While he didn’t return for the latest instalment, Pat Cashman voiced the iconic Smash Bros announcer in the Wii version of the game. Source Gaming recently got a chance to sit down with Cashman and discuss his role as the game’s narrator. Among other things, he discussed recording content for the game that went unused. While the interviewer did press him for specifics, he claims he can’t remember any particular cut content.
Xander Mobus, the announcer for the newest Smash, explained to us that he had to announce characters that didn’t end up in the final game. Do you remember a similar recording session like that, too? Did you have to announce more than the 39 characters in Brawl?
Yes, I recorded much more than was actually used. The final product is pretty fun—but the process of recording can get pretty tedious. Generally, you’re asked to do the lines multiple times…different inflections…etc…And the session can get pretty long and grueling. There are some characters that were cut from Brawl’s roster and the game’s director has stated that if there were more time we might have seen an extra character or two. Did you remember recording any unused character lines?
Don’t recall. It has been quite awhile, after all. But, I’m certain I did record announcer parts for announcers that didn’t make the cut.
While it is disappointing that Cashman can’t remember any specifics of what was cut, it is certainly interesting that he recorded lines that didn’t make it into the final game. The rest of the interview can be found here.

Meh, I think it would still be a violation of the NDA with Nintendo to report this kind of stuff. I think he’s just lying about not remembering it…. otherwise he’s got a lot of other stuff going on.
Maybe. Remember he doesn’t really have an interest in gaming though. He probably would have forgotten over the last 8 years.
Brawl’s 8 years old already, I don’t think Nintendo or anyone should care if cut material was discussed when the game has no chance of having it implemented anymore. That’d be like if a team made a game and then ten years after its release one of the character artists came out and said “yeah, we had plans for two more fighters, one named Georgia, and the other named Apollo, but we scrapped them because we couldn’t figure out playstyles for them. Here’s 3 pages of their concept designs.”

Kind of a lame move on this site’s part to post a perfectly good interview and emphasize “cut content” when the man can’t even remember what was cut.
I’m referring to this site, btw, not Source Gaming.
They probably cut the story mode. The only thing that would have made this game fun for solo gamers like myself. (- _ -)
Well sucks for you then since Smash has always been known and loved for it’s multiplayer aspects. In Brawl Miyamoto told Sakurai to just focus on the multiplayer but Sakurai was insistent on including a robust single player. Originally Subspace Emissary was going to be outsourced to another company too, but Sakurai wasn’t satisfied, so he decided to work on both the single player/ multiplayer aspects of Brawl.

So…yeah. I don’t think Sakurai could have done two console releases AND a robust single player. Yeah, he said that he was also upset about the cutscenes being leaked (I might be too if I put that much effort into them) but I think logistically he couldn’t do it. OR he found out Miyamoto was right and the multiplayer portion of Smash is the part that people play the most.
I’m not a fan with the single player modes either but I’d rather have the two releases and a expanded much more detailed and worked cut into the roster over another Subspace Emissary (which had amazing cutscenes but mediocre platforming).
Hey, your comment seems familiar! :P

It’s cool though, more people need to know about Brawl’s crazy development.
Just spreading the word-
The original comment that you copied this from was a reply to the collector as well lol
I like how you copy and pasted this but slightly edited it. What a weird thing to do lol
I had to spread the word somehow
Yeah I guess, but I would think the collector would have read the original comment already…
This is talking about Brawls cut content.. it has a story mode.
Subspace Emissary had some scenes that were cut. But I was mainly asking Pat about cut characters. Was hoping to get confirmation on the ‘Forbidden Seven’!
“Forbidden Seven?” I’m guessing these were planned fighters that ultimately got scrapped during development?
We know of Mewtwo, Roy, and I believe Pichu was another fighter, but who else?
mmm…I see…dissapointing indeed that the policy would tell him he can’t say it in public. oh well…moving on.
That’s Xander Mobus, the announcer for Smash for Wii U and 3DS.
We did an interview with him last week. (See the full article on Source Gaming for the link)
Some of them were too obvious to be mentioned, especially Mewtwo and Roy. Not surprised really.

Anyone know why WOLF was cut from the roster. He’s the only character with potential of returning who Sakurai gave no clarity as to why he didn’t.
Does he just not give a shit, or is he so distracted by his Corrin♀ and Bayonetta erection.
My bad. I just realized that this is about Brawl, not SSB4.
