Sonic & All-Stars Racing Dev Talks Similarities Between Mario Kart 7

Joe Neate, the producer behind the recently announced Sonic & All-Stars Racing has attempted to explain the similarities between the game and Nintendo’s Mario Kart 7. Neate says development for Sonic & All-Stars Racing started before Mario Kart 7 was revealed to the world.

“The key thing is that vehicles can transform, so you can not only race on land but on water and in the air too. There can be up to three surfaces per track, meaning you can have cars racing alongside boats during certain sections, for example. The second part of the transformation element is that the tracks can transform in different ways.”

“When Nintendo showed MK7 in more detail we realized it was more focused on kart customization. So you have this option to not fly as such, but what we call ‘falling with style,’ and this gliding is something we had considered during pre-production on our game. But we decided to go with full 3D flying for our game, so you’re not forced to land after a certain amount of time. Obviously you have to take the flying route, but it’s full 3D movement and it’s a proper flying model.”

    1. ‘falling with style’ that’s what they say in Toy Story. Sega, you seriously thought that we don’t remember Toy Story ?

      1. I saw the toy story line too. I like how he said they were working on it before mk7 was announced and not we started working on it as soon as we saw what mk7 was doing. There’s jusy no way I believe they came up with this on their own.

      2. tired of steryotypes

lol i know right im almost 15 and still remember that movie it was/is one of mah favorites lol i thought that when i saw that line i was like sony steals again lol

        1. There is so much that is just incorrect in this comment. You’re almost 15, so you were born well after the release of the first Toy Story. Saying you “remember” it implies that you were there, or that it’s been such a long time since you’ve seen it, both of which aren’t true. Sony steals again? I don’t even…

          1. tired of steryotypes

when i say that i remembered it i ment i watched it when i was little… like 4-5 and it was my favorite movie at the time and i havent seen it in forever…. so yah it was a long time for me just sayin’

    2. “Neate says development for Sonic & All-Stars Racing started before Mario Kart 7 was revealed to the world.”
Well Mario Kart 7 was in development before that, so what’s his point? Why can’t he just accept that this game is a complete rip off of Diddy Kong Racing? SEGA thought we had all forgotten about that game didn’t they? Lol

      1. My thoughts exactly. I think I would be okay with a Diddy Kong Racing clone, we’ve never really had one of those.

      2. I think you’re all missing an important part of processing this whole thing… the question you should be asking and answering is “Why does Sonic and all of his fast-ass friends that can outrun a car like it was vegetating human carcass, need to race in cars?”

  1. BWHAHAHAHAHA SONIC KART IS SUCH A CLONE! first one was awful! mario kart 7 online ftw!

as digi green ta said…. trend setters!

    1. I am a fan of Nintendo and not a big fan of Sega, but your post makes me sad. Atleast when they cloned, they actually do an improvement not just basically copying everything. The real clones are the Dev who made “Playstation All-Star Battle Royale”

  2. usually Toysrus, BestBuy and Target have sales on games when a new system comes out. Might pick this up as part of the Buy2Get1Free or Buy1Get1HalfOff

          1. segasonicthehedgehog

I’m afraid you have the slogan wrong, my friend. It’s “SEGA does what NintenDON’T

  3. I want to see diddy kong racing on the 3DS :( Ive only played it a few times at a neighbours house as a kid. I didnt have a N64. Probaly wont hapen cause its on DS.. and I can never find it anywhere!

  4. These cart racing games are always fun. Nintendo has the best one, of course, but this one is sounding very good too. Leave luck to heaven.

    1. Have you played Crash Team Racing or Mod Nation Racers? I’d say those two games are on par, if not better than the Mario Kart series.

      1. ye ye why does no one remember crash team racing i remember when i had it for ps1 and ps2 talking about crash i hope he make a new game like the wrath of cortex

      2. I understand Crash Team Racing, but Mod Nation Racers? In my opinion that game was pretty boring, no hate it’s just what I honestly thought, played it for like 8 minutes and there was nothing captivating about it to me.

  5. To be fair just cos mario karts was first that doesnt mean th other kart games arent good – th first sonic and sega all stars was pretty awesome with some great tracks. ppl need to give other games a chance just cos nintendo did it first doesnt mean others cant have a go

      1. I don’t really see it as a clone, just in the same genre of racing game which is I guess you call an item based kart racer. I didn’t play the 1st game but I’ll definitely pick this up if it comes to Wii U.

          1. So if it was just a standard racing game, you wouldn’t have considered it a clone? There isn’t much the racing genre can do to evolve, and freely changing between different modes of travel is pretty unique in its own way.

I’m really high, and I had to read this like 4 times to try and figure out what it meant. I think I thought the monkey noise was laughing or something and I’m not really sure what else; Like I said I’m high. And then I realized it was just the troll dude so it didn’t matter.

    1. free riders was the worst piece of shit i’ve seen sonic in. hopefully this will be better, not that i want to buy it though.

  6. I’m glad to see them trying to improve upon Mario Kart 7 instead of stealing the idea. It’s a good way to keep games fresh and better as time goes on!

  7. So you can fly through the whole thing, but have to take alternate routes? Careful, there are balance issues for these things ala Diddy Kong racing

  8. Well, first of all, if anything, Mario Kart 7 stole some ideas from Diddy Kong Racing.
Second, what’s the big deal if SEGA adds flying and swimming to their game?
It’s fun and should be a standard gimmick for every racing game nowadays, anyway (should have been standard since Diddy Kong Racing!).

    1. I really didnt like the first one, but this feature where you can fly, and race through land and water has cought my attention.

I’m still waiting on a new Mickey SpeedWay

  9. sega does one: its ok, ima get it, it adds more than mario kart 7 did.

Sony Publishes One: >=$ blatant Clone, Fuck you sony, Nintendo Creates Sony Imitates!

    smh, fucken Fanboys.

  10. So, let me get this straight. Everyone is complaining for how Sony is copying Nintendo for a Smash Bros clone. While others are complaining for how Sega is copying MK7.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see Capcom or the fans are complaining when Street Fighter came out. By having 2 characters fighting while having the bar on top of the screen.
Sony isn’t really the first ‘Smash Bros Clones’, guys. There are others that Nintendo started. Same goes with this game, Diddy Kong Racing did something simular and that was over a decade ago. I’m pretty sure there are more than Sonic All Star Racing, did more out there that we didn’t heard much of.

      1. well its me ofcourse

well lets see street fighter is COMPLETLY DIFFERENT
i dont say mk7 is a diddy kong racing clone beacause you would have to fly a whole race!
and i call Sonic All Star Racing a dkr clone
        that is that

    1. I’m sorry to tell you this but your comment is not backed up by anything except hot air. First, Sony didn’t just try to make their own crossover game, because they could have gone the MvC route, no, they chose Smash because it’s Nintendo and since it sold well in Japan at first, they also want a share on that profit. What Sony is desperately trying to do is create IPs, which are for Nintendo, the biggest console sellers. Second, Street Fighter had a combat system that relied on strategy and button combination that made it fluid and able to pull combos off the book, meaning unlike Mortal Kombat in which the only combos where a set of keys at a set order after pressing the run button (keep in mind I’m saying combos, not moves) and on top of that the special bar pulls super combos which unlike a fatality can be used while the enemy is alive. And last, you keep saying that Diddy Kong Racing started it all, but sadly Mario Kart came out BEFORE this, and even if you still say “oh but the flying and stuff..” well guess what?? Rare IS part of Nintendo, so even if you say Sega is copying Diddy Kong Racing, YOU’RE STILL SAYING THAT SEGA IS COPYING NINTENDO.

  11. People can’t deny that Sony copies Nintendo. I think that this isn’t a bad thing though. However it is funny. But I love crash team racing which is obviously Mario cart and I’m looking forward to play station all stars which is almost the exact gameplay as smashbros and don’t forget the play station move. I mean come on Nintendo innovates then everyone copies. But again it’s not a bad thing, just funny.

      1. well its me ofcourse

it is a bad thing us hardcore gamers do not want clones and crash team racing WAS THE WORSE GAME OF ALL TIME! and its not mario kart so score settled

        1. I actually liked it.. but maybe it was just the experience of playing with friends that made it special? So I guess it wasn’t all that bad.

    1. Sega/Sonic Team need make up for the games they didn’t make for Wii by making them for Wii U or WiiWare on Wii U. (Sonic 06[It was originally supposed to be remade for Wii], Sonic Generations, Sonic 4 Ep. 2, Sonic 4 Ep. Metal, and Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed.
