Nintendo Wanted Pikmin And Donkey Kong In Super Mario Galaxy 2

Super Mario Galaxy 2 director Koichi Hayashida has told Game Trailers that the team would have liked Donkey Kong and Pikmin to star in Super Mario Galaxy 2, but Shigeru Miyamoto wasn’t too keen on the idea.

“One of the early proposals that we discussed for Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the possibility of including characters from other [Nintendo] franchises. For example, you might have Donkey Kong or Pikmin show up.”

“We presented this to Mr. Miyamoto, but he came down pretty hard, saying that there has to be a functional reason to include characters of a certain type in a game. He went to specify precisely why the Pikmin wouldn’t work.

“In the Pikmin games, you’ll notice that all the Pikmin are very thin – tall and narrow for their frame. Mario enemies tend to be on the short and squat side and there’s a functional reason for that. They’re easier to stomp on. They’re lower so you can get above them and broader so you can land on them. In that sense, Pikmin are just not well suited for the Mario universe.”

Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo Has Tried To Get Super Mario Galaxy 2 On The Nintendo 3DS

Super Mario 3D Land director Koichi Hayashida has told IGN that Nintendo has tested the possibility of putting Super Mario Galaxy 2 on the Nintendo 3DS but found that Mario looked like a speck so the game turned out to be immensely difficult to play. Would you pay good money to play the fantastic Super Mario Galaxy 2 on your Nintendo 3DS?

“When we started developing [Super Mario 3D Land], we displayed Super Mario Galaxy 2 on a small TV monitor and found that Mario looked like a speck and that the game was difficult to play.

“This led us to look into the camera and terrain types that would be conducive to playing on a portable screen with a relatively large Mario. If we were making a console game, from the very start, we wouldn’t have been thinking about any of those things, and I think the game would have probably been a lot different.”

Nintendo Wii: Super Mario Galaxy 2 Receives a Perfect 10 from IGN

Online gaming publication IGN has awarded Nintendo’s latest opus Super Mario Galaxy 2 with a perfect 10/10 review score. Could this become the highest rated game of the year? Only time will tell…

I think the one thing you should take away from this review: Super Mario Galaxy 2 wholly exceeded my expectations. Leading up to the game’s release I hadn’t expected much more than simply “more of the same.” I loved the original Super Mario Galaxy, but the company would have to do something pretty special to really “wow” me.

Consider me “wowed.” Again. Yes, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is more of what made the original so amazingly good: brilliant gravity platfoming. Incredibly tight and responsive controls. Fantastic musical score. But it’s not a “me too” experience — a significant majority of this sequel is brand new. New level challenges, new gameplay mechanics, new (and incredible) orchestral pieces. All done up in a package that streamlines the classic Mario experience: a straightforward presentation, a much more intelligent camera system, and a rewarding progression that opens up some seriously devious and fulfilling level challenges.

Mario has always been a universally appealing game design and Nintendo has done an incredible job to make sure its key franchise is just as accessible to gamers of all walks of life. Most of all, Super Mario Galaxy 2 perfectly captures that classic videogame charm, the reason why most of us got into gaming from the start.
