EA Considering Introducing Subscriptions To Games

Patrick Soderlund, head of EA Games label has told Venture Beat that the company is pursuing the idea of introducing subscription based services for some of its forthcoming games. Activision has already attempted something similar with Call of Duty Elite, and EA games could follow the same path.

“I think it’s fair to say that we’re looking at that. Like all other companies, we’re looking at how we can maximise our investment in this and get the most out of our investment and get more people playing this product. That may take us to different places, but we’re not really talking about where that is yet.”

    1. Haha guess I was wrong. Anyways gotta prepare the battlestations for the haters that are bound to reply. Oh and I won’t do this again. This is my first and last time.

      1. Putting “Not First” when you are first is the sign you are a yellow-bellied cowardous fuck, whose balls are so small, they are consumed by flies before we have a chance to step on them.

Have the balls to say “first”, so we can kick the bloody hell out of them when you are wrong. Then, at least, you can drop to the floor screaming like a man.

Yes I’m mad bro. (not furious, just regular mad)

  1. They can count me out. I already don’t care for their games, so this is at least a reason for me to not reconsider. Thanks EA for making the decision easy.

  2. “Maximize our investments, take is different places…” blah blah blah, all I heard was “Let’s see how we can suck more money out of our loyal gamers”

  3. I think subscriptions could work well with games that support DLC. That way people wouldn’t have to pay so much for stuff that probably wasn’t truly deserving of the money. But with a subscription, all of that extra content can be all-inclusive.

    1. If I payed $60 for a bunch of map packs, I’d want to still be able to play those maps in 4 years without having to continue to pay.

      1. If I payed 60 bucks I wouldnt want to spend another extra 60 bucks for something that is already encoded on the disc.

  4. Any game with a recurring subscription is one less that I’ll play.

I MIGHT buy an all-access pass for all future DLC… but that’s a big “Might”.

  5. Yeh, because paying forty quid isnt enough.

I can agree with fees for games like WoW etc, but standard console games?

I also do not agree with games that ask you to pay forty odd quid and THEN a monthly fee to actually play it…

  6. I am soooo against this idea. I wont be supporting EA if they really go thru this crap. What the gaming world is coming to huh?

    Get N or get OUT!!!!

  7. If more games start Sub’s then I simply wont Sub.

Modern Warfare 3 (Black Ops also was due to have subs but it was moved for MW3) started subs because IW brought in Beachhead Studeos and yet… MONEY!

I’m fine if EA makes game which are buy and you can still play but you get DLC’s and stuff quicker with Subs. Just like with MW3.

  8. I’m assuming this would be for the likes of Battlefield, Medal of Honur, Fifa, Madden etc.

But really. Most other games these days. How many people are still playing them after a month? Most people will have them finished within a few days. And if they’re gonna have to pay after the first month? Oops. There it goes to the pre-owned pile.

  9. Ok.

Once people play XBL, they pay to use it.

EA now wants to say, “NOW YOU HAVE TO PAY TO USE THAT GAME! I DON’T CARE YOU PAY MONEY FOR XBL! I WANT MOAR OF YOUR MONEY! I’M GOING TO CHARGE YOU $10 TO PLAY A 2ND HAND GAME ONLINE! MOAR MONEY RIGHT NOW!

  10. So we have to pay for EA’s stuff and then a subscription on top of that just to access content. That sounds like a pretty stupid idea. Who’s ideology was it to “think” of something like this?

EA you do this and you will probably make half the investment, even though you’re “trying” to maximize.
