At a recent developers conference in Japan, Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai delivered a keynote address that was mainly a compilation of his history in the video game industry. During his speech, Sakurai mentioned the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games by saying “It’s fun making new skills for new characters.”
Despite his previous claim that the next games in the series probably won’t feature a host of new characters, we now know that Sakurai and team are indeed working on new characters for Nintendo’s upcoming brawlers.

Zoroark and Ghirahim…? Ghirahim’s final smash could be turning into his form from his final battle, and Zoroark could have some illusion-based power?
I reckon there’s quite the likelihood that Ghirahim will be in it, and although Zoroark will most likely replace Lucario, I don’t know what kind of abilities it will have. Pokemon Trainer may be replaced by a new trainer with the three most recent starters.
Why is it that Zoroark and Lucario can’t co-exist? I don’t see why they would cut Lucario, bar time constraints.
Personally, they should keep Brawl’s cast and add Mewtwo. If they have time, adding Zoroark would be nice as well; but not as a replacement for Lucario.
Because they’ve already said that they don’t want too many characters and if they cap that at 50, then they aren’t going to want about 7 or 8 Pokemon in the game.
Assuming that the cap is 50, I could easily see seven Pokemons in Smash.
Brawl had 39 characters. 50 characters gives us eleven more to work with.
And let’s say everyone returns and they add Mewtwo (using it in this case since I consider it to be far more likely than a Pokemon newcomer). There is still ten characters they can use.
Seven Pokemons is not outside of the realm of possibility in the slightest. Heck, bump that up to the 51-56 range and I could see us getting eight Pokemons.
Of course it isn’t out of the realm of possibility, but the two major statements regarding the next Smash Bros. are that they don’t want too many new characters and that they plan on reviving some of their oldest series (NES/SNES times). Say they have 5 of them, that would leave them with 6 characters to add. That really isn’t too much room for many more Pokemon. I love Pokemon, and so do many other people, but Smash Bros is pretty much the only game series that Nintendo has that can promote forgotten series, so they’re not going to waste that (Look at Pit and Kid Icarus, got a game out and everything).
Also, a lot of people want new characters from current series’ like Waluigi, Ghirahim, Skull Boy etc.
Lucario was a clone of Mewtwo so instead of having two pokemon as basically the same character Mewtwo was replaced. The same thing will probably happen here. There is NO POINT in having 2 characters who play basically exactly the same, clone characters need to go.

Aside from the Neutral B and the Side Smash, Mewtwo and Lucario are not similar in the slightest. Also, Mewtwo was never replaced, he was simply cut due to time restraints.

I really don’t see an interesting new character beyond the current roster. I mean Riddley, Skull Kid of Ghirahim won’t be too bad. I would rather them tighten up the current roster in the last 3 games and reduce the number of clones.

Agreed for Fox and Falco, but Ness and Lucas are very different. All of their normal moves (A attacks) are different and, although they’re used the same way, their special moves have different properties.
Yeah, but they’re too similar to be separate characters currently. As you said, they’re the same just with slightly different properties. A few modifications to one of them would be quite the improvement.
In the case of those characters I think is not bad that they are similar since they are from the same games.
What I think needs to be modified is Ganondorf being almost Captain Falcon. Ganondorf has the potential to be a unique character and really should be.
Still, there should be two characters in a fighting game that are almost the exact same person. The only time that should happen is if one is used as a costume change of the other.

I hope they remove clone characters (or in cases like with Ganondorf give them a unique moveset) and in their place put in new characters, so the roster doesn’t grow in size but does in variety.
I’d love to see Ghirahim replace Ganondorf actually, if they need a Zelda villain he has more potential than Ganondorf does.
Also, considering he’s been on several Nintendo handhelds now, I would love to see Sora join the mix, he has incredible potential for a variety of moves… But I seriously doubt that’d happen.

Falcon… Hell, have them both if you like, I just want Ganondorf to have an original moveset.

Agreed. Sonic is an iconic character because of his rivalry with Mario and he has had several games on nintendo consoles, so he does deserve to be there. Snake on the other hand, has only had ports to nintendo consoles, so he doesn’t have any special history with nintendo. If konami had to choose a character, I’d rather they choose Simon Belmont.

Technically there is no need to bring back Mewtwo, I see him as being more of a tradition of where bipedal Pokémon will replace the last one, like Lucario did with Mewtwo, many similarities there. I’m seriously hoping Zoroark will be that next Pokémon.
COMPLETELY agree on Snake and Victini, but as for R.O.B. I kinda liked him, and I’m still trying to figure out what Toad could do by himself.
There has been only one instance in which cuts occurred and contrary to what people may think, cuts are not nearly as likely as people think.
Mewtwo was never replaced by Lucario and both are extremely different from each other. They only share a few moves and that’s it. Everything else; rest of the move set, types, the impact they made on the Pokemon franchise and personality-wise, they are completely different. Not to mention that Mewtwo was planned to return for Brawl, so Sakurai intended for both of them to be together.
Given that Mewtwo is likely the most wanted character for SSB4 (and yes, above other newcomers) and has been planned for all three games, I am literally willing to bet on it returning. I also think that Lucario is going to return. If there is a sixth slot, they can put Zoroark/Victini/Genesect/whathaveyou in there as long as it’s any good, but not at the expense of either Lucario or Mewtwo.
I take my opinion back now. Now I realize that Lucario and Mewtwo aren’t really that similar, especially when you compare them to Captian Flacon and Ganondorf (seriously, wtf?). Anyway, you make a good point on the entire subject, Mewtwo did have a way bigger impact than Lucario, but they are both extremely (if no where near equal) popular pokémon. But I’m still thinking Zoroark has potential in Super Smash Bros.

But in the end you’d be the same character with the same move set, there is not enough variety between them. You can already give Pit a Dark Pit skin in Brawl. Unless you can come up with a 100% different moveset to Pit I will not agree with this idea. Clone characters need to go, and no new clones should be added, by now that’s just lazy design.

If any of the characters are being removed, my votes are on Lucas, Ike, Lucario, Sonic, Snake, Toon Link, and possibly R.O.B. Lucas was a near-perfect clone of Ness’ movepool, Ike no longer has promotional value, Sonic and Snake seemed like a one-shot deal to me, Toon Link won’t have any more promotional value if the next game for Zelda doesn’t feature his style, and R.O.B. was mostly used as his tie to the Emissary. Just my thoughts, take em or leave em.

The statement he made in no way actually states that he’s making new characters. What kind of a boneheaded logic do you need to deduce that? He’s just saying in general that he likes making new skills for new characters. And even if he actually were adding new characters to the game, the statement he makes here still doesn’t correlate to that.

He was excellent in 64, got a little better in Melee but had worse recovery, and then they totally nerfed him to hell in Brawl.
He now hits light a light weight and recovers like Bowser, if not worse, his boomerang only hits going out, his arrows got weaker, he can’t use his own bombs as a saving maneuver via spin attacking into a thrown one, his combo ability fell almost completely flat without some seriously ingenious meta-game play style controlling him….
Bring the hero back up to par, Nintendo.

How is this news? Of course Sakurai is adding new characters. There are still at least twenty worthy additions left.
People here are saying that the roster won’t increase; but Sakurai never said anything like that. It’s just people taking thing and twisting the context of what he said. I will be surprised if we do not get at least 48 characters (transformation included). My personal prediction is 53 characters. A lot, but there’s no need to be pessimistic
I personally think that we aren’t getting cuts. Be honest here, why would Sakurai want to cut anyone? If anything, based on every character being very popular additions and the roster being better than Melee, he’s going to want everyone to come back and he will do what he can to ensure that.
As for characters I would like to see, oh boy there’s a lot, but my most wanted is Mega Man. I also highly support Toad, Paper Mario, Geno, King K. Rool, Ghirahim, Krystal, Mewtwo, Genesect, Samurai Goroh, Roy (Fire Emblem), Palutena, Takamaru, Mach Rider, Isaac, Saki, Mii and Ray (Custom Robo).
I agree with all your characters but, Palutena… I mean she is a goddess who can change form to be larger than the world… how could she be a charcter? It would be too unfair. Oh I also think Mach Rider should just be an assist trophy. We already have Captn. Falcon. M.R. would be like the same thing…

The size argument is a terrible argument that should never be used. If they can scale Olimar to be in Smash, they can scale Palutena down. Beside, Smash is not canon.
As for Mach Rider; he’d probably be unique if he got in. Characters like him, you have to think outside of the box. Like Sakurai did with Captain Falcon.

I read that some people want the Jiggs to be cut? You are all crazy! :O Jiggs is one of my favorite characters! Along with Lucario, Peach, Marth and Pit!
I would absolutely LOVE if they added Tom Nook. It would be veryyyy amusing. Also they could put in a slightly better costume change system. I’ll use Peach and Daisy as an example. You could insert flowers instead of hearts for peach’s moves that make hearts appear. she could also use toadette instead of toad. she would basically be the same character, just with moves that looked a little different. you could also do this for Yoshi and Birdo or Fox and Wolf. Donkey Kong and Krazy Kong? Pokemon Trainer and other pokemon similar to the three? It would probably be best if they didn’t go too crazy with it but just a couple that way you could have more characters without filling up the roster. (the mario characters could go on forever as a majority of them have a pallet swap) (I don’t know if I spelt pallet right…)

I knew this would happen. If they’re adding new characters, I can think of 4 I definitely want:
-Magnus (Kid Icarus Uprising) Seriously, if he isn’t in SSB4 as AT LEAST an assist character, I’ll be quite upset. I’m also hoping his theme gets put into the game as well- it’s awesome.
-Krystal (Star Fox) Give her a moveset based around the staff from Adventures- that way she will in no way be a clone of Fox like Falco and Wolf were. Seriously, that staff gives potential.
-Ghirahim (Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword) Yes, he’s a common want for the next Smash (and he’s a bit of a fruit), but it’d be nice to have another Zelda villain on the roster.
-Silver (Sonic series) Okay, bit of a wild card, but I do like him as a character, and he has strong potential. It’ll be fine if he doesn’t get in; I just think it’d be a treat if he did.
Strong potential? STRONG POTENTIAL?! Jar Jar Binks has much of a “strong potential” as fucking Silver!
Really? I fail to see how fucking Silver would lead to potential unless he had healthy offspring.

You must keep Jigglypuff, seeing that she/it has been a part of the original twelve. Just buff up her/its moveset and her/its air maneuver skills (increased speed and agility in air). Also, make Sing actually do something and have Sleep Talk produce random effects (example: Fire/ stongest; most knockback diagonally and damage, Flower/ mid-strong, extreme vertical knockback and deals most continuous damage, Poison or Electric/ mid-strong horizontal-or-down knockback plus added effects, and etc). Also include faster-charging A-smashes; they’re pretty slow.
Also keep Ganondorf, as since he is an iconic, recurring villian throughout the series. Change his moveset a bit, give him a usable sword (example: Side-B could execute combos like Marth), increase speed, give him better jumps but nerf/change his Up-B, apply longer-ranged and unique aerials, and give him the heaviest toadstool jump (like, when he toadstool jumps, the charcter falls farther than it would when other characters toadstool jump him/her/it). Add a few binks-and-bonks, and you could have a completely lethal character.
Sonic is not going anywhere; not too sure about Lucas, Ike, and Snake, though.
I would really like to see an integrated system of assist trophies, seeing the many possibilities of new trophies added. For example, characters more often receive assistance from characters associated with his/her/its game (example: Link getting Skull Kid more often than, par say, Cpt. Falcon by 20% or such). Also, characters could have their own unique assist trophies (example: Sonic gets help from Tails when he is thrown off the stage or something). Also, pokemon from pokeballs deal less/more damage depending on its brawler who summoned it.
In addition, more colors and reskins, item randomness, different final smashes (more cinematic ones like Cpt. Falcon’s and play-as ones like Bowser’s and Yoshi’s), and etc. I am really looking forward to this game and its proceeders; this has become a great jumbo franchise out of multiple franchises. Also, if possible, please a make a separate game based on things like Subspace Emissary or Adventure Mode, so that developers can improve the gameplay and etc of the beat-em-up while improving the story, gameplay, and etc of the Adventure Mode. (I know I typed a lot, deal with it ;P)
they should get rid of jiggly puff 2 i completely agree with you 3 sonic will probably stay and so will lucas but not snake and ike 4 i agree completely 5 i don’t think nintendo could process that much in one video game. PS i can deal with it XD

Sakurai has said that while third party characters made fans happy, they need to be narrowed down or it just would lose focus on it being a Smash Bros game, so maybe one

4.Mega Man-Personally I prefer Ryu but everyone wants Mega Man in and he does want a Capcom, oh well
3.Ryu Hayabusa-Team Ninja did help with a Metroid game, and Nintendo is helping them improve a Ninja Gaiden game

i think they should keep ike with him being in only ssbb and i can’t see megaman as a character maybe an assist trophy form for megaman, i indeed believe in the idea for new characters maybe 8 more characters i would like to replace ice climbers, and i also think captain falcon should stay and change ganons powers because taking out CF would be like taking mario out of a mario party game.
