Square Enix CEO Says They’re Working On ‘Surprise’ New Console JRPG

Yosuke Matsuda, the president of Square Enix, has teased fans by stating that the company is busy working on a surprise new console JRPG. The new JRPG will be released for the company’s fiscal 2015. Whether it’s a new IP or an existing franchise such as Dragon Quest remains to be seen, but it’s certainly interesting nonetheless. Matsuda also said that the company is “charged” for E3 in June.

“For fiscal 2015, I think we have a considerable amount of high-end games both inside and outside the country. Starting with Final Fantasy XV, we’ll be putting out news for Japanese RPGs.”

“I think we’ll have a little surprise, too,” before clarifying he’s referring to “a JRPG for home game machine(s).”

Square Enix’s personal resolution for fiscal year 2015, according to Matsuda, is “a box of surprises.” This apparently refers to how well the company can deliver in terms of releasing surprising and interesting works.”

“With respect to HD titles for 2015, our Japanese and Western studios are both bolstering their lineups considerably, so it’d be wise to keep an eye on them,” Matsuda concluded.”

Oh! No, I mean “our” affectionately. I come here often enough, I feel like the articles belong to every one of the regulars.

    1. Agreed, so how is this Nintendo News?? Nothing in this article is remotely associated with anything Nintendo…

      1. Since it doesn’t specifically state what console it’s for, it COULD be coming out for the Wii U. *wink*

  1. So what? It’s not like it’s going to be on Wii U anyway. SE doesn’t like releasing good games on the Wii U.

  3. So they are going to announce another game that will take almost a decade to be released? All kidding aside, they really need to stop announcing games that are outside 2 years of being released.

      1. I finished FF7 on Sunday and beat the final bosses on my first try! (bragging rights XD) But yeah I loved the game and I seriously think it needs a remake because that game looks so damn outdated even for it’s time.

        1. The newer Final Fantasy games look gorgeous but everyone just complains and says it isn’t as good as 7. And I think it will happen again this year. XV will be the most gorgeous and possibly even the best one yet and people will still complain.

          1. Yeah you’re probably right. But I seriously have faith in XV. I never played FFXIII but after playing the older games (FF1,6,4,7) and seeing XIII, I can’t now see why people hated it so much. They literally stripped the game of what made the series good and released it expecting people to like it… Like holy fuck what were they thinking… FFXV seems like the perfect step in the right direction. I think it will make people happy again!

              1. That fact that you can understand the story just from playing the game, the idea of exploring new areas on your own, FREEDOM, the characters and their back stories, the magic systems (since they’re kind of different with each installment), extra sidequests, exploring villages, the fun yet difficult bosses (that sense of accomplishment after beating one is AWESOME), the gameplay, the moral of the story of the game, the emotional scenes, the humor. The majority of this stuff is not even in FFXIII from the reviews I watched yesterday (and a lot too). I heard the game is linear for like over 20 hours… Not only that but then they butchered the summons… There aren’t any villages or towns, all the shops are at save points (WTF), and in order to understand what’s even happening in the story, you have to read the data logs on the pause menu since the game has bad storytelling… Then after all of that they tried making a wannabe-Cloud…

                1. Hey! Don’t you insult Lightning! Lol. But seriously, I don’t think it’s that bad. They’re good games. They’re just “bad” to Final Fantasy players. Well, anyways, the Lightning Trilogy is over. No more of that. Now people can shut up. But they won’t. Cause they’re still whining about that FF7 remake. And when they get it, they’ll complain about what’s different and what got changed. I’m starting to think the Final Fantasy fanbase is unpleasable.

                  1. Agreed. I actually played FF13 to completion and it wasn’t that bad. But it did not feel like a Final Fantasy game, and I think that is why so many people hated it. It was a good RPG, but a bad Final Fantasy.. Now FF13-2 is a different story. That game sucked… Lightning Returns was ok.

          2. I realised that after all these years of reading Internet comments that the majority of these people are just 7-year olds who never even played a FF game.

    1. OMG I am so burnt out on FF7 remakes. They’ve already remade the game seventeen times for every console twice over. Just play one of those versions…

  4. I would take a remake of Crystal Chronicles from Game Cube. I loved that damn game, but I do wish they would have let you have a companion while explorering. I liked the almost Bravely Default style and excellent art detail to the environments. Gah, thats it im heading to Amazon.

    1. I fucking hated that game on GameCube. I was enjoying it for a bit but then I got tired of having to carry that stupid crystal thing around just to move around the area without losing health. What kind of stupid idea was that

      1. If you were playing with other people, then yes, one of you had to carry it around. Otherwise in single player, the Moogle carried it. The idea was that it added more of a sense of danger and awareness since you had to make sure that you were within the shield while dealing with threats. It certainly added another element to the gameplay that made sure you were focused on getting the job done. I understand why they did it, and from a story perspective it fits in too, but at times it was indeed a bit cumbersome.

      2. You never had the moogle carry it for you? I personally loved the game, im looking into buying it today actually : D.

          1. Well to each their own, its really not a big deal buddy! There’s plenty of other Final fantasy’s to choose from!

  5. “a box of surprises” means “surprise it’s for XBO”.

They’ll make games for the PlayStation and XBox consoles and Theaterythm for Nintendo. So, no I’m not exited in wathever they will come up with, it’s not like they’ll make the games compatible to the Wii U.

  6. unfortunately I am not exacted as many say here it probably won’t come to the Wii U (high percentage) but I understand why my Nintendo news publish an article cause it still uncertain.

  7. Everytime Square says they have a surprise game in devolopment I either hope for a sequel to The World Ends With You, or a true sequel to the PSX game Brave Fencer Musashi. ..Everytime I walk away disappointed.

    1. FUCK YOU!!! SERIOUSLY WHAT GAMES DO YOU LIKE!?!? EVERYTIME YOU’RE IN THIS DAMN SITE YOU SAY “OH I HATE THIS AND THAT AND THIS AND THAT” LIKE A LITTLE BITCH!!! DO YOU EVEN LIKE GAMES?!?!? WELL DO YA?!? IF YOU DO YOU HAVE SHIT TASTES

      1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

*is that dog from duck hunt just pointing & chuckling at gamerprince1999* Calm down, dude. He’s the type of gamer that can only enjoy a small segment of video games. Like how certain people can only enjoy one or two movie genres.

  8. C’mon FF IX Wii U or 3DS remake.

C’mon another Bushido Blade, Fear Effect, Parasite Eve, Secret of Evermore, Front Mission, Mario RPG, of Mana, Vagrant Story, Valkyrie Profile, Brave Fencer Musashi, ActRaiser, FF Tactics, The World Ends W/ You, FF:CC: The Crystal Bearers…

C’mon US release of Bahamut Lagoon.

C’mon new IP in the turn-based Strategy RPG genre.

C’mon real Tomb Raider. Lara finally returns to explore, solve puzzles, platform, enjoy or fear moments of quiet ambiance, fight T-rexes, & *gasp* raid tombs.

    C’mon Wii U & or 3DS releases.

Damn. Guess I’ll just have to settle on Bravely Second when it releases here. See? No need for a bloated budget, bloated dev teams, & ever higher stakes @ the expense of new IPs, or for that matter, shelving a shit-ton of awesome IPs to chase hardcore audiovisuals.

But DQ VII 3DS also has a chance of releasing in the US on the 3DS, right? It’ll prolly skip that, too, & only release here on mobile.

I miss you Squaresoft. I miss you Enix. I miss you Square-Enix.

  9. FF XIII is extremely underrated! I agree on many of the flaws already pointed out, but the story was fantastic, so was the battle system. I actually enjoyed every battle from start to finish, which IMO is a rare thing in a Final Fantasy game.

  10. Ridley, the Angel of Death

A true Chrono Trigger sequel or a Wii U remake of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, from the GCN, or I’ll pass.

    1. Ridley, the Angel of Death

Oh & this remake better make the multiplayer more accessible by allowing us to use online servers, damn it!
