Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman says Zelda film “is going to be huge for us”

Nintendo has a sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie coming soon, but that’s not all. There is also a live-action film for The Legend of Zelda that is in the works. Coincidentally, the Zelda film has been recently brought up a couple of times by Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothma in a new interview with Deadline.

In the interview, Rothma calls the Zelda film one of their upcoming “big IP movies”. He even says that the movie “is going to be huge for us. Massive”. Just one question later, he talks about the film again, saying that “because the movie is being developed and made in the closest possible collaboration with [Nintendo video game designer] Shigeru Miyamoto. He’s a true genius in that world, and it’s really his strong vision that is motivating it. He created it and understands it thoroughly. You only to look at the results of Super Mario Brothers to see”.

  1. I’m an optimist, but I’m also a realist: every one of the big wigs in Sony keep talking about how ambitious this movie is going to be, but they haven’t given us any type of casting, or teasers, or anything to back it up.

I need a little bit more than lip service at this point

    1. Yeaahhhh… trying to be optimistic, but I really can’t imagine a live action Zelda movie coming out good…

      1. The film should be an adaptation of Zelda 1 with a nearly dialogueless plot. A mute boy wanders a wasteland like wilderness, stumbling into anchient temples, solving Indiana Jones type puzzles and riddles and fighting practical effect monsters.

    1. Because we know the history of video game to live action adaptation which more often than not still do not do well.. and when you have a mouthpiece already talking about how huge it’s gonna be when nothing has been cast/released yet, it does not bode well. They’re banking on that cause they know how huge the game is, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to translate to the same for the film.

      1. To be fair, most of the bad LA movies, were the older ones. The last few big ones have been good to great. Mario, Pokemon and Sonic as the 3 great ones, and I would argue that the sonic movies are amazing. It’s also Wes Ball directing it, his last movie was the last Planet of the apes, which is arguably the best live action movies this year so far.

  2. What they should do is there own Zelda timeline and not follow any game in particular. Do there in thing but retain the Zelda core values… like in Link in healing the land.

  3. In this case, I invite you to go and make the film in their place, you will seem to know better than them…

    1. Gladly… ill go for a vintage 80s fantasy look similar to the Never Ending Story. Have strong practical effects, make the Triforce a story driven element, only show a couple of themed dungeons. Make Link an outsider who washed ashore Hyrule with no recollection who he is.

  4. Would’ve liked it if it we’re animated by Studio Ghibli, after seeing a concept video on YouTube it would make sooo much more sense.

  5. This movie is going to suck and it will make Nintendo never release a live action film ever again.

    1. That would be the best possible scenario instead of:

“Video game movies are bad for us. That is all”.

Followed by the only animated productions from Nintendo (aside from in-game cutscenes) being Pokemon Horizons.

  6. Needs to be trilogy. Something Power,Wisdom and Courage. Like lote and Hobbit. Then and only then would it feel bigger than Hollywood.
