Pokemon Black & White 2 Sell Over One Million Units In Two Days

Last week, Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 were released in Japan and, according to Famitsu, 1.69 million units were sold on the 23rd and 24th of June. Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 are Nintendo DS games but can be played on any Nintendo 3DS console, including the forthcoming Nintendo 3DS XL. The games will be released in Europe and North America this year.

      1. They’re both good games, and just like COD, because so many are released, they are growing stale. If you say that the improvements in Pokemon are great enough to warrant a new game, but don’t think the same for COD, you’re just lying to yourself.

        1. “the improvements in Pokemon are great enough to warrant a new game, but don’t think the same for COD”
Exactly. You can call B2/W2 new games, but not CoDBlack Ops 2. Black Ops 2 is exactly the same.

          1. To a non-Pokemon player, all the Pokemon games look the same.

To a non-CoD player, all the CoD games look the same.

        2. Ah, the voice of reason!
I will not be buying Black and White 2. I skipped Gen IV because I never bought a DS, but invested in Black version after hearing that it had “revitalized” the Pokemon franchise. I was sorely disappointed to find out that literally nothing but camera placement and a couple battle modes were different. I was so bored after a few days that I stopped playing before I hit the 5th gym leader.

I went back and beat the game to see if anything remarkable was lurking in the final act. Spoiler alert: nothing was. It was the same game I had played my entire childhood with little more than a fresh coat of paint. The comparisons between Pokemon and Call of Duty are completely reasonable: both franchises sell exceptionally well in spite of changing very little.

          1. Because pokemon is geared towards children, so there will always new gamers, children that are totally new to it that will play it. Don’t blame the game if you grown up! Don’t ask the game to evolve conforming to your taste. It’s a sin to the children.

          2. I didnt have the same feeling. Ive played all the pokemon games, but i didnt get that same feeling i did with blue until black. Its because ALL of it pokemon are new, theres no, “oh im getting all old gen pokemon”, i went in blind, not knowing any, and i loved that

          3. thats what i call “having a REALLY bad taste” and “not pleased with anything”. pokemon black/white are masterpieces

            1. Not really… I didn’t enjoy the games because they do little to distinguish themselves. Gen II and Gen III upped the ante with more cinematic, story-driven experiences where legendaries did more than sit in a cave or on a tower. I can’t speak for Gen IV, like I said earlier, but Gen V just feels too similar. I’m not saying they’re poorly-made — quite the opposite. My point is that, regardless of the number of new monsters, the game failed to enchant.

        3. CoD gets a game every year, Pokemon doesn’t -__- and even though there were Two pokemons released this year, they’re both very different and fresh not the same game but with different maps -_-

      2. Not really, it just rehashes itself to hell and back and the sheep will always gobble it up. There are far, far better JRPGs no matter how much you want to blind yourself into thinking otherwise. :P

        1. I think the main word in there was JRPG. Most of those dont even get out of japan releases, because the market ( typically America), want more shovelware FPS games.

    1. COD hasn’t changed anything, they add a few new guns, look pretty much the same and warrant around 12 hours gameplay and 100s of hours online gameplay if you’re a COD tool. I racked up 400 hours on emerald version alone and an average 150 on the others, and I still haven’t done everything you can, Pokemon evolves its graphics with every release, releases new designs, new features with every game. Far better than COD and it always will be. Once COD sticks around for almost 20 years with a succesful franchise, than you can say its something.

        1. Dude, he just gave a few reasons about why he believes Pokemon is better than Call of Duty. You simply argue against everyone who supports a game by Nintendo. You aren’t a gamer, just a criticizing fool.

          1. giving blank reasons and not actually explaining any of them is not reasoning.

same goes for believing guns are the only thing cod has added. but you’re probably that kind of an idiot to agree with him.

    2. well, Pokemon has changed more than COD itself. The reason people are tired of COD is because not only does it release every other year, but it’s almost the exact same as any other shooter in the market. There aren’t many pokemon clones on the market, and the game itself is simple and fun.

    1. B/W 2 look fucking awesome, you can fight GARY, as well as all the old champions, elite 4 and gym leaders

        1. I always knew him as Gary :p from the anime and that was his name i choose in the game. Seriously, what kind of a name is Blue? Haha

          1. Similar to all other characters until Ruby and Sapphire, they’re named after the games they were introduced in.

    2. To put this in perspective, Pokemon alone has almost outsold the entire ps vita library worldwide software sales just in 2 days in one country.

        1. Nah not being cruel, just some people are saying its a dying franchise, when even it still didn’t sell as well as a previous version, it still has managed to sell just as much as another handhelds combined worldwide software sales in just 2 days in just one country

    1. SHUT THE FUCK UP U FUCKING BASTARD,ASSHOLE,FUCK YOUR FUCKING FAKE USERNAMES AND U HAVE PISSED US ALL OFF! GO TO HELL AND NEVER RETURN.I AM THE ORGINAL 1 AND U ARE NOTHING BUT A FUCKING IDIOT!

  1. When the 3DS came out I bought Black/White for my launch games even though they weren’t 3DS games. Here we are again without a 3DS version of Pokèmon. When will we see a 3DS Pokèmon game?????

    1. Next-gen probably; they wanted to develop this for DS because it means more sales, because 3DS isn’t really fully established yet :)

    2. Gen 6, hoefully itll work in some way with the WiiU (im still hoping on idea of playing DS games using the WiiU, like the GBA player on the GC)

    3. well it happen to the original ds as well, it took 2-3 years after emerald to make it on ds so this is not different.

  2. How is pokemon any different than cod? Pokemon uses the same copy & paste gameplay mechanics. Pokemon 2 has same graphics, same gameplay mecanics, same pokemon but with map pack and fushion zomg it warents 40 buck new game

      1. POKEMON USES STRATEGY AND COORDINATION, IT USES SKILLS AND TACTICS, PLANNING AND TEAMWORK. CoD REQUIRES NOTHING, SHOOTING SKILL? GO TO THE MILITARY MAN IF YOU WANT IT. THEY HAVE THE SAME GAMEPLAY MECHANICS BUT IT ALL MATTERS HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED.

        1. COD is seriously lacking, Pokemon may have dipped in quality, but with Black and White it revitalised the franchise.

            1. And the whole point of Pokemon is the story, battles, catching Pokemon, battling it out online etc. Don’t criticize two completely different games, especially when the comparison is completely pointless.

              1. The comparison is quite valid when both series get large volumes of sales within little time without actually having a substantial evolution to neither IP.

                Fact.

  3. you forgot turn battle and now fight two trainers. Since this a new game new innovation is you fight 4 trainers zong who would have thought. Next will be 3d with GRAPHICS which arent important to us ninty fags so nope dint warrent a new game SAMETENDO

    1. Graphics aren’t important to a game past a certain point – although they’re nice. Also, who said a sequel had to bring a huge change to a game?

  4. If you walk with pokemon and you over the age of 16 in canada they would think you have a mentle problem for playing a kids simple rpg for new fags

  5. Well en mexico si you camina with el pokemon e tu eras 16 people pensar that you a big maricon mama boy puta bitch

    1. Congrats, you can use Google Translate. Pretending to be another person from another country won’t fool people if you try say Pokemon is for children.

    2. plus in Mexico console are expensive there and not a lot of people own one, if u got like a 3ds u are consider a rich person or a person from the north (whatever that means) so nice try fool.

  6. Merci bonjur if you are in france with pokemon ppl laugh at you for being weird like if you have some mental problem heck a cop took le guy to jail for questoning if he had pedophile tendancy sacrablo

  7. Pokemon is still one of the biggest guns in Nintendo’s arsenal, right along with Mario. Those series print money Leave luck to heaven.

      1. That’s why I don’t fear for the Wii U’s launch. With NSMBU and Just Dance 4 at launch, 2 of the biggest hits for the Wii, the audience for those games are waiting for the sequel. For the “hardcore” there’s AC3, Zombi U, Pikmin 3 and others.

Probably the best launch line-up of all time.

        1. The launch is incredible, its so diverse, theres about 7/8 games i want on launch, and theyre all different genres, its awesome, and only 2/3, depending if nintendoland is packaged, are first party titles.
Id rather have my Zelda/Metroid/Mario/Star Fox all come in the years after

          1. Smart man. You have to save something to counter the launches of the PS4 and 720. Check out this video. I =t gets good after he stops dancing. Stick with it.

            1. Saw one this guys videos before explaining why next gen is going to only be a small improvement in graphics

  8. I like how CoD is brought up in an article that doesn’t mention it anywhere. Anyway, I enjoy and play both the CoD and and Pokemon series, and I can honestly say stagnation comparisons aren’t too far-fetched. The thing is, both of the series have a huge, fun idea, and both are extremely polished. They’re just plain fun, and I don’t care how much you fanboys hate CoD, or FPS (supposedly there’s some written code saying Nintendo fans or just ‘core’ gamers in general can’t enjoy shooters), each title outsells the last for a reason. The reason being because the series is extremely polished and is riding on a great idea, just like Pokemon. Anyone hating on Pokemon or CoD just needs to shove it up their bungholes, because each is extremely popular and moves millions of units – and there’s nothing you whiny fanboys can do about that.

  9. Well yeah, its POKEMON. If it was a 3DS title, i wouldve bought a 3DS for it, sales wouldve gone through the roof

  10. Those of you wanting 3D Pokemon, look into Pokemon Rumble Blast/Super Pokemon Rumble. Its not quite the same but maybe it’ll stop you from whining as there is 3D. Also I don’t care if it’s the same idea that’s been redesigned. Pokemon games are generally good. Pokemon is a successful series, like Mario. No one has ever complained that every Mario game is just a remake of an old one with a new story, graphics, gameplay and different levels from the previous ones.

    1. “just a remake of an old one with a new story, graphics, gameplay and different levels from the previous ones”
^this clearly defines just about any sequel

  11. @Thedragon How old are you? Please explain the total number of innvated gimmicks to warrent this a full retail price as oppose to releasing an expansion via online for half price. *grabs popcorn* cant wait to hear this load of.. btw ninty fire same rounds

    1. It’s a sequel you idiot. Not all games need to have a metric tonne of gimmicks to be worth it. This is for those who want more of the Pokemon Black/White formula and don’t want to replay the same story multiple times.

    2. First of all, im 20 years old. Second, compared to Diamond/Pearl, Black and White has improved graphics, an improved battle system, including 3 way battles and a sort of tag team idea. All the pokemon are new, so youre going in blind, with no choice of choosing old pokemon, but this delivers the same experience that Blue and Red did, meaning you grow to like the pokemon more than previous gens. The story is much longer and complex, the version have multiple big differences that seperate them.
The online system is improved in both battle and trading. Theres alot more replay balue after completing the game, including cameo battles with previous big character from older version to serve fan service.

I believe you’ve just been fucking served, prick

    3. As for the sequel, its a sequel, something that hasnt happened in pokemon. It carries on the story from the first one, and somehow manages to improve on all the aspects i just listed above.
Also, learn to fucking spell and use correct grammar before even thinking of making a valid agruement

  12. @sam yup agree these morons are whining about 3d gimmick that utterly fails on 3ds unless your a white pale zombie…nevermind. No wonder ninty gets away with selling half baked ideas smh manchildren oh brother.

      1. Yeah, Vita’s lifetime software sales in Japan is about 1.1 million now. That doesn’t count digital sales, but still. Supposing it hit 2 million counting the digital ones, B/W2 will have outsold that by tonight.

        1. I believe 20% of all sales are digital. so I’m guessing 200,000 sales would account for digital sales. Correct me if I’m wrong.

    1. Uhm, this is software.

Pokemon BW, outsold the 3DS in the same span too. So I could easily use your stupid point against you.

But alas, the logic of someone with a Mii avatar…ohwait there is none.

      …LOL.

      1. Actually, I misread the start of that.

Pokemon is Nintendo’s CoD. Next to no changes and big sales.

There, and I still manage to be correct.

      2. Actually, the 3DS had sold well over 2 million units of software in Japan by September 2011 (which was the 3DS’s 7th month on the Japanese market, just like June 2012 is for the Vita). Source.

But you’re just a stupid little troll, so I can’t expect you to learn anything.

        1. VGchartz is estimates and very rarely facts unless they find direct sales figures claims from developers.

          Again, learn your shit.

          1. Developers quote shipped figures, not actual copies sold to customers.

Unlike their global sales data, VGChartz Japanese sales differ very little from the Media Create/Famitsu numbers which basically means they are correct.

And yes, it is true that two days of B&W2 sales have beaten the total Vita software sales in Japan since the Vita launched.

I would suggest you learn your shit.

            1. Shipped figures =/= units sold.

VGchartz is not accurate no matter what excuse you try to hurl in favor of it. Dumbfuck.

  13. I can’t wait to download these over the internet and play em on my r4 card. Would of been more than happy to pay full price for 3ds pokemon, ffs it’s been out for over a year now. Where is our 3ds pokemon?

    1. You pirate it?
Scum, how disrespectful to a company that works had to bring you these title. I hope someoe reports you.

      1. he better keep pirating them, pokemon is not worth the $40 in incremental “upgrades” per game. The game still uses the same 2006 DP engine for the overworld, just zoomed in with larger character sprites. I LOL’D.

        1. Oh, so have you played every Pokemon game? I admit, they start to slip a little, but B/W was great, unlike COD which i have played, and its just got poorer, and they still use the shit engine from 4.
Im not being a “fanboy”, im simply stating the majority of the feedback for both games. But nether the less, its never an excuse to pirate game

          1. You do sound like a fanboy though, ask any CoD fanboy and they’ll tell you pokemon is crap and it hasn’t changed and its being milked. Ask a Pokemon Fanboy and vice versa. the truth is that bot of these games haven’t really changed. yeah they’ve added new features along the way, but that’s it. Too each their own though, if you don’t like over the top Action FPS then don’t play CoD, if you don’t like Rpg’s then don’t play pokemon.

            1. I know but i like over the top FPS games, Bulletstorm was a prime example of a very good FPS, one of the best in at least 10 years. I admit Pokemon got boring but from someone whos played every single one, i can add my 2 cents and say, Black and White was a massive improvement

          1. Vita has not been hacked at all. If you think PSP mode homebrew emulators is “hacking”, then I’d have advise you to get a clue.

      2. I’ll rob them as long as they rob me in the uk, 3ds xl costs way more no doubt Wii u will be more expense in uk.

        1. No-ones making you buy a XL? I live in the UK, i know what the market is like, a while nintendo should have made a RRP, its the stores fault for jacking up the price thinking people wont notice, and tbh, the XL isnt exactly anything to be excited about, just get a normal 3DS.
But its still no excuse for pirating games, at least have some respect for the developers

  14. @naner yeah and angry bird outsold all of wiis lifetime software and cod outsold all of nintendo lifetime software and has been awarded as game of the century lol yet pokemon is and still trash regardless see casual kill truegamers like nintendo -_-

    1. Angry Bird costs £0.69……youd have the sell about 50 copies to make as much money as 1 Pokemon game

    2. And the casual market is just as big if not bigger than the core market. Accept it, companies arent “abandonding” you, Nintendo have always made their business about people playing together and alone, its just more diverse and varied due to tech progression

  15. @theif yup agree nobody can say how many innovation pokemon 2 has lol fail pokemon sucks it cant even outsale microsoft cod or angrybirds. Anyways Monster hunter is more fun imo

  16. LMFAO KOTAKU-NINTENDO US FIGHTING USED GAME SALES OF DRAGON QUESF LMFAO UR BELOVED LIYING COMPANY IS FIGHTING USED GAMES LOL NOE U GUNNA HAVE 2 BUY THEIR UNINSPIRING RECYCKED GAMES ST FULL PRICE HAHA WOW THEY R LIERS OH WELL WUT THE EXCUSE NOW KISSASSES

  17. It’s idiots like this Anon above me that degrade this site. Way to pull figures out of your ass. We all know Angry Birds didn’t make more money than the likes of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and many more. I wanted to stop reading your post there, but I kept going. I regret it. And who would award anything with “game of the century”, when video games haven’t even been around for a century..?

  18. NINTY FAGS CARE MORE ABOUT SALES THAN QUALITY. THATS WHY WII WAS UNDERPOWERD SHOVELWARE LOWTEC GARBAGE UNLIKE ORIGINAL XBOX THAT OUTSOLD BUT HAD QUALITY. NINTENDO R LIER YA CONSUMET MORONS CAN WAIT TO HEAR YA LIYING BS says:

^this lol this faggots that ruin gaming will defend selloutendo calling their cliche uninspiring outdated tiring games for little cracker kids innovation lol they fighting used game sells for dragon quest FUCKING LIERS SELLOUT HAHA

    1. And the quality of Nintendo games is the highest. I never saw any other game that even comes close to rivaling the amount of critical accliam, fandom, awards and “Best game ever” nominations and public opinions as The Legend of Zelda.

  19. Some people dont seem to realize the little differences that justify pokemon better than CoD:
    - Graphics improve with generations of 4-5 years, just like most other series released on the same system (Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks; Partners in Time, Bowser’s Inside Story)
    - They’ve gotten rid of the 3rd versions
    - The last 2 generations had a remake each
    - The dual versions dont encourage getting both, but trading with others
    - Gameplay is enhanced
    - Pokemon has a lot of spin-offs. Spin-offs should not be included in number of releases in this context. Imagine including Mario’s spin-offs, that would make the comparison absurd

    1. The Graphics have NOT improved. The overworld sprites and environments are the SAME engine on Diamond and Pearl. The character sprites are enlarged and the camera is more dynamic, THAT’S it. Battles run at 60 fps now unlike the aforementioned games, but at the cost of pretty shitty looking “animated” sprites, that’s up to you whether you think it’s better or not.
      - “They’ve gotten rid of 3rd versions”…Uhm, how is this an “improvement”? Or even warranting a mention? o_O
      - Yeah, it’s clear you have no clue what “improve” means.
      - Gameplay is enhanced…how? I don’t want to hear these cryptic words thrown around, how is it “improved” in a way that’s meaningful to the series?

      Basically, you’ve listed nothing.

        1. Man, shut the fuck up you stupid Nintendrone virgin, your bullshit replies are a testament to your basement dwelling and lack of intelligence.

      1. The graphics have improved, no matter what you say. Look at a cutscene from Diamond and Pearl and compare it to one from Black and White. Also, the base engine may be the same, but it has some major modifications.

Such as for the Cynthia overworld sprite, it has been re-created to show her limbs more and also with more detail. Your argument has no points, and you’re just here to criticize everything Nintendo does, being the complete representation of a fanboy, but without a base company. I’m not a fanboy, Pokemon has and always will be my favourite game series, whether it’s spinoffs or the main series, it’s what I grew up with.

Black and White completely altered the series, adding in new Pokemon, allowing people to get close to a whole new team of Pokemon instead of just looking for their old team accompanied by their new starter. It also gave players the feeling as if they were more within the game than before with the moving sprites in battle and the new camera angles.

There have been a lot of small improvements that you keep criticizing one-by-one, but altogether, Game Freak turned what I believe was the most disappointing Generation in the series, IV, into possibly the greatest all through numerous additions.

        1. “Cutscene”? ANY GAME could shoehorn a pre-rendered or camera shifted cutscene to give some retarded illusion that it looks “good”.

The game runs and plays the fucking same. The overworld has enlarged sprites, and some redesigned rocks and shit. This is not “major change”. It’s about as meaningless as upscaling a game to higher resolutions and then saying “ooo we changed it”.

Black and White did nothing to “ompletely alter the series” where it counts the most: battles. The camera is dynamic, who cares. They added some gimmicky triple and rotation battles, again, who cares, and what was stopping previous entries from doing that? Every gen adds new Pokemon, this is not substantial changes, just Captain Obviousness. I don’t feel nothing different playing HGSS or any previous game then playing BW/2. Nothing.

tl;dr, basically you helped prove nothing meaningful has actually changed.

          1. People like you are the reason I don’t bother commenting on things. I gave you more reasons why Pokemon has evolved and you simply say that you don’t think there’s any difference so nothing’s changed. I understand that you feel that Pokemon doesn’t change enough to warrant these massive sales, but I’m not against any game. They’re all games, meaning people can play them if they choose. Criticism is hardly necessary, when all that is in order is a congratulations for Game Freak for providing such a large amount of people with an enjoyable game.

            1. >Pokemon has evolved
              >continues to not actually explain how it has evolved.

The series can keep reskinning itself and it will always sell. Just look at Platinum; almost the textbook definition of “nothing new”.

The series will evolve when I can actually look at it and distinguish it from every other DS main series entry in the overworld.

Or when battles are more than just power-creep the living crap out of everything and throwing in some silly battle-style gimmicks like triple or rotation ones.

Want to know the last meaningful change to this series? Ruby & Sapphire, a decade ago.

              1. I see how you feel, but whether you like it or not, the game has evolved. Yes, Platinum made so little changes that I hesitated to purchase it, but Heartgold and Soulsilver evolved the use of the touch screen in the games, Black and White, not so much, but each game does introduce new and innovative things, encouraging people to buy them.

The game series is possibly the greatest gaming powerhouse in history and Game Freak aren’t just going to make major changes that may disrupt what people love about it. If you want a new Pokemon experience, look at Pokemon Colosseum or XD: Gale of Darkness.

  20. pokemon is printing money for nintendo, but not as much money as the last pokemon game?

    it’s over. nintendo is finished

  21. I’m trying to avoid spoilers for these two games for once, except my dang Youtube subscriptions are spamming my subscription box and home page with it… Thanks to them I now know all the gym leaders in order, including the champion…

  22. If Nintendo worried about the Wii U not selling amazingly well at launch all they have to do is have a Pokemon RPG at launch and Nintendo’s all set.

  23. Comparing an RPG to an FPS is like comparing dairy products to meat products, or comparing planets to the Sun.
