Japan: Wii U Sales Plummet Under 7K, 3DS Remains Best-Seller

wii_U_whiteThis week’s Media Create sales are now in from Japan, and it’s a poor week for the Wii U. It’s the first week since mid-June that we’ve seen Nintendo’s home console plummet under 7,000 sales. The Wii U sold just 6,741 this week prior to last week’s 7,030, but with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD edition on its way later this month, we can only hope sales will start to gain momentum again. But the 3DS, of course, still remains the best-selling hardware in Japan.

In terms of software, PlayStation 3 Jo Jo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle takes the top spot, with Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn closely following. Previous number one 3DS title Disney Magic Castle: My Happy Life rounds up the top 5, with four other 3DS games following. 1. It’s a good MMO. Decent story, lots of quests to go on. PC is the superior version though. I have played both but the UI is kind of crappy on the PS3 and of course the visuals and performance have been dumbed down a bit. Also, considering it’s a FF game in the modern era, there’s a crap ton of text where I wish there were voice overs. But it does have some scenes which are voiced.

My main issue with it is that it’s a monthly sub game, which I’m not going to pay for. Fortunately, I have hookups. Otherwise, I wouldn’t pay to play.

    1. Not in japan. Nintendo is focusing what will sell well everywhere. Metroid, f-zero, and Star Fox are aimed at America only really. Plus they have never been really been big system sellers. I love those games too but maybe we’ll see them later on the wii u and 3ds

  1. Yeah and also with the fact that these gamers don’t like Famitsu anymore as W101 got 39/40 i’m so shocked it hasn’t been brought up heavily

    1. Same why the huge increase in sales with no major games released? I’ll pick up that special 3ds and sell it for like 400$ lol

    1. I think it will improve sales quite a bit. It’s old enough now that there’ll be plenty of people out there that never played it on GC, especially given how many new gamers the Wii picked up. Coupled with the fact that you can get it packaged with the Wii U, I think it’ll have an impact. That red Z on a gold box does move merchandise, not hugely so, but it does.

    2. Actually lots of gamestops have sold out on pre-orders of the Zelda bundle and ganondorf editions. Sell might begin to pick a lot more then they have

    3. Of course not, no single game can (unless if it is a Wii Sport/Fit-level type of success).

It will be multiple games this year that will save WiiU. “Console moving” games are coming this year. It’s just up to Nintendo to show how hard they want Sales this holiday with a marketing campaign.

Zelda WWHD and Wii Party U will release only a few weeks apart. They are the “kickstart” Nintendo needs. Both will move consoles even if PartyU gets only a fraction of they success Wii Sports got and WWHD is only half that of Twilight Princess or Zelda OoT 3D.

If things go well, WiiU is saved. Then, they just have to follow up with a continuous flow of good games for 2014, to maintain or speed-up(w/mario kart) sales momentum.

    4. Ignoring the Starfx 64 remake on and Ocarina of Time port saved (not even a remade Zelda) the 3DS but you rather play dumb as if that never happened.

  2. I think this confirms wonderful 101 did flop in Japan. Guess miyamoto was right about Japanese gamers being now scare of hard games.

  3. just wait for Pokemon X and Y, Zelda A Link Between Worlds, Super Mario 3d world, Sonic Lost World and Tropical Freeze

  4. Well yeah, I would think the Wii U sales plummeted because everybody’s waiting to get the deluxe model at $299 or the other deluxe model with Wind Waker!

    1. Wake up yourself. They as always will get the best bundle. 67 021 3DSs sold, that more than what the PS3,WiiU, vita, PSP, wii, DS and the free xbox being given in Japan have sold in 2 weeks. That is a 3DS LL and standard with no real new games released. NINTENDO DOMINATION :).

    2. Ignoring that just becausevit wasn’t announced in Japan doesn’t mean it won’t happen. Hell this Friday could be a Nintendo Direct. You can’t predict Nintendo.

  5. What first/second party games will be released in 2014 aside from X, Smash Bros, Mario Kart, Zelda (2015?), Bayonetta 2?

  6. WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE??? There’s no price drop announced for Japan. The price drop is for America and Europe. So what exactly are the Japanese waiting for?

      1. Duh! There’s no price drop announced or coming for Japan. Duh! In that case they must have been waiting since the console launched for a price drop. Duh!

    1. Japan too is getting a price drop. This time only after we do. They will probably get an X, DK and Mario 3D world bundle while we drool and enviously cheer clap clap clap :).

  7. Ignoring that the PS3 almost doubled due to software releasing. Ignoring the vita dropped in sales by almost half. Ignoring that there is a bundle for the WiiU people are holding out for. Ignoring that the xbox360 is being given out for free in Japan and sold only 177 still LOL.

  8. wiiu is so much fun. lots of games are coming now as well…
i own all the consoles. the most charming, refreshing and fun to use one is the wiiu.
what’s wrong with the gamers these days? annual shooters, sports games, that’s what’s hot these days?
whats not to like about the wiiu. seriously. i don’t get it.

  9. I kind of expected this. The next two weeks probably won’t be much better, then there will be a sudden spike after that. Realistically, how many people would buy a console when it’s getting a price drop and a limited-edition bundle in less than 3 weeks?

  10. Why oh WHY is this happening to the Wii U? When will the sales finally pick up? I thought Pikmin 3 would do it. But it still don’t look very promising. I Haven’t even bought a Wii U YET, but if things keep going this bad for it, it makes me wonder if buying one would just be a waste of money? Because if it doesn’t start selling pretty soon, Nintendo might even cancel production of the Wii U altogether. That would be tragic.
