Aonuma Says “If We Don’t Change We Might Die”

zelda_wind_waker_hd_strike

Revered Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma recently sat down with Engadget to discuss the iconic Legend of Zelda franchise. Aonuma explained to the publication that if they continue to create remakes then the team ultimately won’t grow, but development on The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD has helped his production team learn what the system is capable of. He reiterated that the development team are also hard at work on the next Legend of Zelda game for Wii U, but it’s not at the point where the team have anything that’s relevant to show. Interestingly, Aonuma told the publication that “If we don’t change we might die. We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow.”

    1. just wondering, how are you always first? is it your only talent? your fuel for life? still have to admit it is pretty impressive!

      1. probably doesnt work/go to school.
a low life, but hey, as long as he gets sickr some traffic is all good. right?

        1. Bro you’re supposed to say why u mad? If you don’t do it right I can’t have you pretend to be me anymore and ruin my image

            1. Ok so you see I am the real why u mad? And the why u mad I replied to is my apprentice who takes my place when I am not around. As u can see though he still has stuff to learn

              1. If you don’t want a wannabe why not just get a profile pic? have it be like a troll face or a (1st) icon.

    1. Aonuma said in this very interview that he’s tired of remakes, OC3D and WWHD are both tests for the Wii U for his team

    1. the world will end. anyways, we cant judge 3d world yet! how many levels have you played? whats the story? have you experienced the entire game?

  1. Aonuma has the right idea, but change isn’t always something good. I just hope this doesn’t affect the new Zelda game in a bad way.

    1. change is great, specially from nintendo.
without change, we wouldnt have Super Mario 64, Ocarina Of Time, Metroid Prime, Mario Galaxy, SSB, or any of their IP’s. Nintendo revolutionized gaming back in the 90’s, but lately, it seems all we get it rehashes/remakes. Its not a bad thing, but sooner or later, these games are going to get boring. So change is good with me.

          1. well resident evil 1 was remade, and arguably it aged so badly that it could be considered awful, but the remake was awsome

  2. “…We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to ‘GROW’.”

That’s it guys, Zelda U will be a mature game… MY BODY IS READY!!!! \m/

  3. I think Wind Waker HD was a good idea due to them needed to catch up to HD, and just because so very few people played the game.

But i wouldn’t mind future HD games.

      1. compared to people who played games like ssbb which was selling 2 copies per second and people who play halo, wind waker seems like a cult classic

    1. Mario is ok the way it is, how else you imagine mario?
      On a racing game? done
      On a sport game? done
      On a fighting game? done

Mario is pretty simple: it must remain the same, or else it wont be mario anymore

      1. I imagine it changing and taking chances like with Zelda. Mario used to do that. We are talking in the context oh this article, remember? There was a wider variety between the Mario games before this.

  4. Interesting that Aonuma is wanting to improve things. However improvements aren’t always needed. It’s what people want that counts. They could do lots of remakes that have done well and people would still buy them.

I am glad Aonuma and co are doing the Wind Waker in HD as it was a game on the GameCube I remember rather well so I would buy it without question.
I really hope he knows what he is doing as a small change could affect something and kill something that was good about Nintendo.

Although they are a company that bought the gaming industry up and they’ve not failed since 1981.

If something would go wrong I know Iwata or Miyamoto would know what to do.
    They’re all very clever chaps.

  5. Whatever happened to the thought of having your cake and ice cream at the same time.
Yes, continue to make new Zelda games with new ideas that expand and evolve the series but don’t shut the door on remakes or sequels because there will always be a hunger to revisit the old things with new technological updates or revisions.
I love seeing a sequel to A Link to The Past.
I want to see a remake of Majora’s Mask for Wii-U…
And I am excited to see whats in store for the Legend of Zelda Wii-U.

There is no one category that truly fits.

  6. New IPs, old IPs, another type of Mario games cause i know they won’t stop the mario game avalanche that keeps on coming, I know for a fact Aonuma said the new Zelda will contain different elements that previous zelda games didn’t have, which is totally great.

    1. no way there getting Capcom or square enix anytime soon. Sega maybe but even that’s doubtful techmo I think has the largest chance of getting bought out, but that would cost a ton

    1. Hmmmm Majoras Mask is definately darker, What about a sequel? Hmmmmm you can play as Fierce Deity Link the whole way through and it could be a hack n slash ala Bayonetta. Link has a giant sword whip and can choke enemies to decapitate them. The instrument he carries is an Axe that is half electric guitar half weapon. He uses riffs to travel quickly between areas and instead of rising a horse he rides a Ducati in a large open world environment. Haha my imagination just ran wild

  7. This is the best news, that has come out one of the most shit E3’s ever.

Zelda reached it’s peak at ocarina of time, it has been going down hill ever since.

They need to change the formular, god if they release a crap zelda HD, then zelda as a series is finished.

    1. wait, majoras mask skyward sword twilight princess were down hill? oot is my favorite Zelda and that’s coming from a non Zelda fan, but I would say those games are either a tiny bit worse on par or even better than oot

      1. The formular was at it’s best when oot hit the shelfs. From then on, the formular has become stale, and this was most evident in skyward sword.

Nintendo needs a new formular, fresh, exciting, far from all the other zeldas. One things for sure, Zelda needs to be different.

    2. Metroid Othet M didn’t kill the Metroid series. Do you honestly think that the Zelda series is so weak that one bad game will end it’s legacy?

      1. The thing with metroid other m is, that they tryed new formular elements. although these things ended up, not making it almighty. It did raise most peoples interest to an acceptable level. but I’m glad they decided not to push this formular further.

With zelda it’s different, they can’t change formular elements as easily, and the current formular is close to poisonous. The biggest threat is if this becomes a killer. it needs to be refreshed by just doing a completely new formular.

Yes, this game could end the series if it’s toxic.

  8. “If we don’t change we might die. We need to evolve. Things need to change. Things need to grow.”

This could be good or bad. If they change and evolve the wrong way, they could destroy everything that we all love about Nintendo (or more specifically, what I myself love). And the way that most games have been going lately (digital this and online that), I wouldn’t doubt it eventually going the WRONG way.

  9. Personally if they are going to make remakes, just don’t do OoT since that game has been re-released several times already with 1 solid remake…

MM needs one but after the new Zelda has been released…

  10. Well this is interesting.
I think, Aonuma is right about saying the team needs to now first how to work with WiiU hardware, that could be reflected in the next Zelda WiiU.
At the same time, he’s recognizing they need to change the way are doing videogames/sequels/remakes, etc. I think he knows people want more mature games, or maybe more games that don’t have blood, but with strong stories, drama, etc, the same way Zelda did from the past to this present.
Hope we’ll see new Ip’s in the future, i would love nintendo bring back old games too, but new Ip’s would awesome.
