROFL

  38. In my opinion, Microsoft definitely won E3. Nintendo really tried hard but it’s obvious they have failed to do anything new when it comes to software. However, I dread to speak of Sony, they were appalling. Sony really had no killer software and anything they did show, was either too obscure to really assure investors or for technology that has already failed and either needs rebooting or forgetting. Ahem, Vita. Ahem, Move. Ahem, PlayStation Suite.
However, Microsoft were almost perfect. They didn’t forget Kinect but they didn’t go on about it either. Also, they had a great balance of media features, interconetivity and great new software.
Sorry Nintendo, I’m off to buy an Xbox 360. </3

  39. Anybody complaining about not seeing StarFox or Zelda OR that they don’t have anything to play on Wii should get Metroid Prime Trilogy (maybe on eBay or Amazon). I don’t know about you guys but I still have a TON of Wii games to get through, plus my own life. Fire Emblem, Kirby’s Epic Yarn and Return to Dreamland, Donkey Kong Country Returns & Jungle Beat, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punchout, Xenoblade, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Xenoblade, Rhythm Heaven, Wario Land: Shake It!, Metroid: Other M and lastly Skyward Sword. I can easily wait a year for the Wii U.

  40. This might be the first time I haven’t been excited to buy a new Nintendo console at release.

I think everyone was disappointed by E3 as a whole. Even Nintendo (who dropped the ball big time but still won IMO) didn’t make a good case for Wii U. The more they hide the hardware specs, the more I suspect that it’s completely underwhelming. The dual GamePad news was definitely a relief, though. And the “pro” controller was nice, despite that it’s Nintendo’s most obvious shameless ripoff in recent memory.

Part of the philosophy that Nintendo fans adopt is that hardware doesn’t make a good game. But if Nintendo keeps playing power catch-up, this whole “hey look how much third party support we have now” thing isn’t going to last five years. The Wii U will sell steadily until the XBox720 comes out, and that’s IF Nintendo convinces everyone it’s a new console and not an add-on. After that, Wii U will look like a Gamecube. But hopefully that won’t be the case.

I think some rebranding would have been good. Maybe a grey background with the Wii U logo in white and blue. Just to tell people it’s something new.
