Nintendo Wii Will Not Be Region Free

Nintendo UK’s General Manager David Yarnton went on record yesterday to announce that the Wii won’t be region free as originally thought.

This report stands in glaring contrast to comments made recently by Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America’s Vice President of Marketing and Affairs who stated that the Wii will infact be region free, something that David Yarnton has since played down.

This news is likely to come as a unwelcomed blow to those gamers who’ve recently enjoyed importing Nintendo Ds titles from both Japan and America, as those two regions tend to receive major titles sometimes several months before us here in Europe.

  1. What I’d like to know is who is right or not. Is Kaplan right or Yarton? I’d like it to be Kaplan, but I suspect our dear NoUK boss is right.

  2. It certainly seems like we are getting conflicting information here, but like you mentioned I’m reasonably sure that Yarton’s statement will sadly ring true.

  3. That’s bloody annoying, I was hoping of getting an American Wii and saving £50 aswell as getting it earlier along with an early TP. I was delighted when I first hearn it was regoin free but now… =(

  4. I’m as confused about this as the rest of you, though I have to say that if this proves to be true and the Wii will infact be region locked then the majority of gamers are going to miss out on the tons of intrestingly obscure Japanese titles that are set for release on the system.
