Asif Khan, CEO of Panoptic Management Consultants has told Industry Gamers that Nintendo has basically been left for dead by investors who’re clamouring for Nintendo to make games for smartphones. Khan also commented on Shigeru Miyamoto, claiming that the legendary games designer’s eventual departure from the company is inevitable but it may not make a substantial difference to Nintendo.
“Nintendo has been left for dead by investors this year. It would be a bigger story if Miyamoto left to work for Microsoft.”
“The man is 59 years old, and eventually all people retire and/or die. The mark he has left on the video gaming industry will not disappear overnight. Nintendo has international brands and a playbook for how to exploit them; if you think that one man is responsible for their success you are very mistaken. He said in his interview that he has been preparing his younger developer to take the reigns for some time now, and I take him for his word. Steve Jobs put together a great team to achieve the success we have seen at Apple, and I have no doubt that Miyamoto and Iwata have done the same. Nintendo has been around since 1889, and I don’t think they plan on rolling over and dying even if that is the consensus in investing and media circles.”
Interesting.
I called it first. I’m the Next Miyamoto. *buys ticket to japan*
lol who you tryin to kid? no offence or anything…
This is news?
Miyamoto is like Christopher Nolan: he works behind-the-scenes and directs everything, but he does very little, if any, of the actual work. It’s the programmers, writers, artists, etc who do the grunt work.
I’m glad that he’s training a new generation of people to take his place directing the games; I hope they can provide as good of guidance as he does.
I’ll just say this.
m night shyamalan the last airbender. Yeah I just wrote that.
That’s true, he messed it up with his direction. But the actors weren’t good (not his fault), the special effects were great (not by his actions), and the story was harpooned (the fault of the writers and him).
If nintendo stars making smartphone games it would really cheapen their brand. Super Mario Android Land sounds tacky as hell.
yeh… it would be awful as smartphone games suck anyway.
Thats why i have a 3DS as my main portable and a cheep phone. All i want a phone to do is text and call… nothing more.
Yep, the same goes for me. It’s a lot cheaper that way.
smartphones are the future cry faggots kissass ninty fags! say any clever bullshit but ONCE MIYAMOTO DIES NINTENDO IS FINISHED. XBOX GAMES ARE APPS AND IPHONE>3DSHIT BECAUSE EVERYONE OWNS 1 WHY? CUZ IT DOES EVERYTHING. XBOX=FUTURE. DIE MIYAMOTO DIE, NINTENDO DEATH IS NEAR ONCE MIYAMOTO DIES ITS OVER XBOX FTW!
Losing troll is losing xD
Miyamoto is Do-It-Yourself-ing?
…What
Also xbox is shit.
Nice trolling 4/10
If Nintendo starts making smartphone, they will have awful graphics, horrible lag, easy AND short.
Your suggestion is full of flaws and is the worst idea i’ve ever heard.
That’s like asking Apple to make a Microwave.
Never say that to anyone, NEVER!
Not to mention the horrible price, knowing if is going to be an overpriced piece of crap just like any Apple product.
your ignorance is funny. it made me laugh.
Explain yourself.
how about Microsoft making microwaves!! :P
Your food would be cold because the Microwave got an update and it needs to restart automatically.
good one hahaha
Super Android Bros
Sounds cool :)
Miyamoto’s influence stretches quite far really. Just look at someone like Dylan Cuthbert for example, who worked with Nintendo on Star Fox and you see those Miyamoto influences in some of his Pixeljunk games.
And that’s just one example of someone who was only with Nintendo relatively briefly, I’m sure there are plenty there now who have been learning from Miyamoto’s genius for years.
Please. Lauren Faust left My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic after one season but that show is still going strong and is only getting better. Nintendo is so much more then just. Mr. Miyamoto. He’s simply one of many great men and women working for the company. Nintendo will do fine even if they aren’t top dog.
Nintendo at 1889? There is either a typo or I want to check the 1920’s games :P
They started by making japanese playing cards. Its called hanafuda. Thats about all I know. Games aren’t always on a screen.
>Games aren’t always on a screen.
Love it!
Yeah i love that too…
yeah even then they copy americans
Nintendo made playing card at one point, google honafuda cards.
there was they made trading cards and stuff no video games
Nintendo HAS been around 1889, where they made Hanafuda cards
Nintendo has been around quite a while, before the video games we know and love today, they made card games some of which are available at Club Nintendo
No Nintendo was originally a trading card company then gradually moved onto toys the arcade then to the great NES the rest is history
Here is all the info of Nintendos long history.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo
thats the difference between nintendo and other companies. miyamoto adores his job and lives to create magnificant games and to see nintendo prosper. a trully legendary man :D hes not working for the money, he works because he loves video games and he loves nintendo, as a result, he is voluntarily making an effort to pass on his wisdom to the youth to ensure nintendo remains as amazing as ever :’) thank you miyamoto, u will go down in history
amen
If you ever compare Miyamoto to scum like Jobs again, I will hunt you down.
I wouldn’t judge Jobs so harshly, it’s not his fault that people use his devices as serious gaming platforms.
Just another fucking fanboy, get the hell outta here and never comeback, shithead.
I agree. Apple fan boys can be so bothersome
If you are talking to me, well genius i will tell you a little secret, i don’t own any Apple product, and i dislike Apple with all my heart.
Must be a fanboy. You have proven nothing.
Then how do i prove i’m not?
Totally agreed! Miyamoto is a very important member of Nintendo, but that doesn’t makes him an indispensable person. I’m really excited to see how the games from the new developers are going to look like now, because you have to be really good to be chosen by Miyamoto to continue his legacy.
Oh, I almost forgot, F**K INVESTORS!
Investors can really help keep a company alive (not saying that nintendo is dying…yet), so dont say ” F-CK EM”. They’re important
This.
I understand what you’re saying, but I get mad that they get involved with Nintendo and instead of believing in the company they go away once a little problem appears… >:/
But I do know the importance of investors :)
Nintendo will never die, the DS practially PRINTS money
in my eyes he’s soley responsible for the failure of Skyward Sword. if it failed which it did in my eyes.
1/10
I added you 1 point just for admitting you are a troll.
im not trolling. i fucking hate skyward sword. and its been confirmed that he was the person who implemented all the stuff i hate in it.
I guess you cant have 100% people liking a game. Its fantastic!
Since you r are a troll, everything and anything you say is not true at all.
i actually got my name from some1 in the comments a couple posts back cause some1 said after i admitted to trolling “omg why would u have a 3DS if you troll?” and it was just the most stupid thing i had ever read in my life and some1 replied “…im siding with the troll who owns a 3ds” and it just stuck…anyways kiss my ass its true that i hate Skyward Sword.
If THAT’S the case, ok, go ahead and hate Skyward Sword, no problem with that anymore.
he’s not leaving, he just wants to be in the game developing department rather than the supervising department.
What the hell are you talking about, go find the Miyamoto retire’s news and stop posting stupid shit like this.
Actually, this comment is entirely accurate. Go get some friends and stop posting smart-ass comments that just make you look stupid.
read the other post miyamoto said that he is retiring FROM BEING THE SUPERVISOR he is doing so because he want to develop the games
If you could read, you would’ve realized he ISN’T leaving. Since he is revealing a new IP in 2012, don’t you think it would be hard to do so if he didn’t work there. He wants to focus on smaller projects and work on what made him fall in love with games in the first place.
@zackchimps19
@jake
@Aaron
Yep, you are right.
Looks like i screwed it, like the shithead i am.
Damn.
Oh yeah and one more thing.
@zackchimps19
>Go get some friends
THIS is the reason why trolls enjoy trolling
Not me, trolling is boring.
Artists are born a lot, their potential? We will not always experience, on Miyamoto we fortunately did:)
That the key. After College I plan on being a Second Party Developer for Nintendo just like how GameFreak is only creating games or Retro Studio for them.
Hope you succeed. Looking forward to your work.
Nintendo was basically dead after world war II (man, they even went into the love hotel business!) and two men were basically responsible for its huge success: miyamoto and gunpei yokoi. The latter is dead, the former is clearly doing less and less as the industry shifts rapidly to new areas. Will Nintendo be able to stay relevant? I actually understand investors skepticism.
In Japan the “love hotel” business is not looked down upon as it is in other countries. They treat the women with a certain level of respect even though they are essentially prostitutes. Just the fact that a company could go from the “Love hotel” business to making video games the whole family can enjoy, becoming one of Japan’s trademark and most respected companies shows how different their culture is from ours.
We could learn something from them.
He might not be as important now, but he had a major role bringing Nintendo up to what it is today. If Miyamoto never started Mario or Zelda in the first place, where would we be? I don’t want to live in that world.
I kinda agree with you, i mean is like Saturi Iwata, without him, Nintendo would be doomed, he knows what people want, i like that about him, too sad some gamers can’t casual games.
I agree with this. Surely, Myamoto created icons for Nintendo like Zelda and Mario, but he now oversees the development of those games; he doesn’t directly develop them because he has a lot of games to revise. Most people who play those games don’t even know Miyamoto exists. He did a lot though.
Compared Jobs to Miyamoto? I will disregard this, Nintendo knows how to survive. While it is ridiculous to think that Miyamoto singlehandedly made the company what it is today, he did contribute A LOT to it’s success. Steve Jobs? Pft. You got to be kidding me.
Just think of Steve Jobs as the Miyamoto of computers and phones. Yes, he DID contribute a lot
Well, Steve Jobs did contribute a lot for Apple’s success. They were in the shitter before his ideas. Now that he’s gone, you’ll see Apple go back to the shitter again.
It will be interesting to see how all of this unfolds. I wonder what Miyamoto’s cooking up over there.
At least he has a legacy for everyone to remember him by: Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, etc.
I kind of agree with the article linked. Yes Miyamoto has done a lot for Nintendo in the past (and even today), but the company would keep on doing quite well even if he announced he was leaving the company tomorrow. There are plenty of other good Nintendo game designers/developers/producers there that aren’t Miyamoto.
It would be nice if people could maybe not compare Nintendo to Apple though. They’re just two very different companies.
So… this article suggests Nintendo would’ve been able to succeed without the likes of Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, Pikmin and Wii Fit (blazing commercial success, remember) populating their library?
eheh yeah no
no it suggest that if the man who has created those franchises leaves much wont be lost as there are others suitable to create more amazing franchises
Wtf?! He is the savier of nintendo In the early 80s late seventies nintendo was on the verge of bankrupty but shigeru saved nintendo and made nintendo amazing! Nobody has ever been able to reach the potential miyamoto has! He is a legend, he would be the best ceo of nintendo and don’t say he’s to old! The ceo before iwata was a lot older! And he still managed to create success for nintendo!
This
It’s weird that he credits Iwata for the success when it was really Hiroshi Yamauchi.
