Kamiya Says Developing For Wii U Was Pretty Much The Same As Xbox 360 Or PlayStation 3

Platinum Games designer Hideki Kamiya has told his fans on Twitter that developing for the Wii U was pretty much the same as developing for the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Kamiya was asked the question by a fan due to a recent feature by Digital Foundry which suggested that Wii U was more of a complex machine to develop for than the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3.

Same, I think. RT @ErgoKnight: how easy/hard was the wii u to develop for compared to 360/ps3?

Thanks, Retrogaminglord

    1. It is not!!
      Its… A little better!
Honestly, It’s GOT to be easier to develop for the WiiU than the Wii. The amount of downscaling they probably had to do last Gen must have been painful.

      1. Talking to a friend, they really couldn’t downscale textures effectively (or up for that matter). Pretty much they would redraw them for games.

      1. Nope. But when someone bitches and whines about how the WiiU is a pain to dev for when there is actual arguments suggesting why this is false, like the Chris Arnold post, I can’t help but feel glad knowing at east some developers out there just aren’t extremely lazy idiots who will blame the hardware that’s been proven to work rather than themselves.

        1. The guy said 3 words as a twitter reply… He didn’t explain his full experience and I’m pretty sure he wasn’t going to say it was the hardest thing he’s ever done.

          1. Which is why I referenced to Chris Arnold who went into far more detail. And spoiler, but when teams like this are actually having lots of trouble… that’s when they say things along the lines of “It’s been a challenging yet fun experience for the team” BS when they’re trying to not piss off a company.

            1. Also platinum are the kind of devs that honestly just don’t give a damn to begin with, if they didn’t want to be making games for the WiiU, they wouldn’t be. It’s not like they haven’t been making games for 360, PS3, PC and more than likely will for next gen consoles.

          2. If the Kamiya wanted to give details, he would have bluntly have. The dude told some people to fuck off so I dont think it can go worse than that.

      2. Someone that comes to a Nintendo site and is surprised to see a bunch of people who love Nintendo and N’s hardware is an idiot

      1. No, it’s because they know it’s not worth the effort, since 3rd-party multiplats rarely ever sell well on Nintendo platforms. Sometimes even exclusives.

To be fair, Kamiya probably got better help from Nintendo than Digital Foundry. Kamiya was making an exclusive for Wii U that visually appeals to Nintendo’s audience. I’m speculating, of course.

    1. The Digital Foundry thing was probably a fake. It was way to sketchy. Read through it again and you’ll find some weird things in there like the people who work at Nintendo never playing a Playstation or Xbox.

  2. Yeah, because “same, I think” provides just as much information as the answer by Digital Foundry.

You fanboys are so desperate for anything the least bit positive about the Wii U that you’ll eat up 3 words from a developer about the system while disregarding any other opinion on it that doesn’t agree with your world-view of Nintendo. Pathetic.

    1. Wait what? Wait what? This has been proven twice and he is just saying its no harder to develop for or hasn’t noticed it is harder. Why did you just go into a fanboy rant?

There a lot of legitimate Nintendo fans on this site that know the faults and scold the Big N for it. Calm your tits sir

    2. The development isn’t that hard people make it harder by not rewriting the code so it matches the wii u better.

    3. Wow I respect you so much for this. Thanks for actually telling it like it is.

To be honest I think Sickr did this because people are always claiming him to be a “Hater” because he’s posts a lot of “Nintendo doomsday” articles. When in reality thats just how things are for nintendo and the fanboys can’t accept that.

      1. Except Nintendo’s got 8 billion dollars in the bank and they’re valued more than Sony and they’re the only people who can realistically sell their games in China

        1. I never said Nintendo was going under. I was just saying that the articles that sicker has been posting are reality and fanboys are having a hard time accepting that.

        2. Im sure as hell if this was called MySonyNews or if Sickr still had his Vita website we would hear daily Sony doomsday articles and the Sony drones would bitch the same ammount as most of you Nintendo drones.

      2. yes nintendo is doom because the 3ds sales are through the roof and wii u is struggling. Its mostly wii u articles talking about the struggle the system is going through. I remember all the ps3 or sony doom articles in the past and ps3 skyrocketed.

        1. “The PS3 has barely any games. Sony are pretty much done for in the gaming industry.” Ahhh those were the days.

          1. LOL I have no games for my ps3. All I have is MVC3, GOW collection, sly trilogy, ps all stars, Street figter 4, last of us, infamous, little big planet and ect

            1. I recommend the Uncharted series if you’re looking for a fantastic series of games. My favorite games on the PS3.

    4. Thank you, thank you very much. Finding people with common sense on this website is always a nice thing. Doesn’t happen very often though, unfortunately.

  3. My complaint about the Wii U is there isn’t enough games to keep me satisfied and a lot of big third party games that I want are not even on or coming to Wii U. I want Titanfall or Destiny, I wanted Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Dead Space 3, GTA V and none of them came to my Wii U and Nintendo is bringing games like SSBU and Mario Kart are taking forever.

    1. Well we wouldn’t have gotten titan fall to begin with but I see ur point, were very unlikely to get anything from EA, and some other devs as well

      1. Yeah and it’s p1ssing me off big time as well.

I just don’t see why we should suffer. At the end of the day, these 3rd party developers could actually produce some hits for the console.

And before anyone says “But 3rd party doesn’t do well on Nintendo’s stuff” enough of that bullcrap, don’t want to be hearing it.

This generation Nintendo wants to have the core game back and I want a slice of some pretty intensive games. 3rd party could do something that’s never been done before, or are 3rd party too lazy to do something different and take advantage of the new hardware. Ubisoft are giving it a go. Why can’t anyone else.

3rd party cannot expect Nintendo to improve the install base, because that would be idiotic.

        1. It’s Nintendo who has to work on the image of the WiiU, not 3rd-party developers. It’s Nintendo’s console, after all. It was them who promised the WiiU was going to be a console suited for core gamers and that they’ll go a whole different way with the WiiU. But what did they do ? They used their biggest chance they’ve ever had (E3 prior to release) to showcase a game like Nintendoland, nothing but Nintendoland. The epitome of casual game. And that was the moment everyone knew Nintendo is going to go the very same way with the WiiU as they did with the Wii, targeting the casual market.
Nintendo is failing hard at marketing and if they don’t do anything about that anytime soon, you will continue to not see any major 3rd-party titles on the WiiU. No point in blaming developers, it’s Nintendo who have to get off their asses and do something.

      2. Why not ? The PS4 is very likely going to get Titanfall 2, but the WiiU never is being mentioned in talks like that. Why ? Because the neither the audience of the WiiU nor the WiiU is suited for games like that. 3rd-party titles, especially multiplats, rarely sell well on Nintendo platforms.

  4. I am not quite sure why there is a comparison of coding going on considering the hardware configs are different. Surely it should simple still but obviously you’re having to put different pieces of code onto the GPGPU rather than CPU? That’s what it’s all about with the other consoles.

  5. Great… now we are going to get articles like this for the next 2 years -_-

God damn “anonymous developer” LOOK WHAT YOU DID!

  6. After playing the Wonderful 101 I am FULLY confident that the Wii U is way stronger than the ps3 and 360 but not as strong as the xbone or ps4 BUT that doesn’t mean that the games will not be attractive! W101 run at a blistering 60 fps and looks really good! Great devs will have NO problem making good looking games for WiiU, only the bad ones..

    1. Oh I wouldn’t say that. We’ve worked it out that each core of Wii U is as powerful as 2 cores of PS4 and X1’s x86 core’s. It can outgun it on IPC.

Wii U’s cores can do up to 3 instruction per clock, thats 3 IPC for each core 3*3 = 9

X1 and PS4 can only do 2 instructions per clock. So 2 cores have to do 3 instructions per clock. So just as powerful. Plus the technology of Wii U’s cores is alot more efficient on the code and can knock them out thanks to a 4 stage pipeline and 5 excections points on each core. Thats 15 executions points! 3*5 = 15.

I don’t think x86 has that many. No where near.

        1. Processing wise it’s amazing and with simple knowledge about how it actually works the raw horsepower is great the only thing that holds it back is that it doesn’t have all the ram ps4 and xbone have to add in extra lighting and texture patches which if you haven’t noticed Microsoft had to outsource with cloud processing to have to render those new textures so the system was in fact meant to run the games off the disc as best as possible without sacrificing the need of cloud rendering which is unstable and not a long term solution

    2. I wouldn’t say W101 is a taxing game though, texture wise.
Having 100-200 dudes on screen moving individually, yeah maybe, but visually it’s not.

Not like it matters anyway, the gameplay is outstanding.

  7. So why in the hell are these devs having a hard time making games for the Wii U if its basically what they were used to already for the last 7yrs. Excuses.

    1. We need a Metal Gear Rising sequel from Platinum first.

Actually we need a Vanquish sequel first but that ain’t happening, shooters are embarrassingly poor as they are next to Vanquish, like a publisher would give P* a chance to IMPROVE something like Vanquish.

  8. I love it when people like Digital Foundary go into excessive detail about how ” it’s so difficult, it’s a chore”, then people like Kamiya and Shin’en just go “yeah, about the same, i think”.

All about having GOOD programmers, and developers.
