EA CEO John Riccitiello has told Games Industry that the company plans to move away from the 3D space as they see very little return on investment. EA are more interested in pursuing the social and online gaming marketplace. Wise choice?
“We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations,” Riccitiello told stockholders at EA’s annual meeting.
“Frankly we have not seen a big uptake for 3D gaming. We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home, at least not yet. We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what consumers are looking for.”
He also spoke about the problems faced by Nintendo’s 3DS.
“It was perceived to be the next big thing, there were complaints about is causing headaches and nausea and all sorts of things. Frankly, it didn’t do that for me, but there were complaints, and it’s not performed as well as they would like.”

I actually agree with this. I mean I love the 3DS but to be honest I never use the 3D feature.
That may be true, but is it’s no excuse for EA not to develop games for the 3DS; it’s been on the market less than 5 months. Saying some people have complained about headaches is not good enough to dismiss the opportunities available with 3DS. I’m surprised at this news, considering John Riccitiello has shown strong support for the Wii U at E3; let’s hope EA doesn’t renege on that console as well. As I said, it’s too early to judge, and that includes myself. So, hopefully with all of the positive news about the 3DS in the past few days, more will accompany soon.
I guess EA couldn’t find a way to over-price it. They only care when they can rob people of their money.

Its called EA actually likes to make a profit. In having the online pass they practically ensure consumers need to buy the game new. Its smart on their part. If gamestop sells a used copy of their game then they don’t make any profit. Gamestop practically takes in all profit from that sale. So EA is trying avoid that by almost forcing people to buy a new game.
You can pay $10 to play online, and they get a profit.
Yeah, that’s great for the people who can afford getting a new game by going to mommy and asking for her credit card. What about the people who can maybe only afford a new game once or twice a year? They’re entitled to buy a used game, and not have to pay a ridiculous $10 just for multiplayer. It’s not “Smart”. it’s disgusting and unfair business practise. EA made over 4 BILLION in 2009. They don’t need the extra $10. It’s just plain, old fashion greed. Nothing more, nothing less.

That said, I am an avid game pirate. I even have an R4 with the 3ds. I was mostly dissapointed by the lack of new IPs on the 3ds though.

its legitimately dissapointing, BUT a very fair point they’ve made. the 3DS ISNT doing too well, regardless of how great it really is, the current perception from its target demographic is that its a headache inducing, overpriced handheld and is just a DSLite with a 3D “gimmick” tacked on. when new games come out like Mario Kart 7, Mario 3DLand, etc then im sure itll pick up somewhat, especially with the lowered price come august 12th. maybe then companys like EA will pick up on it, but for them currently, the risk is too great for them to make that investment.
I think 3D benefits some games, but not others. Super Mario 3D will utilize 3D very well with full depth perception. But from what I hear, 3DS users don’t usually use the 3D anyway.

Actually, Kotaku themselves interviewed Miyamoto, and he confirmed Tanooki Mario will not fly or turn into statue. Which to me renders the gimmick useless. Not to start a flamewar, but if you’re to buy the game for the Tanooki gimmick, you’ll be in for an unpleasant surprise. Personally I would’ve loved to fully use the Tanooki, but alas, this is the reason Mario 3 will still be my top game and the reason I won’t be buying Mario 3D.

I agree, I HATE 3D. I don’t think it adds anything to most movies that use it (except to the price, hawhaw!). I don’t really see why anyone would want a 3D TV; can’t be that cool to see the soccer ball flying at you, and the glasses are just inconvenient. I haven’t played a 3DS yet so I’ll reserve judgment on that for now, but I foresee a majority in gimmicky 3D games and only a couple (likely first party) that truly benefit from it. Main thing is I don’t see it becoming standard in gaming, though.
Done correctly, 3D alleviates a huge array of *gameplay* problems.
It is not about a “soccer ball flying at you”, it is about the ability to actually perceive depth and not have to guess where a target, goal, or platform actually is in relation to your avatar/camera–in time, it will make 3D games as precise as 2D ones. Couple it w/ HMDs and you’ve got ‘you are there’ virtual reality.

Of course 3D TV’s aren’t taking off too well, have they seen the prices?! Coming back to the 3DS, I can see why Nintendo priced it at $250 but it was too early. 3D technology has a lot of potential but it’s just too expensive. The 3DS should have started at $170-$180 & had more titles come out with it/close to it. Just give it time & consumers will start to grow more fond of it. Until then, these companies just have to hang in there.
I don’t think I have actually played an EA game on a nintendo console since FIFA 07 which sucked. Blehhh49 makes a good point too, Nintendo will not let anyone to charge to play the games online (EA Online Pass B.S.) so there is an immediate hit to EA’s profits. I keep my 3D on all the time, except for when the battery is running low and I have not finished what I am doing. F**K SONY!!!!!
I have never gotten a headache using the 3ds, and i always use the full 3d effect. I also play games like SSFIV 3D for 2 or 3 hours at a time, and i don’t get headaches, so i don’t know what all this talk about headaches is

Yep no headaches for me either…I have read that the headache is caused by 1 of three factors 1. Poorley done 3d content 2. You have an eye problem that you might be unaware of 3. Being exposed to 3d for to long of a period time without a break.

I don’t believe there’s much if a reason to really worry. Once the bigger titles start coming out & the price cut comes on the 12th, sales should start to increase. EA just has no patience. Everyone just has to play a waiting game.

I don’t recall Luigi’s Mansion being overused, it’s literally the first sequel it’s ever gotten. In a span of 25 years, Mario and Zelda games (minus cheap spinoffs) don’t get produced nearly as often as people make it out to be. My favorite Nintendo game is Pikmin, and that’s only ever had two games. I’d love a 3rd one.
Yet there are tons of recycled game settings like girtty orange-and-blue glowy space stuff. Or how about all the Call of Duty games? I’m not calling out on those people. Theres no reason to be worried about the 3DS. It’s a unique piece of hardware, and has a lot going for it. But Nintendo tried so hard to make it’s launch based around 3rd parties, that they forgot the most important part about Nintendo consoles.. the NINTENDO games. Oh, and another interesting tidbit. Remember the DS? Well, it’s the highest selling game console of all time, and It had very weask 3rd party support. Besides Scribblenauts, I couldnt care less about 3rd party games.
Just wait until the Holiday season comes around. Most of the games peopleare waiting for are coming out in a few months. After Super Mario, and Kid Icarus, 3DS sales will be higher. And were only in the first year of the 3DS. Everything from Majora’s Mask to Super Smash bros is coming to the 3ds. Even if the 3D wasnt there, the lineup is killer. and nintendo promises never to let soemthing like that happen again. and they mean it.

3D has the same problem as every addition to the gaming industry, and that is that it needs good content that utilizes it or else it’s a gimmick. Using motion control to jump, for example, is a gimmick when the action can just as easily be done with a button press. However in Wii Sports Resort, Table Tennis wouldn’t be nearly as deep and fun if it weren’t with motion control.
3D is just useless when playing Nintendogs Cats. But when playing Pilotwings I got almost all of the levels perfect using the 3D; I did the rest perfect without the 3D ’cause I was lying at an angle and couldn’t use it. But the point is the 3D helped the game a lot.
Yeah… Let’s see what his stance is when the 3ds library grows and it starts selling out stores.

I got the 3DS on launch day and have to say that I’ve used the 3D feature on the Ocarina of Time cut scenes amd very rarely during gameplay. Despite that the games have beautiful and very detailed graphics. There are some fantastic titles due for release at the end of the year, personally I can’t wait :)

Also, if Nintendo is such a “great system”, why are so many games being cancelled left & right on the 3DS, and so many third party developers making more games with more exclusives for the Playstation, rather than Nintendo? You can say that third party support is showing interest in the Wii U all you want, but they also showed the same ”interest” for the Gamecube and the Wii, and look how that turned out.
Funny how the Wii with its shovelware, when announced that third party support might come for their console, they nearly shit their pants with excitement. Guess Mario isn’t enough to entertain…?

Actually I didn’t only say that Playstation only had shooters, but you seem like that kind of person who would only play those games. The Wii obviously isn’t just for casual gamers and does have core games on it, and you’d know if you knew what you were talking about. Shooters are destroying the Japanese gaming industry? You do know that SONY is A JAPANESE COMPANY, right? And that’s why Nintendo continues to sell millions of copies on most of their games right?
You forgot to mention that Nintendo is becoming more friendly to 3rd parties now, that’s why Metal Gear, and Resident Evil are being made for the 3ds and many others for the Wii U.
Mario isn’t the only reason people play Nintendo games, there are many great third parties now looking forward to working with Nintendo in the future. EA and Ubisoft already said they will be working with the Wii U and plan to for years to come.

Nintendo isn’t the only company that does that, All commercials are meant to get you hyped for something. Its called marketing to make money, its a company. All companies do that.
I already also told you that I leave 3d on, which I do most of the time. Satoru Iwata, Global President of Nintendo said, that they only put those 3D warnings on there so just in case somebody complains about it hurting eyes they can’t sue them.

As for recycled, call it what you will: recycled, rehash, reused, re-releases of a game and sometimes adding a few features to entice people to buy.
Some example of this business strategy–because Nintendo loves using nostalgia & childhood instead of relying on new games to sell their system–are:
1. Ocarina of Time
2. Super Mario Bros. for NES – being just one example, has been released for: NES, SNES, GBC, GBA, GC (as an unlock game for Animal Crossing), WII VC and Mario All-Stars… again… lastly a slated release for the 3DS. Don’t even get me started on Zelda. Speaking of rehased, “New” Mario Bros.–which also came out on the DS (damn two recycles within the same five year span)–is exactly that recycling the Super Mario formula and making it a “new” game… remakes gotta love them!
3. Taking Doki Doki and recycling the game but with Mario characters added.
4. Like Zelda, Mario tends to reuse a lot of the game mechanics, for example: Mario 64 = Mario Sunshine = Mario Galaxy = Mario 3DS all the same 3D open world style, with almost identical scene, puzzle and physics, except unlike Mario 64, in Mario 3DS you cant fly *smh*. And don’t even get me started on reusing the same storyline, which you’ll find on ever Pokemon, except Black and White.

Firstly, you can EDIT Wikipedia, for Pete’s sake!! I just said don’t use it when you are defining that word, nothing else (and I love the AVGN and Nostalgia Critic BTW [did you even know that they had a fight between each other {though I saw that they were actually quite nice to each other personally}]). I use it to check up on stuff just in case (though I define words/cite for research papers with websites like Dictionary.com, The Free Dictionary, and sometimes Britannica [when I have to do a research paper], as well as databases) because it’s usually right. Implying negatives about people without proper foreshadowing usually leads to negatives like this.

Thirdly, did you know that Earthbound came to the USA for the SNES? It’s Mother 1 and 3 that didn’t show up (though I might give you the benefit of the doubt that what you meant is what some call Earthbound Zero and Mother Two)! Also, UK is getting Xenoblade, so they are releasing it outside of Japan. Just not to the states (YET).

Fourthly, if you want to go there for that then let me take you for a ride. For the sake of time, I will only mention brief parts of 5 game series:
1. Street Fighter: Uses classic 2d fighting (as in having a restrained field [not like Tekken] {though you could sort of count the EX games as a change to that}). Also, Supers were introduced in SF2 and new rosters. SF3 had you chose your Super Art (or whatever it was called [another name to Supers) before you fight, had EX moves, and Parries. SF4 had focus attacks and Ultras added in as well as other stuff. But the basic game mechanics stayed the same. You see how successful that is?
2. Call of Duty: First Person Shooter. Uses many war time elements. But sticks to a wartime setting and uses FPS game mechanics. You can explain for me what the elements are for the game because I expect that you know that game a lot. Oh yes, I went there. This is still successful for the company that makes this series.
3. Halo: Barring Halo Wars, they were all FPS’s. Regenerating shield was eventually introduced in the series (as well as other suit mechanics). But sticks with same game mechanics (and similar story [though a new threat or battle could be introduced]). Also, the Covenant seemed to be a recurring enemy in the series, as well as the style of the game (futuristic and stuff). Still seen as successful.
4. God of War: Hack and slash game. Kratos gains new items (as well as using previous weapons like the Blade of Olympus) in order to fight the great forces of Greek mythology (though Heracles is the Greek name while Hercules is the Roman name….). But mechanics like how platforming and fight work the same. Still pretty successful if you ask those who played the game (as well as many other who didn’t play the games).
5. Dragon Quest: Oh how I love this game so much (no sarcasm at all)!! They stick with the classic turned based combat, with each character having skills, spells, and items to use. Different story for each main game, but same mechanics. Also, they have spin-off games like Monsters (I bought Joker and I LOVED IT a lot and plan on buying Joker 2 on 9.19.2011), which used many of the main game mechanics, but had some differences (being able to capture monsters for your team [though some of the other games use that] and monster synthesis [where you sacrifice 2 monsters to get a new monster] and Heroes (making a 3rd one for the 3ds. 1st one for GBA. Loved the 2nd one a lot [tank battles are fun]), as well as Swords (didn’t do well compared to others, but was fun). REALLY SUCCESSFUL series!! Just a tidbit: the 1st 6 came to Nintendo consoles while 7 & 8 came to Sony consoles. 9 came back to Nintendo consoles and 10 will be made for a Nintendo console.
Need I say more….
In short, “recycling” is normal for most (if not ALL) gaming companies and series (as well as consoles). You know the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. However, they do add stuff to add icing to the cake. But the cake can still taste good without the icing (in fact, some don’t like the icing). Mortal Kombat has Fatalities in pretty much every game (if not all), so would that be considered Fatalities? Would GoW’s button pressing sequence movies be recycled as well? What about the Crystals from Final Fantasy or the turned based combat in Dragon Quest? What about Resident Evil’s zombies and Mercenaries mode? What about the vs Capcom’s 2v2/3v3 combat system? EVERYTHING HAS SOMETHING “RECYCLED” (if you want to go there by using that term), ONE WAY OR ANOTHER!! Like Wildman says, “recycling is processing used materials into new products to prevent waste of potentially useful materials.”
Remakes are good to have, by the way. They allow people who missed the first game to experience it for the first time and allow people like me to experience the game a second time through a different perspective (different mechanics). Also, these remakes have some glitches, bugs, and cheap tactics (as in, certain game fixed that the 1st one had (though OoT 3d had some just for people to find for fun [like entering Jabu-Jabu’s dungeon as an adult]. By the way, New Super Mario Bros. is NOT a remake. It is an entirely new game (like Super Mario World is to SMB1 [or like how FF13 is to FF1 or Assassin’s Creed 2 is to Assassin’s Creed]).
If you say I have a decimated mind, I sure do not want to see what your mind is like. Respond to this with a sound argument.

I love my 3DS but i dont use 3D anyway, nothing special seriously.
It’s the lack of games that’s knackered up the 3DS at the minute. After loads of different console releases surely it’s the norm to have a couple of killer games on a console release. The eShop is pretty poor at the minute. Looking forward to the free games though. I hope FIFA 12 3DS is still comin out. Think it’s a bit early for EA to drop out yet though.

The DS succeeded just fine with EA mostly making the same schlock they have been making for the 3DS. Western publishers just do not care about handhelds.
I don’t have the time or money for a 3DS yet, but I think it actually could be used for more than a gimmick if applied correctly. Kind of like how motion control could have been used for more than just a gimmick. Not saying it wasn’t, it’s a shame nothing high-budget was going to work in motion control because of fear of people sticking their noses up and refusing to try it.
Same with the 3D. I’ve seen from Pilotwing demos that it really does show 3D has potential. This is coming from someone who HATES the 3D movie fad. It’s related TO WHAT YOU ARE SEEING AND CREATES BETTER FOREGROUND AND BACKGROUND FOR A GAME. I thought visuals and graphics were important to people? Sadly, Nintendo is stuck playing it safe whenever they have a different idea because the gaming culture and general public is not willing to invest and give anything a try thinking they’re “too good for it.” As an animation and art enthusiast who looks at general works, the “if something can be targeted to everyone, it is inferior” argument doesn’t work for me.

I personally like 3d when it’s done right whether that be at the movies on my tv or on the 3ds…3d tvs aren’t anymore expensive than what regular HD tvs were 2 and a half years ago for example I bought a 6000 series samsung tv in 2009 for 2600 bucks and last week I bought a 7000 for 2400 so not only was it cheaper but it has 3d better specs a real thin bezel and samsung apps and it was cheaper than the non 3d lesser model than I bought in 09
I agree, i never use the 3D on my 3DS. Thats another big reason why the 3DS isn’t selling people think without the 3D it’s just a DSi with better graphics, and i’m one of them people.
Well maybe if EA actually put out good content for handhelds… What you put in is what you get, guys. ;)
QUESTIONS:
Is it true that the WiiU has 3D compatibility in it, but just needs to activated… or something like that? I don’t know where I heard that from or if I got it right. If they do have it though, could they choose to remove that and maybe then have a lower cost on the system? Or would it be to late to consider that option? I think I heard that production for WiiU starts around September, with about 100k units to be made each month.

Would Nintendo likely continue games for DS systems for a while yet? I have a DSi XL (which I really like) and there are a lot of great games coming out for it like DQM:J2 & Mass Attack. I’m really unsure about getting the 3DS because I read too many issues about it.
Hardware for 3d is pretty cheap now it’s the software that takes the extra time and money…I think all new hardware should include 3d whether or not the developer wants to utilize it is up to them
oh right, I didn’t think of that. In that case it is good that it’s included, at least then they have the option available if they choose to use it. It certainly would be a nice surprise if they made a 3D game for WiiU like 2-3 years after it’s release, when/if people suddenly really want one on it.

This tom/jake/gonzales (did I miss one?) is annoying me. why go to the trouble of going onto an article just to badmouth whatever is being discussed in the article (and sometimes completely irrelevant things) and start a war between people. We all have equal rights to play what we want to play (I personally am a huge Nintendo fanboy, but I don’t troll sony or microsoft or anything like that. We are all just peopel who share a common interest in gaming and no one should be bullied or teased for it. What people like is their own decision, but never get pressured by lonely trolls to do something. Basically, play what you want to play and don’t be a jerk to those who do just that.

I have to admit, the 3D is kind of just tacked on. I mean, it’s cool, but doesn’t really add anything innovative. Hopefully Nintendo and other third-parties start rolling out the big dog titles, lest te 3DS go the way of the Virtual Boy (remember that “3D” device)

The current economic setting does not see people sharing with the competition, Just eliminating them. I believe that Nintendo, a foreign company that gets a lot of US dollars, is under attack by developers and publishers who have major stock in US dollars and in companies with access to those dollars(Microsoft and Sony). These developers and publishers want guaranteed money for the FUTURE and they don’t want to “work for it” for a lack of a better term. Sony and Microsoft want MORE US dollars. Why not woo the developers and the publishers and make plans to take on the BIG N together. If that is successful why shouldn’t a prominent figure of a publisher or developer make discouraging comments about a system and its company.
Yeah, I hope that the economic problems don’t last much longer. Not so good.

I don’t think it is waste of time. It just needs to be used properly. I am enjoying the 3D on my 3DS. Even I mostly play it in 2D, I find the 3D as a nice bonus.

Well, the 3D is cool, but it isn’t really important to have.
3D. It’s a nice enough experiment though. If ever it becomes tiring, there’s always the option to just turn it off. So I’m cool with that. Though I hope they release games that rely on and utilize the 3D as opposed to just having games that can be played with or without 3D.
Now whether you consider it a gimmick or not, Nintendo likes to take those and polish out gems, so ultimately I’m not mad at them. They’re quite daring.
All you get in 3DS are 80% recycled old game library so this hardware is a no no for serious gamer. If you are a kid then get 3DS, otherwise get Vita. Also, why won’t nintendo extend the 3DS screen until the very edge because from the look of it, Nintendo are saving some space on the screen bevel and it’s a waste.
