During last nights developer roundtable Ubisoft producer Adrian Blunt announced that Nintendo will be scrapping friend codes for online play and will instead use a system which is similar to the gamertags found on Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
“Rather than a machine having an account, each individual user has an account,” explained Blunt, pointing out that the system is very similar to Gamertag on Xbox Live, able to “connect players in a much easier way” than friend codes.

Not necessarily. In this quote they were talking specifically about ghost recon. Although having no friend codes at all is likely true, they said they couldn’t release any specifics concerning whether OTHER games would need friend codes or not.
To be clear, im not trying to be pessimistic! I love nintendo, and I really hope it’s true!!!
Finally. Now lets hope they use real money instead of points
Excellent! Let’s hope the same will eventually become true with the 3DS.
Bleh. I prefer Friend Codes… they’re not as easy to hack into.
