Sony Says Mobiles Have Hurt 3DS & Vita “Quite Badly”, But 3DS Is Doing Much Better Than Vita

nintendo_3ds_light_blue

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has confessed that mobile gaming on smartphones and tablets have hurt the PlayStation Vita and the Nintendo 3DS quite badly. However, Yoshida admitted that the Nintendo 3DS is fairing much than Sony’s latest handheld gaming device, the PlayStation Vita. Here’s what he had to say on the matter.

“I was asked during the Tokyo Game Show how badly this [mobile] hurts portable gaming consoles, and my answer was – quite. Quite badly. There’s no question,”

“In terms of the installed base, compare it to 3DS – the 3DS is doing much better.”

    1. In terms of sales, games and quality, the 3DS is better. The Vita only beats the 3DS in power, and to be honest, there are no Vita games that has caught my attention.

        1. Svenson that’s completely wrong. it just goes to show how little you know about the gaming industry.

It is all down to the creativity of the developers. Clearly there is a lack of this.

          1. No creativity? You’ve obviously never played Mutant blobs from space. That game reminded me of Nintendo with how creative it’s level design was. Or Dokuro. Or Guacamelee. Or Gravity Rush. Or Dragon’s Crown. Vita has a lot of great games. They’re just not big AAA titles, so nobody takes notice of them.

              1. Dokuro and Gravity Rush are Vita only.

There are other great Vita only games though:

                Killzone Mercenary
                LBP PS Vita
                Unit 13
                Uncharted Golden Abyss
                New Little King’s Story
                DJMAX Technika Tune
                WipEout 2048
                Escape Plan
Assassin’s Creed III Liberation (for now)
                Ragnarok Odyssey
                Silent Hill Book of Memories
                Soul Sacrifice
                Velocity Ultra

Then there are other exclusives coming:

                Murasaki Baby
                Freedom Wars
                Demon Gaze
                Tearaway
                Valhalla Knights 3
                Ys Memories of Celceta

And of course there are many more. This is just off of the top of my head. Add that to the other exclusives and multiplatform games, the Vita is very, very well supported. People just don’t know about the games that are on it due to poor marketing and limited retail presence, and it doesn’t have the exclusive “big name” system selling franchises just yet.

                  1. Opinions are irrelevant when discussing factual matters. There are many games that can *only* be found on Vita, whether *you* like the games or not.

There are people who think the same about 3DS games. Those opinions are irrelevant when speaking of games that can only be found on the 3DS.

That said, your opinion (even if it’s baseless, considering you have probably never played any of those games) is noted. ;)

        2. Hmm… has vita got Kid Icarus? Nope. Has ot got Zelda ALBW? Nope. Has it got Smash Bros.? Nope. Has it got Kirby? Nope. Has it got Yoshi? Nope. Has it got Luigi’s Mansion? Nope. Has it even got Mario? Nope.

My interest in vita = 0

        3. if im a casual then i guess fable, dead space, assassins creed, halo, infamous, heavy rain, and the last of us are casual games too because i play and love those games as well

      1. I think you have to try gravity rush, it is one of the best games I have ever played but sold my vita after because there are no other games for it.

        1. I haven’t really checked out the Vitas libary, so I guess there could be some good games on it. If I ever get one, however, I’ll make sure to check it out.

The PS4 has the same problem to me; only game that looks interresting to me is Knack. I love Action-Adventure games, but that one game isn’t enough for a day one buy. Will buy it next year sometimes, though.

            1. I belive you. But at the moment, I don’t have TIME to play all the games released anymore. Another reason for me to buy PS4 is so I have something to play on if the 3DS and Wii U get another dead time, where no games that intrrests me are released.

That will propably not happen, though, as I have been very slow completing games for the last months…

          1. @fjdshkfd

Hey imbecile, your opinions will continue to remain baseless and irrelevant until you decide to include facts in your statements.

    2. Even the director can say facts about nintendo and sony, without taking subjective bullshit in the topic, but why can’t the fans? I’m sorry, I mean the fanboys ^^

        1. It sold 30K actually. It’s shit, but that’s first week, besides, Japan sales only. Japan never bought Zelda that much. Wait until it arrives in NA.

The 5K sales are Wiiu hardware.

            1. The only HD remakes is Wind Waker and Resident Evil, before that there was a 3D remake of Ocarina of Time.

Apart from that there was only VC releases, much like the PS classics on the PS3.

              1. NSMBU is Hd ,Skyward sword Hd,Metroid Other M Hd,X Hd,Wario ware Hd,Wii u Party Hd,Sonic and Mario winter sports Hd,Sonic Lost world Hd,Mario kart 8 Hd,Smash bros u Hd Damage control all day long.

                1. SNMBU It’s HD but not a Remake, Skyward Sword isn’t HD nor a remake, Metroid other M isn’t HD nor a remake, Wario Ware, it’s not a remake, Wii Party U isn’t a remake, Sonic and Mario Winter sports isn’t a remake, Sonic Lost World isn’t a remake, Mario Kart 8 isn’t a remake, Smash Bros U isn’t a remake.

Learn the difference between REMAKE and Franchise continuation.

You obviously don’t know what HD is if you think Skyward Sword and Other M are HD.

                  1. they try to Milk the games in Hd because they got no new stuff going.3rd party dont like to bring games on wii u because the games dont work on wii u and the causal gamers dont like shooter or good raceing games.

                    1. Funny but the gamers on Nintendo systems are actually more dedicated to gaming than on the other “consoles” which are actually multimedia devices,

Shooters and racers are the most casual games you can find.

Developers have said, that it’s not the Wii Us fault if others can’t make a game look good on it, it’s their own fault for not learning how to utilize the system.

                    2. Bullshit, all of it.
                      1. They remake old games to give people a chance to play great classics that they wouldn’t have had a chance to play earlier. Besides, the only games they remade is Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker, compared to a ton of re-releases on competing consoles, which often only included upscaled resolution.
                      2. ‘Some’ 3rd party developers won’t bring their games to the Wii U because the install base is still fairly small, and it would be a financial risk.
                      3. Even more bullshit. Casuals are the reason why Call of Duty sells millions of copies yearly.

                2. You´re wrong man, definetely wrong, they´´re not re-releases, they are new games. There were just three HD re-releases on WiiU: Resident Evil Revelations, Monster Hunter 3 and Wind Waker

                  1. skyward sword? metroid other m? X? what? rofl
none of those are remakes of anything

                    you’re so full of shit
                    as usual

        1. Wow, you really dont know youre history, WW was the worst selling zelda game, so this whole everyone has already played it excuse doesnt work.

Nintendo shouldved remade a different Zelda game.

          1. it’s *your*
and furthermore i’m not sure why you’re saying that i’m not japanese

and last but not least: i was of course talking about those interested in the game in the first place

it was not overly successful back then, why are people expecting it to outsell its predecessor now

          Suck on it.

            1. It’s a handheld console, in Japan. IT’S SUPPOSED TO SELL MORE THAN HOME CONSOLES. It’s just suprising that Vita is barely selling more than Wii U, it should sell better.

                      1. So it’s not selling, that would mean it’ selling 0 systems each day of the week.

Now if you had said it’s not selling WELL then you’d be correct.

            1. @Siolore

Don’t worry this guy is really just grasping at straws to find something about the Wii U and the 3DS …. even if it doesn’t make no sense -.- . Sad really that he cant even read well the info. that HE chose to put up lol .

          1. [Wii U] The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Nintendo, 09/26/13) 30,264 (New)

            Wii U 5,909 (5,824)

I believe you have these two mixed up svenson. Are you new to english?

        2. No, no, no.. these number are retail (physical copies) sales. Media Create doesn´t track digital sales

            1. You said WIND WAKER sold 5k. You are so backwards. And you also said PSP sold more than Wii U. Again, you are backwards. WHAT’S YOUR DEAL MAN?

    1. Sony have themselves to blame. They need system selling titles like Gran turismo , GTA or Metal gear etc on the system. The psp had them, no reason why Vita shouldn’t.

                1. Yeah. It’s not like Bayonetta, X, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Yarn Yoshi or Donkey Kong are coming next year or something like that.

        1. Gosh you’re like the Parrot that nobody wants -.- . If you’re not a Nintendo fan than why are you on this site ? You’re not doing the PSP fans any good by being a troll :/ . You’re just being immature and acting you’re shoe size instead of your age . You don’t see us Nintendo fans trolling PSP sites :/ ? You’re being an example -.-.

            1. So its not what I said that was immature but how I typed ? Okay thats all that matters to me anyway . I’m sorry for typing like the average 14 yr old in your eyes but this is just who I am :/ . Not every teenager is the same or boring . I just like to be happy or peppy sorry :) . Also sorry for the grammar ,I guess, I just saw that mistake and I had to laugh at that myself lol :D . Well I would change it if I could but I can’t since its in the past . Also you’re wrong about my age I’m older than that .

      1. The PSP got most of those titles near the end of its lifecycle and the only one there that Sony can do anything about is Gran Turismo. The rest are up to third party devs.

It does need some big name franchises with unique and exclusive games, but it doesn’t look like too many third parties are interested in working with the system anymore. We’ll see how things turn out in a few years, maybe.

        1. Those things did cross my mind…. but PS Vita JUST needs titles like the ones I mentioned and it will fly off the shelves!

            1. True. Ah well, it’s still a great console an will at least achieve life time sales comparable to that of the Gamecube. Which is hands down, my favourite system ever.

If Sony can sell more than 20 Million Vita’s then there will probably be a successor.

    2. 3DS is doing better because it is *different* from a home console. If you already own a PS3 then who really cares about owning a smaller version?

          1. I can get a gaming PC easily, I just don’t want to because I love Sony exclusives and I’m a trophy hunter on PS3, so I wanna continue that on PS4 and Vita.

        1. If I bought a PS4, i ‘d be like you buying it with the knowledge of knowing it will be the most powerful system and best graphics but the games are nothing interesting that I need to play. So I’d own the most powerful console but the weakest console would be more active on my TV stand.

    3. So tell me. Why do you naysayers/fanboys be so emotional about video games, the systems and etc? Why do you try to force your opinion on others here who don’t share it?

    4. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Sony damage controlling, mobile phones are not the reason the Vita has bombed, 3DS is doing fantastically well despite phone gaming.

Sony do not understand the handheld market.

      1. Sony never said it’s *the* reason the Vita isn’t doing well. Obviously there are other factors (which Yoshida even talks about in the same interview if you take the time to read things). However, there are clearly visible impacts that are being made to the handheld market by mobile devices, whether they be phones or tablets.

The same can be said for 3DS. Even though it is doing quite well, there is still an impact. The advantage that Nintendo has over Sony though, are the iconic franchises that can only be found on the 3DS. Sony doesn’t own any true system selling IP’s like Nintendo.

If you say the mobile market is doing nothing to the handheld market, then you know nothing about the industry.

      2. Mobile devices are essentially the jackknife of entertainment — you can do virtually anything on them. It’s the one main advantage mobile devices have over the dedicated handhelds — versatility.

    5. i reckon smartphones and tablets have hurt Wii U sales even more, as a dedicated console is these days even more perceived as a luxury…the 3DS though is doing just fine

      1. Peanut Butter Kit Kat

Home Consoles are dying out in Japan but still big business in the west.

Wii U’s problem has been no games, limited 3rd party support and no brand awareness. The only notable games until recently have been NSMBU, MH3U and COD.
One Nintendo game, one HD remake and a multiplat. Despite that, the WiiU has still managed to sell 4M units.

Xmas will be an interesting time for the Wii U..

    6. That’s an understatement. I LOVE Persona 4 Golden, but everything else is just decent or meh.

Come on, Sony, get it together. It’s not like you’re spending it on any PS4 games, the only one that looks great is Infamous and Guilty Gear, and you’re not even making Guilty Gear

      1. Sony is investing quite a bit of money and resources into PS3, Vita, and PS4 games development. The problem with the Vita is that the third parties are not interested in putting the system selling popular franchises on it right now – and unfortunately, Sony can’t force them to. Sony doesn’t have those IP’s that will really move systems the way Nintendo does.

    7. i once played this game on psp with some blob that you rolled around using the gyroscope in the handheld, and you press a button to make it jump- it was so cute and fun! i do not own a psp but that is because i have only found a couple games to be interesting, and i guess it wasnt appealing enough to get another part time job to buy one (thats how i bought my 3DS XL, got it launch day!) but i might buy one from a nearby pawnshop, they have lots of psp;s there

    8. This is why I dislike and disrespect people who even THINK of playing games on mobile devices. They’re killing the “true” games for everyone. I don’t know why games even exist on mobile devices in the first place. Does anybody use phones for calling people anymore? And I have no clue what other “mobile devices” are out there. I swear, this generation of people is so ignorant and casual. Old school gamers like myself are the only ones who really know what true games are all about.

    9. Of course 3DS is crushing the dying Vita. Nintendo players are the only one to remember that console gaming is designed to be fun and that handhelds are awesome for that when Sony players ain’t got time for that and don’t mind to play over-generic craps as long as the graphics are top notch mah dawg.

    10. ps4 and xbox one will both sell poorly just like wii-u because the economy is crap people would rather pay 99 cents for a game instead of $60. most of the sales for next gen will come from reseller looking to rape your wallet the first chance the get. lets not forget that microsoft and sony are dirtbag companies that will take no action or blame on faulty hardware so dont expect a recall if anything happens. remember the yellow light of death and the red ring of death’ oohh and psvita blue light of death all issues of overheating. now that there selling you a pc gaming rig as a next gen console you think the issue wont be more severe if they couldnt get it right with last gen how do you think next gen will be. i see alot of burn out systems.i dont see them putting watercooling, radiator or silver thermal paste,

    11. sad but true. hopefully this doesn’t deter them from making another handheld next gen. true handheld experience must never be beaten by shit cellphone games.

    12. Well when you think about what the gaming market is lately you’ll notice that its not that the 3DS has bad games or that the vita is a shitty handheld, but a iPad and other tablets have more things to offer. Games, books, youtube etc. Nintendo and Sony need to bring up their game if they want to keep the handheld market going

      1. Sony offers all those things on Vita, and yet the console is barely selling, so not offering that is not what is hurting its sales.
Also, how exactly is surpassing Wii’s numbers in three years selling poorly? 3DS is doing marvelously, this bullshit statement only diminishes that to make Vita sound like it is in less of a bind.
Don’t delude yourself, smartphones and tablets are a fad, gamers are not going to give up consoles to play Fruit Ninja.

        1. It’s not about hardcore/avid gamers, who are in fact a minority of the market share. It’s about industry and market trends. The facts are there. The industry is changing, and fast. Mobile devices are having a negative impact on dedicated gaming handhelds.

While this is not the only determining (nor the dominant) factor on how a dedicated gaming handheld performs, it is influential.

    13. LOL! Nice try Sony. iPads aren’t the reason your device is failing. YOU ARE. You tried advertising that thing as console experience on the go instead of a unique handheld and it’s come back to bite you in the rear. Just discontinue you it already. You’ve talked time and time again about how its fortunes were gonna change but you never brought in the goods. Face it. Your gaming division has been mangled so bad you can’t even afford to support two systems at once so now your marketing it as PS4 controller (and it won’t work) and really on indies. Pitiful.

As for the 3DS? Stop comparing it to unrelated entities. Just cause iPads are the in thing doesn’t mean they’re directly dominating. As indie devs have shown us time and time again, (Mutant Mudds, Gunman Clive, etc) those platforms may have enormous install bases but small audiences. Fact is, no more 5% of users of iOS/Android devices use them as serious gaming systems. Most people will just download something ultra popular and overrated like Angry Birds or Temple Run. And even then, the average player will probably touch the game once or twice and never pick it up again. Nintendo is NOT leaving the handheld market anytime soon. 3DS shows they’ll be in for a LONG while. They OWN it.

And one more thing to say: Pokemon and $130 2DS. Nuff said.

    14. No “Nintendo is only selling more because they’re focusing on casuals and gimmicks” ramble?
Something doesn’t sound right, are you sure that was Sony?
Hmm, maybe they just can’t swordfight the fart.

    15. So, the DS is the highest selling video game console ever. Just surpassing the PS2 in lifetime sales. However, the 3DS is outpacing DS sales by a wide margin and is about to explode with sales thanks to Pokemon X/Y. How have cellphones and tablets hurt the 3DS sales so bad, if it is looking to be the best selling gaming device ever? Ya, even if it surpasses the DS, it is only a fraction of iPhone sales, but who compares sales of phones to video game consoles? Nobody buys a tablet or phone to play angry birds. They buy those devices for other reasons and then get games as an after thought. Those people wouldn’t ever buy a handheld console anyway. Any true gamer who buys an iPad to game, instead of a Vita or 3DS, is a fool.

    16. It is true mobile gaming is hurting portable consoles, so Nintendo must respond with a better portable device and better games.

    17. Pingback: Sony dice que los móviles han herido al 3DS y al Vita | ResetMX

    18. i never see anyone with a vita or 3ds when i am outside. so i guess traditional handhelds are dead in the water. the only ones still using them are kids. hence so much crap for the two traditional handhelds. now that was mean, there is of course an equal amount of crap in the new mobile section to be found. the winning point of new mobile gadgets is convienience. a handy or tablet is much more convenient to carry around than a games-only-and-maybe-a-little-bit-of-movies-but-not-too-much-gadget. that’s the main reason the traditional handhelds lost. not the quality of games or content. just the convenience factor and the cloudbased infrastructure. and convenience is very important for the vast majority of human beings.
