Nintendo 3DS: Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D Review

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D offers some of the best visuals seen on the Nintendo 3DS but does it offer you value for money? That was the pressing question I had on my mind when I received the game. After all this isn’t a brand new entry into the Resident Evil series, it’s just the Mercenaries mode which sees you battle as many zombies as possible during a reasonably strict time limit but sold at a recommended retail price of £39.99.

So, how does this game look?

As soon as I started the game’s tutorial I was instantly impressed by the visuals that Capcom had managed to achieve with Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D. The game looks more akin to Resident Evil 5 than Resident Evil 4. The character models are sharp and detailed and show a lot of promise for Resident Evil: Revelations. The main problem with the game lies with the frame-rate which can stutter when you’re overwhelmed by Zombies frantically trying to attack you. It really takes away some of the enjoyment from the game.

What are the controls like?

There no other way to say this other than the controls feel clunky. I wasn’t impressed by the controls in Resident Evil 5 and I’m afraid nothing has changed here minus the fact that you can walk and shoot. The characters feel far too heavy and not nearly athletic enough to deal with the legions of Zombies that are out for your blood. Saying that, the touch screen is extremely handy for quickly changing weapon or using herbs. You just touch the icon and your character uses whatever you’ve pressed. It works really well.

Dammit, this game is expensive.

Agreed. It’s difficult to recommend Resident Evil: The Mercenaries given its high price tag. Overall it’s a short package with a hefty price tag. It does come with a demo for Resident Evil: Revelations, but the said demo is only around five minutes long, so if you’re thinking of purchasing it for the demo alone I’d suggest looking elsewhere. If the game drops to a more reasonable price point then I would have no problems suggesting it.

Closing comments

The game really shines when played online. If the concept of butchering waves of Zombies with a random stranger sounds fun then you’ll enjoy this. Graphically it looks great and it stands as a great visual showcase for the Nintendo 3DS. Would I personally pay full price for this game? The answer is no. It doesn’t offer enough content to justify the price tag. But if you looking for an action packed blaster on your Nintendo 3DS with superb graphics and addictive game-play then it’s well worth considering. Roll on Resident Evil: Revelations.

7/10

  1. I agree with the price but being a long time RE fan I gotta buy this to tie me over till Revelations is out.

  2. I agree with your review, personally I would consider buying it if it was about $20, I mean its basically just an elaborated mini-game.(Which was in RE4 and RE5 for no extra)

  3. I wouldn’t agree with the review being that great, sorry.

There seems to be too many negatives for this game to be a 7 (slow frame rate, limited gameplay, ‘clunky’ controls, low value for money). It just seems like Capcom are capitalising on (or even taking advantage of) the fact that there are very few desireable games available for the 3DS at present.

I found the controls were smooth and nice, and I never noticed the frame rate drop as much as you did.

  6. I have to disagree with you about the controls, I found that the characters moved much easier in this iteration than in RE 4 and 5 – not having to hold a button in order to run, and being able to reload, aim, and heal yourself while moving are very welcome additions.

The graphics can be a let-down, especially with the frame rate of some of the bosses. But the characters themselves look great, and my only gripe there is the roster – including Rebecca or Krauser before someone like Leon or Sheva?

  7. Very good Review! I have the game and I love it, it has bunch of replayability and fun playing co-op.

  8. Good thing this is a 3rd-Party game, because we can reasonably expect the price to go down. If this were a 1st-Party Nintendo game, it would get the $5 dollars off treatment.

  9. I agree 100%. Its a great “show off” game. Way too costly though. I only bought it out of being bored. I feel like I just bought a bonus feature
