Former Grand Theft Auto producer at Rockstar, Jeremy Pope, has told Games Industry that he can’t see there being three consoles in the next, next generation. Pope says it will be extremely challenging for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, and says that it is hard to fathom that we are going to have these three big players in the console market in the future. Pope wouldn’t be drawn into who he thought might leave the home console market, but he did say that several companies have stopped developing console games because it’s become so expensive and time-consuming. Here’s what Pope had to say.

Indie devs will probably survive fine, much like indie record labels. Small development costs, quicker development time, more room for risk but less marketing power.
Valve, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Apple. It’s a competitive market for certain, but it’s also a bigger market with more people gaming than ever before, so it’s not impossible to imagine them all surviving with the market share distributed more evenly.

PC is the most expansive platform so I don’t buy that it would be too expansive to do console games. But I reckon that it may be so that they need to cut down developing costs and if so I don’t think we can have that sophisticated consoles that’s comparable with PC standards when i comes to graphics. Console gaming have always been the cheaper options, and I guess it’ll continue that way. If we can’t get to the PC level we have to do other things, like a gamepad.
Actually, I just bought a new Lenovo Desktop PC – 3rd Gen. Intel Core i5-3330 3.2GHz, 8GB RAM upgradeable to 16gb), 1TB HDD, DVDRW for under $500. For what you get in consoles, PCs can still be a better buy. I also own Nintendo and Sony for most of my gaming, but PCs are still much more powerful.

I want to say i hope Microsoft goes out, seeing as their contribution is….pointless, while Sony actually does a better job, is more respectful of their customer, and bothers to make exclusive content, but i think unless people grow a brain for this next gen, Sony could be in the most trouble.

PC won’t “kill” consoles, for the fact that people want consoles. I can’t image every John and Jane to going out to buy a GTX Titan, that’s not happening, people like the simplicity and easy of consoles, and the idea of just buying, and thats it, nothing else to worry about.
If Microsoft is the one to go, most likely they focus their efforts into PC. That being said, i’ll admit, the way it’s looking, Microsoft has actually done something quite smart and manage to edge themselves into being a multimedia entertainment company, and the Xbox 720 is most likely going to be that.

If there was one company to go down I think it would be Sony. The Vita is doing terribly and if the PS4 doesn’t do well, this could be it for Sony. Its gonna be a battle between microsoft and sony here because Nintendo’s got it’s own very supportive fanbase they can rely on whereas sony and microsoft have to fight over the self proclaimed hardcore CoD fanbase. Im inclined to say the loser is gonna be Microsoft and they’re going to move their franchises to PC exclusives in the future.
So then It’s gonna be a battle between Sony and Nintendo, and frankly I think Nintendo holds the high ground right now simply because they have the best studios in the world and make the largest variety of great games. You know when you buy a Nintendo console you are going to get some very good games you like for it eventually. Since Sony depends more heavily on 3rd parties that guarantee is not as powerful; not to mention Nintendo gets many of those 3rd party games in addition to their games as well.
Plus, with PC gaming becoming more and more prominent microsoft and sony’s console lose weight because the only thing setting their consoles apart is a generic controller you play your games with opposed to the keyboard and mouse. Obviously it is the same for nintendo to some extent, but wiimotes and the gamepad are both input devices that want you to play in front of a tv in a living room or maybe even by standing up, and the gamepad further provides the second screen advantage so multiple people can be in the room doing something at the same time. Eventually I think Nintendo may only sell controllers that work with PC’s to play their games as well but I do think that it’s going to be a longer time before that happens

I firmly believe that what Sony and Microsoft is doing by pushing power and graphics to the limit is really hurting the industry. Even today devs and publishers are having issues developing high caliber games because it costs too much. Back to the basics- fun and gameplay. Graphics of consoles these days are already impressive. Leave the ultra uber high definition to PC.

Exactly. As much is the case in today’s world, what believe choose to believe changes the facts in their minds Microsoft has a market cap of 220 billion. They aren’t going anywhere unless they choose to. Nintendo only has a mark cap of 16 million but they have 10 billion CASH in the bank. They aren’t going anywhere unless they choose too. Sony also has a market cap of around 16 billion, but has lost an astronomical amount of money from all there divisions. However, in the pays six months Sony has been able to trim-the-fat and get themselves in a much better financial situation then they were last September. If the PS4 takes off they should be fine, but that is a huge IF.
Out of the three the only company that has a reaosn to drop out of the console race would be Sony. but I don’t even see that happening. Worst case scenario is that all-three companies will have to downgrade their aspirations to fit that of the 3rd parties. Companies are folding-up left and right and cannot afford to keep up with all this hardware. I think we are going to start to see more and more exclusivity amongst 3rd party studios. You will see more alliances such as the ones with Nintendo/Sega, Sony/Square, and Microsoft/EA.

I believe microsoft will drop out considering theyre xbox one and all of that consoles shit
It’ll be Microsoft since the xbox one is going to do terrible overall IMO because of alot of things. 1) It’s being released this year along PS4 and I think i’m not the only only going to pick the PS4 over xbox one. 2) No Used Games which is terrible since both Wii U and PS4 support used games 3) Always online is almost been comfirmed since cloud gaming is what most developers might work with then the xbox one hardware itself.
I’ll tell you this, folks. How long the game will have its own unique console the soul, will entertain, frighten, forced to think for so long I do not care for how the system will play. Of course, wanted to brands such as Sony and Nintendo existed for as long. However, I would still fascinated me in the present, or even more. If you no longer … then it will be a problem for me
As much as I hate Xbox, I do not want neither console to die because prices for gaming consoles would increase faster than they are now because of less competition. Sony and Xbox have more 3rd party than Nintendo. If either Sony or Xbox died, one of those third party consoles could raise their prices as much as they wanted.
Its not nintendo, because even if they sell 30.000 Us.. they have many platforms that sell allot better and its the number 1 leading company in video games hardware!… I believe its microsoft… Its very clear what their audience want… They want a machine for everything… So microsoft will focus on that mostly and some video games.
I mean, Microsoft revealed today, that they entering the MOVIE world as well, with steven spielbergh… or whatever….
Now, if its SONY, things will be very vogue… bankruptcy…

To be honest, mostly I expect Sony to fall off the console market. I don’t think Microsoft is going anytime soon and the Xbox One proves that (I might get one actually, lol), and Nintendo has a lot of money in their reserves. Sony, on the other hand, is losing a lot of money everywhere, because of the early failures of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, along with the PlayStation Portable’s unsuccess of beating Nintendo and the Sony Erricson’s failure. Not to mention, since everything is so expensive, people are going to other companies for other needs like Sharp or Samsung. And due to that, they might have to get rid of one line if the PlayStation 4 fails, which would be their gaming section, which would get a lot of money off of their load. If Microsoft decides to focus more on Windows 8 and its successors, tablets, Windows Phone stuff, and a lot more, by leaving the console department, that’s highly unlikely. Nintendo leaving, that won’t happen unless they have several failures in a row, like Sega.
The new Xbox is called” Xbox One” The name sucks but at least it’s hard to come up with good puns about it.

That’s about it, too. Did you see the conference? Lol. He kept showing how easy it was to operate the box as a remote to run the TV by walking over in front of it and flailing about. I don’t know about you, but most people game and watch TV sitting down. Is anyone seriously going to stand up every time they want the machine to read them changing the input or the channel or whatever. It all looked really lame to me.
I would actually like to see sony and Nintendo join forces to kick Microsoftnout of the market and then they will just make their own consoles again but they wont be enemies.
Nintendo has billions in the bank, so expect them to stay. Microsoft is extremely successful so they will survive. Sony….is in some shit right now. I think they will be the ones to go. Which sucks to be honest because they’re my favorite gaming console maker.

After all of the fail features on the One, I think it’s pretty clear that, barring a redesign, it’s going to be Microsoft leaving the console field.
I wonder if they’ll sell off their first-party properties to Sony….
Sad thing is Nintendo has both companys by the balls. Here is a leason to learn, Nintindo runs all its consoles on a 5 year cycle, sony and xbox are wanting to run theirs on a 10 year cycle. Nintendo has 1 year on both companys leaving 4 years left and sony and microsoft are getting in the door late with these powerful systems that they want to have stick around for 10 years. so just as homes are getting all these new systems from xbox and PS 3 years from now and it becomes just the normal household industry Nintendo is going to poke its head out and announce a newer console with better specs and abilitys that Sony and xbox cant commit to because they put all thier money on the new consol.
I wouldn’t be supprised if Nintendo pulls out all its stops on its next consol in 4 years and goes balls to the walls. allowing you to use all Wii, Wii U, and its new consols prehiphrials and gives you blazing power unmatchable by xbox or Sony just announced systems.
