Nintendo: Atari Believes They Have The Edge Over Nintendo

Bizarrely Atari digital publishing SVP Owais Farooqui is under the impression that the failed hardware manufacturer has the edge over Nintendo. Farooqui claims that Atari has two major advantaged over Nintendo, firstly it doesn’t have any investment in hardware and secondly they are focusing a lot of time in the mobile space.

“Compared to Nintendo, we have two advantages: We don’t have an investment in hardware, and we’re fully committed to supporting iOS and Android. And our games target older males and females, which as you know are big consumers in the casual space. It’s a big opportunity.”

    1. I’m not invested in hardware either and this one time I played Angry Birds on my phone. I must have the edge over Nintendo too, right guys?

        1. as much as i’d love to bash atari for saying this, i’m not gonna. since nintendo probably would never had been a video game company without the video game industry being introduced, which was mainly atari that did so, i have my respect for atari. i can say, however, that making you own hardware is certainly to be ashamed of, and there’s certainly much shame for being a mobile phone-only developer

          1. Actually that is where you are wrong Atari did not make video games popular a game called Space did and than Atari stepped in. As a matter of fact many people didnt game until Nintendo came out with the NES! BTW I do know this stuff because I did a report on the history of video games which includes which companies were in and who came out with what first! Space was a Arcade game not an Atari game!

            1. Actually “Computer Space” did not make video games popular. It was widely considered too hard to learn to play. Even its creator admitted it was a failure due to its learning curve. The only places it had success was college campuses with people at arcades and bars rejecting it. Atari’s “Pong” was the first video game to actually see commercial success and is widely considered to have led to the start of the video game industry. The Video Game Crash of 1983 severely hurt Atari. The crash of 1983 led to the demise of the Atari 5200 which was released in mid 1982 and discontinued in 1984. The crash caused the demise of Atari as it was never able to regaine its popularity. The NES came in 1985 and was able to take the industry out of its slump. With its release and success it basically sealed the fate of Atari. This led to the rise of Nintendo and Sega becoming the prominent names in Video Games until the mid to late 1990s.

          2. Yea dude, the gaming industry was DEAD until Nintendo came along. They shaped the industry and made it popular again. Without Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft would only be half as rich as they would probably not have gone into the gaming industry. Nintendo constantly lead the way for other companies to follow – more like copy – and was always creating new and exciting games to make gamers say “Wow!”. If Nintendo never made a console in America nobody today would even know what Atari is. Sure Atari deserves some respect because they did do SOME significant things in the gaming industry, but most of that respect they do deserve deserves to be taken away from them because of this statement.

            1. I’ll have to agree with this. Nintendo actually created a lot of what games are today. Nintendo is responsible for analog sticks, rumble packs, shoulder buttons, the d-pad, and(I think) touch screen gaming. I think that the other systems are good but they need to have some more respect for Nintendo. After all, imagine where they would be without them.

  1. LOLWUT?? ATARI THINKS THAT THEY GOT NINTENDO BEAT?? Omg that is just rich, I literally lol’d when I read this.

  2. “And our games target older males and females, which as you know are big consumers in the casual space. It’s a big opportunity.”

Ya, because Nintendo totally didn’t just dominate the casual market with their last console. Makes total sense.

  3. 2008 was a great year for mobile gaming because Java was at its peak and people were developing left right and center. People (who have a smart phone) are more concerned about updating Twitter, Facebook, etc. than they are about passing time gaming. Does anyone remember when being bored meant playing video games and not tweeting about it?

  4. They may have advantages, but that doesn’t change the fact that nintendo are in fact still alive, contrary to them.
As much as I have enjoyed some of atari’s work, this is just laughable

  5. Atari isn’t half as good as Nintendo is. Mobile games aren’t that great. Awesome games are on consoles. and making hardware is an advantage to nintendo, since you can make a lot of money if good decisions are made. I agree that Nintendo lately are not doing as great but they probably will regain their status

  6. I, too have an edge over Nintendo. I don’t have an investment in hardware either, and I’m fully committed to supporting Android.

  7. iOS and Android? What a joke! Hey Atari can you focus on making a console that plays games that have better than a 16-bitrate?

  8. Atari is too funny, go ahead and nose dive into the android market for all we care. Now your really not part of the game industry, just a figment of the past.

  9. Atari is great (Well, USED to be great), but they are certainly no Nintendo. I don’t think anybody can or will be as well-known or quality as Nintendo… or for a matter of fact, I don’t even think Atari can beat Sony or Microsoft. That statement is an absolute joke… No offense.

  10. What is Atari even making these days? Oh yeah, they’ve got a cool version of Yar’s Revenge on Facebook…and they went to another company to make it. So what advantage are they referring to?

  11. Well Ninty kills in the casual department, so actually it’s (arguably) one advantage. Here’s some of Ninty’s advantages over Atari:
Nintendo has Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, etc etc etc etc
Ninty is one of the biggest and most recognizable companies in gaming
More than 4 people care about Nintendo or are aware of anything they’re doing
    It’s not 1979
The Great Video Game Crash of 1983 occurred
    Shigeru Miyamoto

    Just to name a few

  12. Wow I love how Nintendo and Apple just let competitors talk smack and and never say a word about their products. Then they kick their asses!

  13. Since when was your last even slightly successful console? 1977, Atari 2600? I can name one, big advantage Nintendo has: Nintendo isn’t dead.

  14. Atari’s attitude is like they decided themselves to no longer have hardware, instead of being forced out of business by poor decisions and hardware that couldn’t effectively compete. Gaming has long since evolved from the early days of arcade where the games were similar in their simplicity to the majority of today’s smartphone games. Just because Nintendo isn’t top dog doesn’t mean they fail as a company.

  15. Nintendo has two major advantaged over Atari, firstly it has investment in hardware and secondly they aren’t focusing any time in the mobile space.

  16. 0.0

    What???

Yeah he’s tripping on some hardcore acid. Nintendo has always been better than atari. Even if atari made some decent games or helped sponsor beast games. They still have nothing on nintendo.

  17. this is so laughable really. atari are deluded to think they are better than nintendo.

the atari debacle in the late 70s, early 80s killed the video game market. nintendo stepped in, rescued it and they are still here 30 years on.

btw, the atari lynx and jaguar bombed big time.

  18. Anything I can think of to say about Atari would be too obvious. Besides, it looks like most of you beat me to it.

  19. What a stupid thing to say, Atari. You are the reason video games went to shit back in the 1980’s…then the NES came out and fixed that. Now you are contributing to cell phone games, aka, “the new shit,” while stating that you have some sort of advantage over Nintendo…

    Stop being stupid, Atari.

  20. um… dude they’re freaking atari! they failed at making consoles after the 2600 and ever since then they’re games have been pretty crappy. atari has nothing. why would they even say this.

  21. 2 Questions, Atari.
    1)What are you smoking?
    2)And can I have some?

Atari needs to take a cue from Sega, move in the background and keep your mouth shut. You don’t saying stupid shit like this.

  22. that statement is coming from the company who made the jaguar, so it shouldn’t be taken too seriously. And who has the edge on software sales? By far nintendo, i dont even think atari is in the top 20.
