Apple claimed that the iPod Touch is the worlds most popular gaming device during its press event which took place yesterday. It’s clear that it’s an extremely popular device amongst consumers, but the worlds most popular gaming device? I’m not too sure on that one.

Yes, but I hope the car don´t mix things better than the blender… Nintendo is cheap – If they make a whole system with the sole purpose to play game it´s kind of sad that they don´t make it a more powerful system. Or in other words – if they build a blender , make the knifes sharp enough to blend.
3ds plays games fine…I’m satisfied with gamecube/wii graphics on the 3ds they are making really good looking games on the 3ds…not so much on iPhones and iPods because the damn tech changes every year. Plus no buttons I have yet to see anygame on a iPhone/touch that is as big as oot …. My smart tv plays games and so does my dish network but you never read any articles saying tvs and cable/dish companies are killing of the console.

Anyone can make a very powerful system with a long battery light. The question is, is it going to be cheap or what is the design going to look like? The 3DS has to power two screen; one is a touch screen and the other is in 3D. Not many people bought the system at $250, and the difference in game prices is too big to compete with cheap apps. Anyone remember that sega portable system? Very powerful and it practically s**tted on the GB, but it also used I think six AA batteries that got drained fast.

The iPhone 4s has the same processor as an iPad -_- it’s probably more powerful than the vita. Hell the device probably will cost more than an iPad without warranty, like most smart phones. Ever wonder how come pc games don’t look much better than console games even though a gaming pc costs much more? It’s because a console is a uniform device, and after 6 or so years of making games for one console, you know exactly how to get the best out of it. PC components change every year so the devs have to adapt to new tech every year, hence never really exploiting the full potential.
It’s the same with iOS. The components may be better, but they’re pricier and they won’t be taken full advantage off.

It is a gaming device and works well even without any physical button. I got my ipod touch last year for music but then was quite suprise with the number of games available (very cheap sometimes free) and ended using it primarily for gaming. Touch can really work well actually for rpg, racing, and even fps albeit it feels rather awkward at first. Most of the games are crap though but may appeal to the ‘casual gamers’

Apps do not count as games. You could go into a high school programming class and come out with more innovative, better designed games than most of the popular apps. Angry Birds? Please. those games aren’t full retail games which is why they cost 5 bucks. Lower quality, shorter game length, very repetitive, etc. So in a sense it’s still an app

Not a single true gaming platform could ever convince those “non” gamers to buy. But Apple’s iPod Touch does much more, for not that much of a price difference.

Since the iTouch is more than just a game player (since it after all is primarily a music player), I imagine a lot of people keep their iTouchs for things other than the gameplaying. Somehow, Apple tends to twist this logic into saying “People keep their iTouchs, therefore they must love gaming.”
Sales data obviously shows that the most popular and consistently accessed apps are from the “games” section of the iTunes App Store. There is indeed truth to Apple’s words, as much as I hate to say it.

There are 67million Game Centre accounts over the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Even if the iPod has the largest share of those three, it won’t be enough. It’d rank about sixth, below the DS (with around 150million sales), Wii, PSP, 360 and PS3 (with around 53million sales) in that order.

It seems the lines between True gamers and casual people using ipod apps to kill time is shown to not exist to the average consumer. Therefore, Businessmen on their way to work playing that… what was it…. That game design that was recycled over 9000 times about catapulting and then knocking over stuff… Therefore classify themselves as gamers, and try to argue that you may as well have a music player and gaming device in one.

i bought street fighter 4 3D, ridge racer, and monkey ball at launch’ ive average about an hour between all of em, see, when playing a game its pretty much preferance, on my ipod ive only enjoyed Auditorium and the Zenonia games, ive poured hours in them, i got em fr free but even at $10 they wouldve been wortg it, but with ridge racer sf4 and monkey ball i felt ripped off

On SF4 i played online for many hours.
My most played game is DOA Dimensions ranking 45 hours.

Yeah because the future of gaming is with phone games, right? I don’t remember anyone buying a phone just to play a game that is exclusive to that phone. Apple is way too full of itself. Not to mention, the games on the ipod touch aren’t even made by them, but by consumers. It’s not Apple that’s good at making games, (which are free, so it’s easy to see why they’re popular), but random people. So they pretty much just made the gaming device, and didn’t even make games for it, which are only fun for about 10 minutes at a time. So way to go, Apple.
The iPod Touch isn’t a game machine at all. It is just a glorified MP3 player that happens to play games. Games that are sometimes fun, but don’t really immerse the player in the experience. They’re too shallow for my liking. They usually just take one’s mind off of life for 5 minutes at a time. Those aren’t games to me. They are just simple (yet effective) time wasters.
Can I see numbers? Not overall iPod touch sales, but sales of separated generations and not all of them grouped together. Also, I want statistics of how many people buy games for it and actually play them. Every one in my family, except me, has an iOS device. They got a lot of games for it, all of them free apps, and in the mix they got games that they have never played once. My brother play a cards game only because he gets to talk to other girls. They don’t play those games because they’re amazing or anything; it’s because they’re easy to get and disposable. So how many people actually play to no end on those devices? I can say that people with DS games got played, and the numbers indicate that DS units have sold a lot.

Well the reason they say that is everyone with and apple ipod touch/iphone has games on it. It may not be the best gaming device but technically it is the most popular portable system with games on it.
That headline is true, only because it is missing one key word: ‘dedicated’. As in ‘dedicated portable gaming device’. The ipod is also the standard for music players, which is obviously more widespread than portable gaming. Not everyone has an iphone, but a lot of folks got an ipod touch last year for a gift or from some contest, or bought one to play their music. All it takes is for enough of those people to spend a buck on an app to make that claim true.
It’s much more impressive to see a company like nintendo build games in house and recruit and satisfy tons of loyal fans for what is(and what will be) decades on nothing more than the strength of their hardware and software, as opposed to a company that succeeds by offering a hundred different services on the same device, and a 0 average overall experience.
After having an iphone, a cell phone, a ds, dsi, and a 3ds, i’d rather have a game device, and a phone. I’m ok with my acting as my phone, my music player, and hell, a gps too, why not…. BUT THAT’S IT. The reasons have been posted on here a thousand times in a thousand different ways by many others.

I mean, he was the one behind the iPod, iTouch, iPhone, and iPad. The only recent product he had nothing to do with was the iiPhone 4S, which was also the only iPhone to be snubbed by the public at announcement.
I don’t think it is the most popular gaming device since most people don’t buy it as a gaming platform. It’s just a shallow comparison like the “OS X / windows 7” comparison, you just can’t compare the growth of os x with windows 7 bucause w7 has a much bigger install base and a new license for windows is always more expensive than just an update to OS X. You can’t compare the iPod/iPhone/iPad to a gaming console because POEPLE DON’T BUY THEM EXCLUSIVELY TO PLAY GAMES.
It’s funny how they say this…then Steve Jobs dies. Nintendo probably smote Apple down for saying such a stupid thing.
Though it has some cool minigames and overall it’s a great product, it can’t be compared to the likes of the Nintendo DS, 3DS, and PSP…Pretty sad about Steve Job’s death though. =/

not very comparable….i use my ipod touch an average of 4+ hours a day all together..from listening to music at the bustop,to watching youtube videos at lunch at school to playing games at lunch and on the bus home and at nite plus other things…if all you nintendo fanboys can think of is angrybirds then you need to learn more about what you are arguing about first. i dont even have angrybirds but i do use the games alot. i’d say about 9/10 people at school uses an ipod touch for apps. the last time i used my dsi/3ds was like in june i think…but other than that you can really compare much

1. It started out as a portable music player, then they started adding games, then internet, so they copied DS then laptops/computers.
2. The games on it are stupid crap apps that arent even based on real stories like the legend of zelda, (except for angry birds).
3. they are WAY more expensive than DS
