Earlier this week we reported that a small amount of copies of Pokemon X & Y were sold by a handful of shops in Canada and apparently Italy. Instagram user kosthedin had received a copy of the game and had been sharing images of it on his account. The game had been sold to kosthedin by a friend who worked at the store, However, Nintendo figured out where the copy of the game leaked from so they flew someone out to the store to reclaim the game. Kosthedin found out about this and decided to hand the game back so his friend could keep his job.
They need to learn how to let it go. “Surprise” is not what makes people coming back for their games

Surprise makes me come back for Nintendo’s games. I got some bits spoiled for me that I absolutely DID NOT want to see until I saw it in 3D with my own two eyes. Honestly, if anyone made him return it, it was probably the store shitting itself over the fact that the friend leaked the game and made a Nintendo rep come to them.
I heard (second hand on other website), that the guy returned it cause Nintendo put pressure on the store and he didn’t want to see his friend get fired.

shipments usually go out a week or so before release, from my understanding.
Yeah, they usually hit distribution centers a week or week and half in advance stores often get them like 3 days early at the most with big releases or at least they did back in the day. Oct 11th is still a bit away, so someone hit the button a bit early I think.
But this is Pokemon! You can’t simple distribute in a week a Pokemon game XD.

People are just exaggerating this the most that could happen is that Nintendo just called the store and it was enough to make them poop in fear.
Working in a gamestore when I was much younger, if something went horribly wrong the upper management would come down and pretty much threaten or fire anyone that was involved.
Since it was a very small store, Nintendo could threaten to stop shipment if they broke street date again. I remember Midway did that around the time of the second Mortal Kombat.

Just about all retail games have street dates, NDA’s, and all this other legal stuff that goes along with them. It’s not always about spoiling a game or hiding surprises and secrets.

Dude is just exaggerating the most Nintendo could do was asking him to stop posting pictures and the head of the guy who sold it to him but cuz he was a good friend he returned the game so his friend could keep the job. The game was obtained legaly and after that he could do what ever he pleased except pirated.
The game was sold illegally. The store receive the game early to stock up supply before delivering it to the sales floor, but any customer that receive the game early from the date stated, it is illegal.
By legally I mean the monetary transaction not by the break of street date. The most Nintendo could do was to go againts the store not the buyer.

I have seen manufacturer (in my industry) terminal dealers as resellers for leaking info. Actually have been blind copied on emails to those dealers for agreement violations. The employee here screwed up big. His company might let him go just for making them so bad.

Back in the N64 day’s the funcoland [aka] gamestop I go to had a full demo copy of the first Banjo Kazooie game and one of the new sales clerk’s was dumb enough to sell me 2 week’s before it came out.He though it was just a used copy of the game and I even paid the used price.But if he would have even looked at it at all it said property of nintendo and not for sale 3 different places on it.I was even burnt in to the plastic.The head manager new it was me who got it because I traded some games in to get it and called demanding I return it.I said I would but didn’t. First off, guys, it’s not just the Big ‘N’ who take this seriously. Years ago when I worked at GameCrazy, when Rockstar was planning on release the latest GTA. We had a clerk named Kris who thought he’d be cool if he sold some early copies to his friends before release date.
His excuse was the game did not officially have a ‘street date,’ and he was allegedly told the copies could be immediately be sold upon receiving them (more like ‘My Momma owns the property of this store and I can do whatever the hell I want.). And even snubbed us when we warned him not to do that.
As a result, not only did Rockstar find out, but fined our company some MAJOR penalty fees, and pulled the remaining copies from the store. Naturally, Kris thought this was funny until our manager had him suspended for three weeks, under orders by our DM. And not even his precious uncle could help him out of this one.
In fact, we couldn’t sell any Rockstar related games for six months because of what he did, so yeah, some companies OTHER than Nintendo do take this rather seriously.

Nintendo has been pumping quite some resources into making sure this game will release world-wide at the same day. The are trying their best to give everyone that feeling of exploration, without everything already written out on the web. I kinda understand their quick response.
