Nintendo Talks Wii U GPU And CPU Performance

black_wii_u_gamepad

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, legendary game developer Shigeru Miyamoto, and R&D General Manager Genyo Takeda, have discussed both the Wii U GPU and the CPU during the company’s latest Q4 2012 report. During the report Miyamoto admitted that they initially found it difficult to adjust to high-definition visuals, and that they had to reeducate the team members. Here’s what they had to say about the technical specifications of the Wii U, namely the CPU and GPU.

Q. Isnt the WiiU architecture too much focused on the GPU?

Miyamoto : For High End graphics there is a hurdle, since we have to reeducate our people. The development itself hasn’t changed but we are recruiting specialists that can become core members in each specialized area. External Developers are used to shader techniques and we are collaborating a lot with external companies nowadays so we have a very good development structure.

Iwata: Every gaming hardware has its specialities. There is a timing of hit and miss before the functions can be used fully. We were not able to provide development kits that get out all the power of wiiu until mid of last year. With other gaming consoles firms had 6 to 7 years to experiment but our console has a different balance so it is easy to see who has adapted and who hasn’t. However this is something time will heal so we are not too worried.

Takeda : WiiU is a machine that has a lot of performance compared to its power consumption. The GPU is definately more pronounced than the CPU . There are people saying that the CPU is weak but that is not true. It is a trendl that the cash memory is whats getting biggrr with CPUs not the processing power. i do not think at the CPu is underpowered. It’s just a design where the memory is more stressed.

    1. The CPU is at least on Par with 360. How else do you explain Assassins creed 3 on Wiiu ? It has a different architecture is all and right now Devs are struggling with it. When they max it out , it will probably deliver more performance. Wonderfull 101 is reportedly running at 60FPS on Wiiu and the latest version of the game is gorgeous.

It’s all about Pipeline efficiency and cash memory , etc. Bottom line is The Wiiu’s CPU uses half or less the power the 360 CPU does and can produce the Same or possibly significantly better results.

          1. no idea why the article calls it “cash” but it’s spelled “cache”^^

it’s very hard to reliably measure or even roughly compare CPU performance unless you can run a benchmark on both platforms.. seeing as there are no multiplat benchmark tools for consoles i guess we’ll never know just how capable the wii Us CPU is or isn’t

                    1. system specs? those wouldn’t be of much use.. we already know most of the system specs but they don’t allow us to determine how powerful the cpu is… besides in order to list system specs that site has to *know* the components that you’re using… for a PC that’s not a problem because specs of common PC hardware are readily available

                      Like

        2. Processor speed is a thing of the past.. Much like polygon count doesn’t mean much these days. Large Cache memory is the way to go. What does that do? It makes Out of Order Execution work. In Order execution will process things as they are needed. But out of order will process them even if they are not needed immediately and they will be stored in the cache. The larger the cache the better. So the architecture enables the cpu to multitask even more effectively than the tri core xbox 360.

        3. Epere15, you do realize clock speed doesn’t have anything to do with speed. I had a 3ghz Athlon 64 that is slower than my new CPU that is clocked at 2ghz.

This GPGPU is pretty fast, a Radeon 6770 is no slouch, it will be almost as fast as the leaked specs in the PS4/720, which are only a slight step up (maybe 50% but most likely 20-30% faster, and when it comes to frames per second it will not be that noticeable)

        1. what i means is that it not will be that more powerfull. the wii u got at least 800 gflops but some rumors say it had 1000 gflops, the xbox8 1200 geflops,ps4 1800gflops. so that means the xbox8 got 400 or 200 gflops more, and de ps4 1000 or 800 more. with the 1 times more powerfull 1 mean 100 procent, but if this rumors are treu the xbxo is 40 procent stronger then the wii u,and the ps4 100 procent, and that’s not a bigleap. it will be like ps360, and nintendo is good in making games beatyfull so it will look almost the same…

          1. Orbis and Durango sound like they’ll be about 2.5 Wii Us duct-taped together. Both of them (especially Durango) will focus a lot on multitasking, so they won’t be able to use all that power most of the time. Unreal Engine 4, CryEngine 3 and FrostBite 2 are all engines designed for eighth-gen that run on Wii U.

            So there.

              1. Unreal Engine 4 has been confirmed to be capable of running on Wiiu. They said if a developer wants to use unreal engine 4 on Wiiu they can , it’s an extremely scalable engine. They also said Unreal engine 3 was a really nice fit for wiiu. This statement was made before the final Wiiu dev kits were out.

                Like

                  1. They didn’t recommend it, they said it’s a good fit for the console. Unreal Engine 3 was scaled down for smart phones too. Does that mean that 360/PS3 were using the same level as Infinity Blade? No. Infinity Blade looks nice on your smart phone, but so what? Unless you are implying a smart phone will be able to run Unreal Engine 4 at the same capacity as Wii U, which would be laughable at best, the Wii U will be plenty capable of running Unreal Engine 4 at a level much higher than an iPhone. Remember, that statement was based on an outdated, unfinished developer kit that they had at the time. The final kits were released after the first batch of Wii U games were being made or ported.

The rumored game is said to be in its first stages of development, and it is apparently being developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, which is a game engine that Nintendo’s Wii U is capable of running.” – A quote from another article on this site. Epic games themselves have said the Wii U is capable of running it, and said developers can port the engine to the Wii U if they wish.

      2. Agreed. i highly doubt that either microsoft or sony will make a tremendously over powered system purely due to manufacturing costs. my prediction is that both companies will make sure that there is at least a noticable difference in terms of graphical quality in comparison to their previous generations systems, but focus more on control interfaces, such as a next generation kinect and playstation move. this next generation will be more about differences in gameplay rather than quality of visuals

Devs may have to do a bit of optimization to get the games up and running on wii U, but I’m confident Nintendo will get 3rd prty titles, for at least half of wii U’s life.

  1. I posted this on the gear box thing and i’m going to post it again so i can see a few people opinion

Can we have comments like “Can’t wait to find out more” etc? I’m sick of seeing people argue on this site- which leads to that stupid word ‘butthurt’ and then vulgar comments. What i really find quite amusing is that people insult each other by saying stuff like “Stupid 12 year olds” (etc) when most of you are adults.

Anyway….My opinion about the Wii u’s capabilities is: Why the heck would Nintendo produce expensive “next gen” games when their current competition (currently) isn’t? Maybe the reason Nintendo is secretive about the specs is due to them not wanting the competition to know what it’s capable of, then when their competition start raising the bar, they can too?
The wii u has only just come out (and i think earlier than it should have), remember the first XBOX games? Compare them to the new ones. Yeah, there’s a significant difference. The games will only get better, for example: Visuals, gameplay, mechanics, creativity, AI.

Though i could be completely wrong, which i’m open to. I respect that one of you said something about investing (if you can afford) in all consoles? If you can’t then stay away from the ones you don’t like. SERIOUSLY. Why do you come on this site and say stuff like “WII U GUNNA FAYUL OMG LOL” It’s fine for you to have an opinion but when you come on an ALL NINTENDO site…it just seems stupid.

Last thing, sorry for my rant. I know that this site will never have a happy comment section. But i do hope that we mature a little. Not age wise, because your age is irreverent.

    1. The problem with the” remember early Xbox 360 games?” Argument is that the Xbox 360 was made of brand new tech that even PCs didn’t have at the time.(some might have, but those were the ultra powerful ones) so of course devs didn’t know how to use the xbox 360 to make games look good, it was a whole new generation of tech that no one knew how to use to its fullest. But the Wii U is notably older tech that has been developed for for years, of course startout wii U games will look worse then their future games. But there will not be a huge jump between beginning and end like in the 360.

        1. Actually Joseph could be right about that….. Xbox 360 was really powerful in beginning, X1800 in 2006 + 32 MB eDRAM for AA etc. Xbox 360 GPU really was a BEAST, the GPU was cutting edge.

Im not sure what the hell Wii U is capable of but i think these 1GB + 1GB refers to 1GB RAM (system, OS, miiverse etc) and another 1GB is actually VRAM and that means its reserved for the GPU and last, we all know the Wii U GPU is a High Definition Radeon but we dont know the exact model. Wii U AMD HD Radeon with 1GB VRAM vs PS3 nVidia 7800gt 256MB VRAM vs Xbox 360 ATI X1800 256MB VRAM…. but the Wii U GPU is still not a beast, just look at 2GB VRAM GPUs, CF and SLI etc……

          1. I think a Ubisoft developer let the cat out of the bag, and its a Radeon HD 6770.

Now as far as the ram goes it has 2gb in all, the dev kits Nintendo initially sent out is reserving 1gb, which can change as the OS becomes more optimized, so for example the next revision could unleash an extra 512mb to developers.

This could be why Pikmin 3 was pushed back as they need more memory to store more high res textures, some of the screenshots while look gorgeous, the ground looked it was a low res place holder intentionally. Time will only tell, we should know more by end of spring/beginning of Summer when it releases.

I think it will end up with considerably better graphics than ps4 and 720 but maybe considerably behind PS4 and 720. Sort of inbetween Ps3 and PS4. We have no evidence to prove this or disprove this yet , but 1-2 years from now there will be games that prove it is considerably better than Gen 7 graphically.

        1. Resoloution is just resoloution , if they were 4K it would hold back the Fidelity of those consoles. Assassins creed 3 running 1080p native compared to it running 4K native is hardly a leap at all. One just looks a tiny bit crisper if you start eyeballing your monitor up close.

I say fuck resoloution and focus on 720 and 1080p 30/60FPS , but actually increase the Graphics. For example the N64 and gamecube both put out the same standard definition resoloution , but the Gamecube dramtically increased visual fidelity.

Resoloution is important , but jumping to 4K is just not needed. 1080p with anti aliasing can look near perfect.

Game settingson the other hand are far more important…. 1080p or 1920x 1080p is recommended aka should be native for 22″ – 24″ monitors/TV but most poeple with PS3 and Xbox 360 dont complain about that, they are playing games in 720p resolutuon or in other words 1280x 720 on 30-60 ” TVs.

Now, whos a hypocrite? its obivious!

There isn’t much difference to the common eye between 720p and 1080p. As soon as a game is rendered below native 720p it becomes obvious though. Games rendered at 720p glow and pop much better than Sub HD games.

  5. People are obsessing too much over specs. The spec argument is basically this generations version of the bit wars, except with more drama. It’s one thing to be interested or concerned for the specs the console is using, and it’s another to simply use it as leverage to prove console A is better than console B. Again, just like the bit wars.

What gets me though is the majority of people who use the specs argument don’t know shit about tech. They see the phrase “PS4 will have an 8 core processor” and they flip out like it’s the most powerful machine ever made, disregarding the people who actually know tech who will tell you that there are triple cores out there that beat 8 core processors, but that’s besides the point. Spec talk is a simple fanboy argument to prove their console is better. Once again, following the bit wars, and just like the gamers knowledge of what a bit was, these people do not know tech.

  7. Exactly.

Both of the very likely rumoured specs for the oter consoles, BOTH have weaker CPU’s, because they dont need them to be CELL processors, its all different architechture.

Im just glad every console has sort of banded together and taken the exact same brand of GPU and CPU as each console, that’ll make porting to consoles alot cheaper, effieciant, and you wont have case where companies couldnt use the CELL processor, and games look better or worse depending on the console.

    1. They are all eyeing up each others architecure to steal or share ports/development. Businesses won’t think twice about porting if it’s easy and less time consuming. You will even see Wiiu games get ported to Ps4 and 720.

  9. Considering the fact that the next generation of graphics engines, Unreal Engine 4, Frostbite 2, FOX Engine, Cry Engine 3 can all be run on the Wii U, The gap will be much, much smaller this time around. Even if PS4/720 are quite a bit more powerful, they will just have more or less better textures/effects/lighting at best. Unlike the fact that the Wii couldn’t run Unreal Engine 3, Frostbite, Cry Engine 1 or 2, while those were the standards for PS3/360 games. That’s why the gap was so big between Wii and PS3/360. The Wii U may not be able to max out Unreal 4, or some of those engines, (reports do say it runs Unreal Engine 3 with ease) and maybe PS4/720 will, but again, the difference between the same engines at max settings or medium high settings, is not the same as we saw with Wii and PS3/360.

It’s probably going to be much closer to 360 vs PS3. The Wii U will be in the 360’s position, and quite possibly, most multi platform titles will be built on it, and ported over to 720/PS4, much like many games are built on the 360 and ported to PS3, and now the Wii U as well. That could be good for Nintendo, to be the “platform of choice” for the next generation. They will be accustomed to it by then, and will have a pretty easy time developing on it, and we’ll see more 3rd party games on the system. Seems likely, but of course, anything is possible. I just don’t see how the gap would be so great, that it wouldn’t pan out in that kind of fashion.

    1. I think the differences will be more kind of resolution and frame rate. Example ps4 games may be 1080p native in 60 frames while wiiu could have the exact same game in 720p in 45 frames.

      Like

      1. That’s also entirely possible. The Wii is capable of 1080p native/60fps, but will it be for later games? Maybe not so much, but I think once the nuances of the Wii U are learned, it will stand up pretty well to the upcoming Sony/MS consoles.

          1. Dude, chill out. You are taking what I said completely wrong. I know the Wii U is already doing 60fps with 1080p native. They are doing that on graphics engines comparable with Unreal 3, which has been a sort of standard for PS3/360 games. Now, the Wii U can, as I stated before, run the next generation of engines, like Unreal 4, Cry engine 3, FOX Engine, Frostbite 2 and the like. The question remains to be seen, if the Wii U can run THOSE engines at 1080p at 60fps. Maybe it can, maybe it won’t. We won’t know. I’m not saying the Wii U sucks, not in the slightest. I love my Wii U, and I have high hopes for it. DERP yourself, for not understanding my comment.

              1. Dude, Frostbite 2 was used on Battlefield 3, a 360 game, and Epic Games has said developers could use Unreal 4 on a Wii U game, if they chose to do so.

I think you are confusing capable with confirmed. There hasn’t been a confirmed game, as of yet, that uses Frostbite 2, or Unreal 4 on Wii U. The discussion is that Wii U is CAPABLE… C-A-P-A-B-L-E … of running the game engines, that are designed for the next generation. Do you get it yet? I sure hope so.

                Like

                  1. I doubt there will be new engines. Unreal 4/Frostbite 2/FOX Engine/Cry Engine 3 are all very, very new, and were meant for the next set of consoles. All of them except Unreal 4, have made an appearance, or are about to make an appearance, on PS3/360.

                    Battlefield 3 on 360 used Frostbite 2
Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeros on PS3 is using FOX Engine
Crysis 3 on PS3/360 is using Cry Engine 3

They are running on the lower end of their specs on those consoles, yet look better than almost any other games on those consoles. The Wii U can run them in higher capacity, and possibly close to, or at max.

                    Like

                    1. I have not seen that engine, but I would imagine it’s impressive, like all the others are. They aren’t super huge leaps like say Unreal 3 over Unreal 2, but they do look very crisp and clean, and should make for some nice eye candy in the years to come

                      Like

                  1. You are correct, that game does use Frostbite 2, and is confirmed for Wii U, so indeed, Frostbite 2 is confirmed for Wii U. Thanks for pointing that out, I wasn’t aware of that little tidbit.

    2. What?

You think that most developers will develop games on the Wii u and port it over to the ps4/720?

I highly doubt that since so many developers are already hesitant to bring games to the Wii u. It just isn’t going to happen. They are not going to build a game and optimize it for the Wii u if developers think that their core audience is on other platforms. It just doesn’t make sense when you step back and think about it for a second.

I think the more likely situation is that they will port the games and scale down the graphics, effects, and etc. This is perfectly acceptable to me. Wii games (like Twilight Princess) look good enough for me.

      Like

      1. It’s definitely possible, especially if the Wii U is relatively comparable to the PS4/720, like the 360 was to the PS3, AND it’s easier to develop on than PS4/720. I agree that there is some hesitation from 3rd parties. There are a few possible reasons for that though.

Is it because they are having such a hard time breaking even, let alone making profit on big budget games on PS3/360, that they are not willing to jump full on into the next, more expensive to develop, generation of games just yet?

Is it because the Wii U hasn’t sold that many units? It’s sold more than PS4/720, obviously… but maybe because the Wii didn’t seem to sell as many software titles as PS3/360? (on a side note, the Wii has far more games that sold 5+ million copies than either PS3/360, but most were indeed first party)

There may be some bad blood from the Wii, that is keeping them hesitant. Of course a Wii version of say, COD wouldn’t sell as well as the other versions. People interested in that genre are typically graphics whores. The “hardcore” gamer that 3rd parties love, need these “supah grafix” to satisfy their whims. The Wii couldn’t do that, PLUS, they collectively dismissed the Wii as a “waggle fest”, which was a pretty piss poor attitude towards a really fun console.

The Wii U isn’t going to be in the same position as the Wii. It has, what will be, comparable graphics this time, it has a “modern controller” with the Pro Controller (It’s a freaking 360 controller) plus, the potential for a couple of neat extra tricks with the Gamepad, which can just as easily be ignored completely, and just allow for off screen play, and would be acceptable to many.

Time will tell what happens. It’ll be interesting to see it unfold regardless.

        1. Until either the ps4 or 720 emerges (both of them revealed would be better though), exactly how much Wii U compares to either of them really is up in the air. This wait for an exact comparison is really aggravating.

          Like

          1. If the PS4/720 are insanely more powerful than Wii U, the best you can expect, would be This: PS4/720 – Unreal Engine 4 maxed out with 4K resolution with 60fps gameplay, vs Wii U- Unreal Engine 4 at medium to high settings, with 1080p and 30-60fps

That’s a MUCH smaller difference than Wii compared to 360/PS3. The Wii couldn’t even run Unreal Engine 3 in ANY capacity at all. It could only run Unreal Engine 2. The difference between Unreal Engine 2 and 3 is also much larger than Unreal Engine 3 and 4. The Wii U will be much, much more comparable to PS4/720, than Wii was to PS3/360.

Final note. If the PS4/720 could do those max settings, of native 4K at 60fps and max out even Unreal Engine 4 (PS3 can’t really max out Unreal Engine 3) then you could expect to see a price point nearly double that of the Wii U, or at least in the $500+ range. Those games would probably cost closer to $70 as well, as costs would go up. Don’t forget the price of 4K tv’s right now.

            Like

            1. Just like the PS/360 can both run games at native 1080p/60fps…. But most of the time they don’t. Just because the tip of the iceberg may be something the Wii U may not be able to handle, I wouldn’t expect there to be hardly any (if any at all) graphical differences between the Wii U and the PS4/Next Box. Like anyone on here, I could be wrong. Besides, isn’t anything over a native 1080p/60fps practically unnoticeable and doesn’t mean anything at all unless you got a 60 + inch television that’s 4K. I think resolution is obsolete at this moment in time, except for the small few who actually own huge 4K TV’s (who knows what the future holds though) and the next gen will worry more about engines. This (as we can all pretty much assume) will be able to be handled at 1080p/60fps the exact same across the board on all systems. At least on the most modern engines out now.

        2. Wow! What an essay. First off, let me thank you for the reply.

There are a lot of things that I have issues with in your reply.

You state that the Wii U is easier to develop for than the ps4/720. How do any of us know that? For all we know, the Wii U could be incredibly difficult to develop for in comparison to the ps4/720.

I think the bad blood that you refer to is 3rd party developers’ software bombing on N consoles because N’s 1st party software totally eclipses their products.

You hit on an important point, which is graphic whores. I am no graphics whore (I am just fine with gamecube graphics to be honest), but others are. And others need their FPS fix. And Microsoft and Sony have cornered that market (for consoles…not PC’s). So, due to brand recognition, brand loyalty, and etc. people who like those “mature” games are going to gravitate toward the Sony and MS consoles. Since MS and Sony have cornered that market and those kind of gamers will get the ps4/720, it just makes sense to optimize their games for those systems. It wouldn’t make sense to create a game from scratch on company’s consoles (Wii/Wii u) where your franchise has performed poorly on or just have not been tested on. Just strictly from a business perspective, it would be more financially viable to develop for the ps4/720 and optimize their games on platforms where they have had success than optimizing it on a N console where N has historically stolen the spot light with their first party titles. An important thing to keep in mind is that those making these decisions on which platform to develop on is all made by guys in suits who probably have little passion for gaming.

Also, dev kits from sony and Ms are out, so that plays a role.

Another thing to keep in mind is that developers/companies have preferences for each console. As patcher would put it, some companies are fanboys too. If they spend years developing for MS and Sony, then they are probably have attached feelings to MS or Sony and may be hating on N. These biases can influence how developers create and optimize games. Just look at rev3games (I know they don’t develop games). N is doing great things, but they just sh*t on N because they are MS and Sony fanboys. Or patcher…that guy just hates N. My point – biases affect business decisions or the way they perceive the video gaming world.

          What are your thoughts?

          Like

          1. You have made some very good points, and thanks for taking the time to come up with them.

The Wii U may not be easier to develop for, but many developers have said that since the overall architecture is similar to the 360, that they found the learning curve to be much smaller than it has been in the past. The ports to Wii U have been relatively easy for them, for the PS3/360 games that they have ported over already, and some that are upcoming, like Aliens: Colonial Marines, which supposedly looks the best on Wii U, according to the developers. Their first Wii U game, and they’ve managed what they claim are easy improvements, with no problems in the port, like say Bayonetta on PS3. That said, it’s still possible that the PS4/720 will be easier, but they will have at a minimum, of a full year head start on the Wii U, as it’s development kits have been available for nearly a year before it was finalized and released. The final kits were only recently released, for the record though.

If that is any reason for any bad blood, then, that’s really shallow. For someone to hate making games on Nintendo consoles, just because Nintendo games sell insanely well, compared to their games (like 25 million copies of NSMBWii), is all but silly. I sure hope that’s not the issue. It’s not impossible for Nintendo to reclaim the 3rd party support they used to have, from the NES/SNES era. They skipped disc games on N64, which hurt them bad, and bit them through the gamecube era. The Wii was ignored because developers really wanted to use these new graphics engines, that the Wii couldn’t run, and left ports to the Wii to smaller, unknown or lesser known teams, lackluster support for independent developers on Wii Ware and it’s constrictions, and the controllers as well, unfortunately. They have seemingly taken this into consideration, and have given mainstream 3rd party developers what they want. Raw power, a “normal” controller (Pro controller) robust online, great support for independent developers, and yet, gave them something new to play with the gamepad.

There are definitely fanboy developers. Thankfully, most are already exclusives to a particular console. Bungie/343 industries/Naughty Dog etc, are exclusive to MS/Sony. Then you have teams like Platinum Games, which make games for everybody, and don’t seem to show any bias. Ditto with Team Ninja. It happens, but maybe to a lesser extent than it would seem.

Either way, the Wii U is great, and the future of gaming will be interesting to see.

            Like

      2. Think a out it. Development could spend this year learning how to program for the Wii U instead of learning the PS4 and 720 a year from now. Porting to the 720 and PS4 for most multiplats would save them a lot of time.

Remember, the Xbox 720 is using DDR3 RAM meaning its using the same type of RAM as the Wii U and the fact that its 3 of its 8GBs is used for the OS and who knows, maybe only 1GB is used for the games whilst 3GBs are used for the Browser and Internet and the 1GB left over might be used for Updates.

Meaning the Next Xbox is on the same Level as the Wii U in terms of Power, GPU wise… Xbox Next or whatever is using a MOBILE chipset… yep… the same chipset that lives inside a Galaxy S3 is going to be inside of the Next Xbox but most likely more powerful.

CPU wise… overkill much? Not many developers will take advantage of the 8-Cores of the CPU in the Next Xbox, this happened with the PS3 and look how many “good” ports came to that… it was rare to even get ONE good ported game from the Xbox to the PS3. The Next Xbox will most likely suffer the same faint.

PS4 however, is obviously going to be more powerful but only by a small margin.
