Miyamoto Explains Why Luigi’s Mansion 2 Is On 3DS, Rather Than Wii U

Legendary video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has explained to GT.TV host Geoff Keighley why Nintendo decided to release the forthcoming Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon on the Nintendo 3DS, rather than the Wii U. Miyamoto says that ever since the launch of the original Luigi’s Mansion on the Gamecube, they have really wanted to see how the game would look in 3D.

“Actually, when we first developed the GameCube game one of the things that we really wanted to do in developing that game was to see the visuals on a 3D screen,” Miyamoto explained.

“At the time we experimented with a 3D monitor and looking at the game in 3D, and that actually ties to how we actually got to release the Nintendo 3DS.

“So we thought the connection between the two was really important and we wanted to bring Luigi’s Mansion, in a new version, to Nintendo 3DS where those 3D visuals could really come to life.”

      1. why is it stupid? he just told us HIS motivations for making it on the 3ds. Miyamoto is konwon for that. a heavy reason why n64 still had catridges was that they couldn’t make super mario 64 the way HE wanted with load times and so on a CD. and i am thankful, n64 cartridges still play fine,d oesn’t matter how old they are.

        1. Eh not really, I have Perfect Dark for Nintendo 64 and that game lags so much now compared to Super Mario 64 and The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, in fact, it’s the only game I have for N64 that actually lags. Thankfully I have the Arcade version downloaded to the Xbox One and the lag time and frame rate has improved drastically.

    1. The Gamecube had 3D capabilities built in, and the first game planned to use these was going to be Luigi’s Mansion. Iwata said once: “To tell you the truth, GameCube is secretly designed to load graphical circuits which display graphics for right and left eyes respectively, for a future possibility of realizing 3D gaming experience” Nintendo already “had interest in this technology,”

They eventually dropped it because 3D TV sets at the time were too expensive and nobody had one.

      The more you know!

      1. I also remember hearing that the add on that would have activated the 3D would have been more expensive than the console itself.

    1. Right. But I suppose that Nintendo never imagined that Wii U, in its first 4 months in the market, would be caught in all the troubles it has been facing.

    1. lol, they were working for the WiiU since 2007, 1 year after the launch of Wii. I Guess Luigis Mansion 2 wasn’t existing in their minds at this time ;)

  1. Actually if you know the story of Luigi´s Mansion, the game was from the very beginning design to be a 3D game, and the Game Cube almost do it, but not; so it´s pretty logic that they come wiht this move.

  2. Okay, well the 3DS thing makes sense, but I still feel like they could’ve made great use of Wii motion plus with a Wii version a couple years back. Would’ve been a great game to launch that add on with. But whatever. Do yo thing Miyamoto…and please, with a new IP or 2 if you can, it’s been a while since you got a new character to us :D

        1. I do too! Actually I am looking forward to see what are the Nintendo plans for it. And I also wonder why nobody asks Iwata or Miyamoto about the Non-specific Action Figure during interviews.

  3. I love the 3D effect, and can’t wait to play this ony 3DS and take it with me places.

HOWEVER, This is going to get ported to the WiiU. Mark my words. It WILL happen, and you heard it from me first. ;)

    1. you came from the future too?
There’re lots of people on this site who came from the future, they know everything about the WiiU. lol

      1. I am from te future! And my goal is to try to keep Chrom from dying!

I may be wrong, obviously. I just think it’s a good guess as we are seeing other 3DS games being ported. ;)

        1. I was just joking :)

I would love a new luigi’s mansion made especially for the WiiU, I have some ideas so if Nintendo wants to hire me, I would make an incredibly good game. one of these ideas: Luigi now is a real ghostburster, it’s his main job, he just quit the plumber job. People hire him to uncover mystery in their masions, and Egad just made a new invention: the Ghostpad 3000 where he can play as a detective and find clues and gather information and solve cases. I won’t detail the gameplay, because I might use the idea in my own game U_U

        2. I’m from the future too. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon has a sequel. Bowser gets his hands on the remote control to the boo canister, and releases King Boo and the other boos. They roam free in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi have to team up; with separate storylines and gameplay. Mario has his original platform style, getting through the levels to defeat bowser. Luigi has his own gameplay style, going through various locations in the kingdom, capturing ghosts and eventually king boo. Peach and Daisy are BOTH featured in this game as damsels in distress. It’s called Luigi’s Mansion: Dual Scheme, and is released on Wii-U in 2015. Any takers on making it sooner to change the future?

  4. Instead of bringing it only to the 3DS, he should have brought it to both the 3DS AND the Wii U (especially since the 3D effects of the 3DS is just a gimmick and has nothing to do with the game play. Not to mention, it just causes people like me to feel sick after a while). And made the Wii U version different. I hate when a sequel to a major console game comes out only on a handheld, because I can’t share it with anyone else. Same thing that happened with both Wind Waker sequels on the DS. I’m still waiting for (and hoping for) a sequel to Wind Waker on the Wii U.

    1. Thats your opinion, to me i love the 3D effects, it really adds depth to the gameplay experience and it by no means is a gimmick and am will enjoy more 3ds games that makes good use of this function..

  5. I heard about this awhile back. I knew that they had originally planned for Luigi’s Mansion to be in 3D, so it makes complete sense for the sequel to be on the 3DS.
