The Legend of Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma has revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was originally meant to be played using buttons. Aonuma stated that it was only after Hidemaro Fujibayashi suggested that he use Wii MotionPlus that the precise Wii Remote sword swinging came into play.

can’t they leave the optio open? i can get real tired of mo ctrl
Yea, but Nintendo knows people will automatically opt for that. I’m confident that the controls would be good, but I agree it can get a bit annoying.
no they can’t. you’d have at least 10 different button combinations for different attacking directions plus a button to hold the sword up plus buttons for the shield.
Twilight Princess was fine. Wind Waker was fine.
neither one had enemys nor puzzles that require precise sword slices. this game was built on and around motion controls and you can’t simply go back to buttons after developement.
Exactly. It’s like playing Spirit Tracks with a PS2 controller.
You’re not thinking hard enough.
If it was like Twilight Princess, then I guess they would. However, they incorporated Motion+ to the sword fight and to the puzzles, so they can’t just map it to buttons.
Yeah, the sword swings in Twilight Princess were kind of like pressing buttons to do so. I just settled with the Gamecube version because the Wii controls weren’t that great: no camera controls and you can’t do consecutive spin attacks.
The closest equivalent you would need for button control would be using the right analog stick on a typical dual analog controller to swing your sword, and even then, that’s even less intuitive, considering the fact that most people would use the right analog stick as a camera before using it to swing a sword. The point is, a traditional control setup would make many of the movements very “digital”, as in, the game does the movement for you when you press the button. For example, pressing B in Wind Waker will make you swing your sword in the default horizontal position, whether you wanted to or not. With motion control, however, you have more control over whatever movement you have in the game; thus more “analog,” you can say.
This seems like it was probably early in the concept stages of the game’s development, considering how much of the game is built around the Motion Plus technology.
how much of the game is now*
Most of it, actually. Regular reports from Rich George have indicated you won’t want to go back to the Twilight Princess scheme after this, so there’s really nothing to worry about.
Miyamoto himself said that he can’t imagine doing Zelda any other way after Skyward Sword. He’s been trying to work in a more realistic sword experience for years. I for one am very excited for this. Nintendo generally does an excellent job with it’s use of motion controls. Can’t say the same for their 3rd-party developers though…
Red Steel 2 was pretty good.
Certainly better than RS1. :P
I tried out Skyward Sword at New York Comic-Con this past weekend. From what I played, the motion controls were really intuitive and I really got into my battle with Ghirahim. I remember hearing Miyamoto almost gave up on a motion-controlled Zelda, but then Wii Sports Resort came out. At least I’m okay that they’ve opted for a much more innovative control scheme.
Good thing they opted for the motion control.
Thank goodness they opted for motion controls, I’m really liking the look of puzzles and enemies needing specific slices to be solved. You just can’t replicate that with buttons.
WHAT?!
It’s a good thing they changed to the wii motion plus controls. If you’re not using the Wii to it’s full potential then what was the point of making it. Skyward Sword is a good way to end off the year with a big title that uses the Wii controls effectively before Wii U. If Nintendo had made SS just like Twilight Princess there would have been nothing new about it.
tis sooooooo old!!
Shwaaa?
That’s inte
Haven’t try with motion plus control before, this will be first hopes everything OK.
Actually the news isn’t new either. But whether the mo ctrl be epic or bs will see on next month.
Still SS’s color really an eye candy to me.
I thought Miyamoto made this clear when they introduced the game at E3 2010. Might as well say it again and more straightforward, I guess.
I saw so much potential in the Wii Sports Resort dueling game that Zelda was always the next logical step. It’ll also be a use for my motion control add-on. Hoping it’s still in the place I left it, as haven’t used it since Sports Resort. Should make sure to have a few games in Resort again while waiting for LoZ to arrive by post.
I’m glad they went with motion plus. We all know we don’t need to make exaggerated movements to swing Link’s swords, but the precision and the direction of the attacks will be awesome.
I still have mixed feelings about it and that e3 demo was not helping prove it’s accuracy. I can only judge when I get my hands on it.
