Taking A Look At What Went Wrong With Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric Development

This video, made by Liam Robertson from Unseen64, investigates the development of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric to see exactly what its issues were. Apparently the game was being developed with unspecified next-gen hardware in mind, but after deciding to be exclusive to Wii U, they had to port it in a very short amount of time. Watch the video to find out more about the troubles faced with Sonic Boom.

  1. It was never gonna be a good game.

It was made to promote a shitty cartoon to sell t shirts.

    Get over it.

i agree, just by looking at the new designs gives a bad vibe. What has happened to SEGA is a really sad story, they used to be so great and now they arent even a shadow of what they were, SEGA is completely fucked up and thats just sad to see because it means one less good game company in the world…

  2. Is it just me, or do the characters of the Sonic series look dumber as the years go by? Those long legs on all of them look SO stupid!

  3. At least the show is still pretty great. And the redesigns (especially for Tails and Eggman) are good, too.

Sounds like Big Red Button was thrown completely under the bus and SEGA forced them into an impossible situation.

I would be SO ANGRY if I were Big Red Button. No wonder some people quit. SEGA essentially ruined the company’s reputation before it was able to even get off the ground. Hopefully word will spread and the company can show it’s true colors in the next game they create (with ample time).

    1. This game would have failed regardless, even if it had time to be developed. They could even add plenty of updates to make the game better, and it still won’t make it any better of a Sonic game.

Terrible idea from start to finish. SEGA though, still managed to shift 500k copies (Wii U + 3DS) of that festering pile of crap…

  6. The problem is, Sega can’t just drop the whole “entire game has to be new and improved” bit and just make a stinking Sonic game with some new levels!!!! Like, seriously.
There’s an article on IGN about Sonic Boom and what went wrong, one of the developers said they were too overambitious. My reaction? “Duh! You just now figured that out!?”

  7. Ooooh yah it’s the Wiius fault it looks ugly! That’s right, nothing with cartoony graphics looks crisp and colorful on the WiiU.

    1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

If in doubt blame the hardware, lets not gloss over the fact that SEGA have been incapable of producing a decent Sonic for a good number of years now.

        1. Which is nothing more than a celebratory game, not a new design at all and if it was so good, why the fuck Sega went full blown retarded and not build another 3D Sonic game taking after Generation’s formula? Let’s face it, Sega fucked it up and ONLY them.

      1. It wasn’t SEGA who developed the game though. But it was, however,SEGA’s fault for putting Big Red Button in a bad position. And come on,don’t pretend that the Wii U’s hardware didn’t play some part in this

    2. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

I gave a like with the impression conway1993 is being sarcastic with the comment, since Ubisoft & a few others have gone this route with blaming someone other than their own shortcomings with development.

  8. I never thought this game looked good, never understood how anyone did. I even respect a lot of the developers that worked on it, but sadly it was looking pretty bad from the get go. I knew it was going to fail.

Whoever at Sega thought this was a good idea to invest money into, seriously needs to be fired. This is why Sega is broke, they’ve had so many opportunities to use this kind of money towards better games, that people actually want from them, but instead they do dumb crap like this. Trying to milk, already dying franchises.

As much as I loved Sonic games in the past and especially Sonic Adventure, it’s been a long time since there has been a really good Sonic game. So why they thought this would would end any differently given how it looked, is way beyond me.

    1. Reality is Dolphin Revolutionized Cafe NX

      My thoughts exactly!

If they wanted to invest on their flagship IP why not give fans Adventure 3 or game that plays like adventure games? The truth is, Sega doesnt care about gaming anymore, or games. Its all about investors and shovelware games these days, they are moving from consoles to mobile.

Sega is such…. i cannot describe my feelings. Sometimes they announce something that makes me excited about them again, Yakuza games, Pso2, Shining Resonance, stuff like that and then they dont localize them and it dissapoints.

Then they´ll announce new arcade hardware RingEdge, RingEdge2 etc. Makes me hope they´ll port their arcade games to consoles, thats what they were known for in the first place, arcade experience at home, but no. No chance of getting border break to consoles. Heck they could had returned to console race with console based on RingEdge and it could had competed against WiiU easily.

Urhg… At this point im given hope about them, same goes for Konami(Oh god why they didnt make that Contra game for 3DS that they promised or made one for WiiU). Capcom atleast has MonsterHunter and Street Fighter series.

  9. So this was the case eh? I can sympathize with BRB as I’ve been thrown under the bus too to complete certain school projects within a relatively small time frame (one of my teachers was simply irresponsible but doesn’t change the fact my grade will be affected). Doesn’t excuse the design and criticism it received but regarding the technical aspects of the game they, yeah wouldn’t want to be under that bus, lol.

  10. I don’t understand why the 3 games had to come out in 1 year. They had potential to be better games but Sega rushed them to Nintendo consoles. Shadow of the Externals shows how good a CryEngine3 could look like on Wii U. Too bad that game couldn’t be completed

    1. Because they’re goddamn stupid and also, why not make games following closely to Generation’s successful build and feel since the fans loved it? Nope. They just fucked it up after they fix it like a clumsy ass elementary school kid dropping a lightweight of supplies.

        1. SA3 actually has a higher chance to happen than Half-Life 3 which has become a running joke. Valve made it clear they won’t make games for a while which is strange because their games were met with positive reception so why they quit on that is beyond me. Sega would cave and make SA3 happen especially when their last game Forces just tanked their rep even lower despite Mania being very well received and the better alternative. The thing with Sega fandom, they’re tired of the rehashed “Classic” levels and Classic Sonic being their saving grace without giving much other characters a chance plus their so called “plots” is a terrible example of running bad memes and jokes which ironically turned the franchise into a bad joke. The fans are tired of that crap and expect originally THAT ACTUALLY WORKS and a decent story that doesn’t fuck up the Canon some more like Forces and dozens of past games before it since 2006.

  11. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

So Sonic Boom was actually a shitty port from the very beginning of development & was only given a small amount of time to be developed? lol That explains EVERYTHING. That’s what Sega gets for making a game simply to use it as an advertisement for something else. You deserve to die, Sega, if you aren’t willing to do ANYTHING to pull yourself out of the gutter.

    1. Ridley 4 Smash DLC!

Unless going mobile is so they can actually pull their bank account out of the red, so they can return to making great games for home consoles. Only time will tell. Til then, …good luck.

  12. “Next gen game” BULLSHIT because it was still part of Nintendo/Sega Sonic game Exclusive deal which comes with 3 games; Sonic Boom was the last one on their contract. What actually went wrong is that those amateurs at Big Red Button have no fucking idea who and what Sonic is suppose to be about and on top of that, every last bit of its design is so lazy it puts most of other lazy games to shame and most broken games ever made like Sonic 2006.

  13. At least the tone for the Sonic Boom was somewhat more serious then Sonic Colors and Unleashed, too much comedy can be just as bad as pointless levels of seriousness.
