An employee at US retailer Best Buy has apparently snapped a photo of the company’s terminal which shows the Wii U listed at $300. Nintendo has already stated that it will announce pricing and a release date at a later date. However, they have previously mentioned that the console will be affordable. Is $300 a reasonable price?

they could price it at $280 but that does seem fair no more than that though
whats your problem ?? its a nextgen console ! what do you think its a downgrade of todays techno ?? 300 is a reasonable price ! for everyone !
It is a next gen but graphics.
note most games out of the gate won’t have the best graphics (this happens with every console).
Graphic whore get off
dude chill, its only $20 less and people will buy it becuase the price tag has a 2 instead of a 3. trust me when you put those 2 prices together people will always go or the cheaper one. im not saying the wii u is cheap, but $280 seems fair
I LOVE NINTENDO BUT IN ALL HONESTY……THE PS3 WILL DOMINATE THE WII U HARDER THAN IT DID THE XBOX 360. NINTENDO WAKE UP AND LISTEN TO THE FANS, BECAUSE ONE DAY (i HOPE THIS NEVER HAPPENS) YOU MAY HAVE THE SAME FATE AS SEGA! WII U IS GOING TO BE A RIPOFF MARK LADY CACA’S WORDS KIDS.
Lady Shit… you have no idea. PlayStation 3 isn’t going to dominate a god damn thing. Although the repetitive God of War is running out of ideas and The Last of Us is like “Uncharted & The City”, they still have one of the casual titles since they’ve collaborated with the writer of Harry Potter. WTF, Tretton?
300 would be fair as 360 launched at nearly 800 remember?
yes it would, but you have to think like nintendo. wouldnt you prefer customers buy your product simply because its “cheaper” than $300? trust me, if you put a new ipad for $600 but put the same new ipad for $580, people would go for the lesser one
3000 is perfect for me! :D
Yeah 3000 is perfect xD
I would be ready to pay 3000$ for the WiiU if that was the only way to get one…
But you are not paying for it anyway… Your parents are!
Now shut the fuck up, Nintendo baby!
Just like how your Parents buy you Call of Duty? GTFO Fool.
OWNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
^This comment and the one above
Ha!!!!^^^^^^
No I buy my own Nintendo products…
Same and 300$ is just right for me
thout it was going too be more like 350 or 450 but i will pay that and dy a cupel more games but this is only a roomer Nintendo has not said a price yet so hope is stell their for something powerful that cost 350 at lounch sorey want something that lasts this time and if thay give us that thay are werth every piney
$350 if it come with a game
I thought I told you to gtfo and play your Call of Duty Black Cocks, you orange flavoured motha fucka
Microfag
not all the time if your 18 and up you should pay not your parents
if you live in nyc i would gladly sell you my wiiu deluxe for 320 with nintendo land and arkham city.
No $300 is too high..
Too high? The PS3 was $600 at launch. This is half the price.
He’s right in a sense, even if the Wii U is a bit ahead technologically than ps3 and 360, since it has no HDD, no licensing for DVD/HD DVD or Blu-ray to watch movies, and it uses proprietary disc format, the cost will be much lower than it should be. If we’re giving an estimate, the ps3 was 600 USD at launch, 6 years ago. A radeon HD of the early 7x series nowadays can be found for 100 USD or less, manufacturing, and investor costs are much lower than to a consumer, like us. I would say my estimate for how much each one of those systems cost them parts-wise should be about 130-140 USD, then including the handy work fee (if they depend on IBM to put their consoles together) should boost that up to maybe 160-180 USD. All in all its just a guess, but if they sell the system at 300 USD or more, they’ll be getting a lot of extra cash per piece, but since people like me exist, their overall sales would probably plummet. So I think Nintendo wouldn’t be so silly, I actually think they will either go for the 249.99 USD best case scenario, or 269.99 USD worst case scenario.
still have to take into account that there is a tablet controller that could have been worth around $100 – $200 to build
it’s full HD 1080p you fool
You’re an idiot. Everything compared to the PS3 at launch is cheap.
Because back then, sir, the PS3’s hardware was unbelievably good for that time. It was worth every dollar/euro. I mean, it was nearly as powerful as the WiiU is today, and that 6 whole years ago. Same goes for the Xbox360, which was even cheaper than the PS3, but still great. And I’m saying this being a die-hard Nintendo fan myself, which does not mean I’m not allowed to be a die-hard Sony fan as well. Because I am. Just face the facts instead of being such fanboys, seriously…
I would have been willing to pay a lot more if Nintendo decided to use much better hardware but like that I’m not even going to buy a WiiU at all because I don’t see any reason to pay 300€ minimum just to get a minor improvement of what a system I’ve been owning for 6 years already can do. And I’m not going to pay that much just to have the GamePad.
In denial much troll?
How is this trolling?
I’m not getting a Wii U either.
…at least until a Zelda game comes out, because then I would have no choice.
Judging by the fact that you weren’t able to answer me with reasonable arguments and prove me wrong but chose to post such an unqualified comment, I’m assuming that you are well aware that what I’ve said before was completely true but you simply can’t accept it because you are a fanboy to such an extent.
I hope you’re being sarcastic.
I think in Europe what they had to pay at launch for the PS3 was worth $1,000.00 U.S dollars. And anyway, the Wii was about $250.00 at launch. The Wii U is extremely more powerful than the Wii.. so, $50.00 more is awesome.
In Australia the PS3 was $1,200 at launch. The revised non-PS2-compatible version was $699, and then dropped to $599 (when my dad bought one).
1000 in canada. And people lined up for Christmas for spoiled little fucks!
$2600 in el salvador
in mexico 9000$ pesos…
in DR 30,000 and now it’s at 17,000
$300 would be a minimum price to expect and your’e stupid to want it lower.
i hope they included the wii u gamepad becuase 300$ is kinda cheap for a device like that
its needed to use the wii u so they would have to, if they didnt it’d be like the 3ds with the touch screen and AC adapter removed lol
Nintendo always includes its main controller.
Seems to be a very legit price. That or $350. But it’s not as ridiculous as Gamestop selling Wii U games at $100 on their site, right now.
Wow they are insane!
Gamestop isn’t very bright when it comes to pricing Wii U titles. I mean hell… the cost of Trine 2: Director’s Cut from the Wii U eShop is worth between $15 – $20. Gamestop WTF?!
Well.. they just it as that because the official prices haven’t been announced yet. They promise to move them down when they are.
If they price it at three hundred or less, then i can get it. It would be nice if it was less though
Yes, but they said that they weren’t planning to sell it at a loss.
the price seems right
Perfect price for a next gen Nintendo console.
I believe 300 is the sweet spot. Honestly, anything under would make me feel as if it were cheaply made. 300 is a number anyone would give for ae brand new console without complaints
I agree. I’d be willing to pay a little more, but if it launched with a $230 price tag, I’d have rather low expectations.
yes, its the “butter zone” of pricing and its affordable on any budget, of course some may need to save up for one but still.
350 if it comes with game, can’t go wrong with that
Honestly, I’d even take it at $350 or $400 if it came with a game. I feel like if it’s made well, then that’d be totally worth it. And I’m sure it’ll be made well. No red rings of death here :) Though, $400 wouldn’t be a lasting price, I don’t think, so yeah, $300 or $350. It’ll be one of the two.
It does come with a game, NintendoLand!
That’s not confirmed yet, is it?
It’s coming out, but they never confirmed it as a bundle or as a free game (like Wii Sports)
i dont think id buy it retail, its just a minigame collection
Why is everyone trying to put a price on the Wiiu? I thought that was Nintendo’s job. Or i could be mistaken
As consumers, we are the ones who will pay for it, so yes, talking about what prices we would buy their product at seems reasonable enough.
If they have a price ready, why didn’t they announce it at E3?
I don’t think it’s completely decided upon yet. They know they’re not selling it at a loss, but I think an exact one is still up for debate.
Because this is Best Buy, not Nintendo.
They are just making a guess, Nintendo has not said anything regarding price or launch date.
300 its the best price (ok, cheaper its always better), 35-400 was “a little too much”, byut 300 its perfect, it manages to get you a new consoles, with new games and doesnt set you back that much
$300-$350 is the sweet spot.
Let’s not be cheap here people -__- for all you people saying “lower would be better”.
thank you dude
i am willing to pay any were form $300 to $400.
Same for me!
It’s clearly not powerful enough to pay more than 400. We all know the next ps and Xbox will be powerhouses, we will pay > 400 just for Zelda, Mario and metroid
No one at all has confirmed that. For all we know, both the next PlayStation and next XBox could be less powerful than the WiiU. Don’t go spouting crap.
Next Xbox maybe but the Playstation 4 is already looking more powerful than both of the next gen systems, Sony said that they may not be the cheapest or first to launch a console but they want it to be the best so I think the next Playstation could be expensive and powerful
“It’s hard to say right now. I do not think we’ll have a console with a lot better graphics than the PS3 currently offered. I believe the future will be to offer consumers better and more accessible experience. The aim will be to make more people enter the world of video games and try to design titles for women.”
James Armstrong
Sony Computer Entertainment Vice President
Well of course it may be, but the graphics cannot be improved greatly, and the main thing that needs power now is to have more things on the screen, less rigid movements etc. These things will not make a console much better than the Wii U for example.
How much is that in food stamps? I’m a little low on cash.
I applaud you for lol’ing really hard, more than I have all this week
Good job
much better than wasting 250 or 300 in a vita
Didn’t they lower the price by like a lot! About $150 I though they said.
I don’t recall an announcement on a vita price drop at all.
Sony confirmed they are NOT lowering the price anytime soon… well fuck..
250-300 Is the sweet spot, anything more will be just ehhhhhhh
Every since Nintendo did a price cut on the 3Ds. People have this complex on how Nintendo should price their hardware now.
yeah how sad
To all the people saying $300 is a good price for this thing or even saying that it’s too much for it none of you better be complaining when epic officially says that the wiiu can’t run unreal engine 4. You can either have an affordable console or you can have a powerful console, But you can’t have both. It looks like wiiu is opting out for the first option.
Thank you
not thank u,.
Dude you never know until Epic officially announces unreal engine 4 can run on the Wii U. so shut up you Troll!
300 its the sweet-spot, and it could actually put the vita in an even harder spot, man 300 would be awesome and pretty affordable for nintendo & us
Well, an example: The PS3’s price was 300$… and obviously the Wii U is better than a PS3 :P So… 300$ for the Wii U it’s fine n_n.
The PS3 was originally $600? o.0
That’s what he’s saying, you moron.
I find 300 to still be a bit high. They overpriced the 3ds when it came out, and you guys saw how that went. I would list it at 240 / 250ish just to actually get buyers that are unsatisfied.
The 3ds would have been fine if the first good non-port or remake came out in the launch window, not 7 months later
$300 a bit too high? It’s pretty cheap compared for a next-gen system especially since the 360 cost $400 at launch and the PS3 cost $600 at launch.
Again, those launches were 6-7 years ago. Nintendo is counting on idiots like yourselves to compare the Wii U price to the PS3’s launch price so that any price they’ll set it at seems cheap by comparison. $600 back then was pretty expensive for a gaming console, but nowadays $600 is blasphemous, and that’s because half of that is now considered pretty expensive too. How people see prices will change with the times, and in these times, they don’t look too fondly on even 300 dollar price points.
I hope it’s more… I invest in quality not quantity (cheapness)
Don’t worry, when the official price is revealed people will still complain about it somehow..
I think 300 is the sweet spot. Not terribly expensive, and its new. Just ha e a feeling it will be $350 us
Nintendo knows they need to sell the console at a certain price so it won’t be sold at a loss and will have, by their estimates, enough units sold to make them happy and have people keep buying it. Their blunder was on the 3DS, at the price of $250 along with the lack of games, which caused them to sell the handheld at a loss.
Obviously they won’t want that to happen again, considering this is a home console.
$300 to $350 maybe ideal to us, but not to them. They need to find a certain price point that can give them the revenue and have people keep buying the unit without price dropping it.
3ds was 350 here in Aussie since pricecut 250. games average 70. now you know why almost all of Aussies are waiting for a 3ds with two circle pads and decent battery life. they could easily sell at least 10million units here if they stopped ignoring the fact our dollar is about worth the same as a US dollar.
I heard its your “We have the nicest beaches tax” lol, i dont know how much the Aussie dollar is worth but if its on par with the US its probably on par with the canadian dollar too and we get the same prices as the US
$300 is a deal for me. I hope this is the price. :)
To me, a Wii U game console with a Game Pad, Nintendo Network, and the ability to stream movies and TV programs on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, and Hulu Plus… priced at $300? Not only is a great deal… but a DEFINITE stocking stuffer!!!!!
You must have pretty big stockings to fit a console in them…
It’s only worth anything if it has top of the line games. Which so far it doesn’t have much.
yes! a thousand times yes! 350 is a stretch, but still a yes!
I’m willing to pay up to just about $449.00. I REALLY do believe the Wii U will sell at $349.00, though!
as much as I like the sound of this price, I’m gonna wait till the big N says otherwise.
Leave Luck to Heaven :3
I think that’s really reasonable. It’ll give the edge over other next-gen consoles when they do release. Sony basically already said we’re gonna make the best, most expensive console, and no one knows about any XBOX. $300 is probably the ideal price for any launch, I’d say up to $400 is reasonable, though considering it’s most likely going to be the least powerful of the 3 and we don’t know what innovations the other consoles will have, I’m gonna say they’re playing it smart and safe. It’s probably like the Wii was…cheap to manufacture so cheaper selling price :D (except maybe the controllers…)
i have a blue ray player i dont even use so its good to know nintendo is about the people sure netflix hulu is cool but those are just additinal features not built in im sure sony next system will be like 1000 2000 bucks lol plus game controller harddrive lol
CDO anyone?
That would be a great price. Hopefully we hear the official word from Nintendo soon
I THINK they might announce that either August or September.
Oh hmm. August I think would be better. September would be kinda cutting it close to release day lol
You do have point lol!
Doubt that cuz AC3 will be released on 29th october.
i am taking about when Nintendo will announce the release date
They want to make a profit and they are not going lower than 250…hmmmm
This isn’t a handheld here buddy.
No one said it was, are you on the right article or something.
http://mynintendonews.com/2012/06/07/satoru-iwata-reveals-minimum-wii-u-price/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=JPSQOomMWromynintendonews.com/2012/06/10/nintendo-says-we-wont-sell-wii-u-at-a-loss/
Know what your replying to before you do.
and that hmmmm was me thinking of a price between 260 and 350.
I’m in the right article alright. It’s just that people shoot expectations in extensive directions or compare them to how the pricing incident of the 3ds went too often.
I wasn’t compare the pricing incident of the 3DS to anything. I was adding two details of the Wii U pricing together.
-They want to make a profit from the beginning
-And they are not going lower than 250$
And the Hmmmm was not sarcasm, it was me thinking of a price between about $260 to $350.
I didn’t understand you the 1st time since I didn’t know you were referring to anything outside of this news but I see what you meant after you were referring to the other bit of news from before. Sorry about the confusion.
People have to realize video gaming is a luxury not a necessity. You can’t have it your way all of the time this isn’t BK lol.
$300-350 is perfect, then I can still buy a game and Wii U Pro.
i think 300 is fine, ill be prepared with 400 to buy a game and possibly the pro controller!
well hell yeah its offordable i mean sure the vita run u about 300 bucks but who the hell wana spend all that money for something thats not even fun to play with
plus a 100$ memorycard
as an Aussie our ebgames has the console listed at 598 gamepads are 98 controller pro are 78 and games 102. all but the gamepads need to decrease to 80% of listed price to sell. nintendo land is listed as own game.
TOO EXPENSIVE!!
How in the name of freaking HELL you think it’s too expensive? Enlighten us… we quadruple dog dare ya!!!!!!!
and the ps3 wasn’t???
^^this^^
I am pretty sure the Controller comes with right? The one with the screen. I can pop for the Pro.
you’re right. you get a gamepad with console
Yes the controller comes with it, because its the main selling point of the console.
HELL YA THIS IS REASONABLE!!! The ps3 launch price was 600, and it was last generation, the wii u at 300 for next gen technology…. DAMN!!!
Sickr, why don’t you post the actual image snapped by the employee instead of something only semi-related? Other news sites have the image.
The Wii was 250 so 50 more bucks for them to do it right seems fine to me
Under £200 and its released in November, the month of my birthday, what a freaking BARGAIN!!! I’m gonna do a lot of hinting between now and then, cant hold on till Xmas want this baby wrapped up before the festive season lol.
Hopefully that means the rumour about it costing £279 in the UK might be true, if so I’m happy with that price even if we are getting slightly fucked over with the exchange rate.
$300 is £192 in English pounds.
Yeah but there’s no way it’ll cost that, just look at the 3DS on launch, $250 for America, £200 – £220 in the UK.
I’m willing to pay anything between £200-300 just to get my hands on this beast, wish it was released today as i’m ready and willing to part with my dosh NOW lol
I paid $350+tax for the 3DS and I thought that was to much for a home console, yet alone a handheld. Then I got kicked in the balls when the dropped the price. But they did give me 20 free downloadable games. I just couldn’t get past the $350 for a handheld when Nintendo has always had much lower prices. I wouldn’t pay more than $350 for the U but if Nintedo really wants to make me happy they will slap a price of $299.99 on the box. Also I want real headsets for COD!!!
There might be 3rd party headsets in development at the moment from what I read so far but the wii u gamepad already has an integrated mic and speakers. Heck you can plug in some headphones in it and there ya go.
That would be even better then I would have more options for headphones. That lil COD earpiece can go f itself.
but the 3DS was $250
Sorry you are correct it was $250. Still a lot at the time for a handheld. But it is like having a console in your hands(Somewhat).
My question is: is it the console + the new “gamepad” (controller), or just the console?
Final answer: Both… the console and the Game Pad.
That’s like asking for a handheld without the buttons.
$300 w/ Nintendoland…
Pingback: Anonymous
It will most likely come bundled with Nintendoland and one game pad. It’s possible they’ll bundle a Wiimote with it but most likely not.
Keep in mind the Wii launched at $250, so when you consider the game pad and the superior hardware, $300 seems perfectly reasonable.
-IPGR
well the wii was able to launch at that price because the hardware was more or less previous generation hardware…it was about 1.5 to twice as strong as the gamecube. So they were able to sell it cheaper because a lot of the tech was considered “old tech”…..and we’re in the exact same position with the wiiu. Where it is using relatively old tech. This thing is very comparable to the current gen. Its not a next gen system hardware wise. So they really should be selling this thing at about $250.
I fear if they sell at 300. The general public are just not gonna buy. Most of us fanboys will; but not the general public. There just isnt any content enticing enough just yet. Maybe when they reveal more info people will get excited about it.
normally this price would fine…unfortunately i just didnt see anything to make me want to buy the wiiu right away…i’ll wait till they at least have a legitimate mario entry. 300 is too much at launch, considering the games that were shown for the launch window. Nothing system sellling.
Double standards much… or you don’t have a clue?
You’re the one who doesn’t have a clue if you think your response was valid at all for his comment. Nothing that he said suggested anything about double standards. Yet again another obsessive fanboy who read a little too beyond the lines.
And yes, there was nothing system selling shown so far for the Wii U. Unless you’re the kind of person who can’t recognize quality and therefore just buy every single Mario game because you can’t tell the difference between a good game and a bad one.
Live and Fuck in Heaven
this guy is brain dead…i wont even bother responding or even commenting to anything he says….he’s a moron..and unfortunately makes the rest of us nintendo fans look bad. Unfortunately, im seeing a lot of people here who disappoint me as a nintendo fan
More like a Pretendo fan. You need to stop compaining about it. It’s affordable to have a Wii U priced at $300.
I always said $300-$350 is the best bet. I think that’s what Nintendo’s aiming for. Leave luck to heaven.
It’s way to high. I would pay $150, maybe $200 max for it. I would be willing to pay $30″ if it was its own new awesome console, but it’s not. It’s an add on to the Wii. It does look great, but it’s not it’s own system.
*$300
“but it’s not it’s own system” wat…
my thoughts exactly
it is a new console
this guys a fool^^^
what are you talking about the wii u is not an add-on for the wii its a brand new console you should know that
I think that $300 is the perfect price. $350 would sound too expensive and $250 would be the original price of the 3DS which wouldn’t fly.
This is perfect.
$300 on a new console, what other company would do that at launch?
Defiantly not Sony. (Remembers PS3 price reveal)
sony doesnot want there console cheap.
I’m still seriously expecting 350.
I would pay 399, with better specs, of course.
if 300$ is the price in my contry is gona be in 321$. that is countin the tax in my country :)
Pretty good price in my opinion, not too cheap and not too expensive. Though Nintendo needs to come up with a reason why the Wii U is that price because if it has old hardware that can’t compete with next gen hardware then the price should be lower and also the fact that the system doesn’t come with internal storage apart from the SD card meaning Nintendo has to work hard to convince people that this is the right price by showing off some of the specs and maybe giving the GPU a boost so that it can run Unreal Engine 4
So Nintendo said they would not sell the unit for a loss. The question is how much of a profit are they looking for? If there only making $50 then maybe the specs are ok, but if there making 100 or more then its safe to say the specs not that grate.
$300
Worries me that it might not be that powerful. $350 or above would be fine for me.
i dont understand this logic. We all have a general idea as to where this system stands graphically in comparison to the current systems. Which is very close to those. And is launching without any killer apps; nothing that is considered MUST OWN.
ps3 currently sells for about 250 and by the time the wiiu launches less even. these guys are just waiting for nintendo to announce its price before rolling out their price cuts to battle it.
with similar tech…and no killer apps….nintendo needs to be way more agressive. otherwise it could find itself in a situation where they are selling for an extra 100 dollars over the competitors without any stand out titles to make consuumers ignore the difference in price and the fact that the games are looking graphically identical so far.
